So today I nearly went through a police road closed sign 😬

Came round the corner driving through town to a police sign. I seen the police sign but didn’t clock the ‘road closed’ part.. eek!

It wasn’t an accident. The road was only partially blocked off on one side. I think they were attending an incident in a house. As there was a few policeman outside a house.

At the moment I presumed we were over taking as didn’t look like anything major was going on. The road wasn’t fully coned off or anything, the other side of the road was clear . No cones or anything , just a small sign on the road, a police car and a policeman lingering around.

I went to proceed over take (slowly) sand a policeman came over shouted and told me to stop so I stopped. He came over and asked me to turn around. I apologised for my mistake. I honestly assumed that we could overtake as only party of the road was blocked off. There was no signs, cones or police up the far end of the road where I was approaching. If the whole road was coned it would have been obvious. I thought it was just one side.

I apologised and turned around and went the other way. I wasn’t fully comfortable with turning around near the bend I just come from with children in the car. There was no prior warnings down the road for a police incident - needed them further back!

This is a bit of a babble but I’m in really anxious that I’ve done something terrible now. That he may of taken my reg and will send me a fine. I’ve never had one in my 10 years of driving. I wasn’t driving fast or aggressively. I apologised for my mistake and turned around to go back.

Please tell me I’m just being daft and the policeman probably didn’t give a crap at my honest mistake.

I should think you’ll be fine, they’ll shake their heads & mutter a bit. From what you describe, I think I might well have made the same choice.

Absolutely shat myself a few weeks ago when I went onto a slip road and as I went past the signs suddenly thought I’d misread them and that the slip road was closed (it wasn’t). Wakes you up doesn’t it? Grin

You're over reacting. And you've learnt a lovely life lesson - if the sign says 'road closed' assume the entire road is closed. We often don't know how to react to these things until we learn as unexpected signs can cause a little internal panic, especially if you're like me and only know one way to get to any place 😆

You won't get a fine, as you didn't actually drive through it and if there was a fine to be had he'd have given you one there and then.
I'd let it be water under the bridge and move on in your day 😊

I was in an Irish numberplated hire car driving through NI during the troubles. Took a wrong turn near a checkpoint down a dirt track. Cue half a dozen armed squaddies chasing after me. Blush Would NOT recommend.

Stop worrying, it's really not a big deal.

If it makes you feel better, a couple of days ago I drove through the cones blocking off a closed road and got shouted at by the workmen who had shut it off. I shouted back that I had frozen food in the boot and needed to get home, they shouted at me again, I put my window up and carried on.

And yes, I know I was unreasonable, but I didn't know what else to do!

You're massively over thinking it. He probably saw you coming and though 'ffs not another one' Its quite common for some reason. The minute he sent you on your way hell have forgotten about it

You stopped and talked to them. If they had wanted to fine you they would have done so there and then. Police are human too, they aren't out to get you. If they were attending a house they might not even have been traffic police so more interested in keeping the public away from the house than filling in paperwork.

Thanks all. I am a panicker. It was a moment of panic. Not sure which way to go. It wasn’t what I would expect for a road closed. There were no police cars blocking the road - they were parked up along the road normally, no cones. There was one small sign at the left hand side of the road and a policeman taking barely any notice until I tried to overtake. I’m hoping he accepted my apology and got on with his day 🤣 They were gone 15 minutes later (only popped to the chemist).

And yes, I know I was unreasonable, but I didn't know what else to do!

Stop, and go a different way? Rather than endangering people in a worksite

I've done this before only I went through the closed road...oops. I spent the day worrying about it as I realised after what I'd done (in my defence I had just followed the white van on front). The police never knocked at my door. Dont worry.

Last year, I accidentally drove the wrong way down a one-way street. It was somewhere where I had never driven before. I was so embarrassed!! Luckily, it was a pretty quiet residential street, but I did get some odd looks from the other drivers I met. I turned off as soon as I realised. I'm usually such a cautious driver. I don't know how I missed the sign.

He won't fine you or even taken down your reg. You apologised and complied with what he asked you to do. Chances are he's already forgotten you've done it. You probably were not the first or last!

If he was going to fine you he would have said something about it then. The stuff that comes unannounced in the post is almost entirely from cameras.

My husband once found the road he'd parked in while at work had been cordoned off due to an incident when he came out. He had no choice but to leave the car where it was and get the train home.

Good job you weren't driving into a gas leak, a firearms incident or a hostage situation then.

Good job you weren't driving into a gas leak, a firearms incident or a hostage situation then.

Some people are so important that they don't care about anybody else. At least they think they are so important when in reality they are less important than a speck of dirt on the bottom of my shoe when they are behaving in such a stupid way.
