So today I nearly went through a police road closed sign 😬

Came round the corner driving through town to a police sign. I seen the police sign but didn’t clock the ‘road closed’ part.. eek!

It wasn’t an accident. The road was only partially blocked off on one side. I think they were attending an incident in a house. As there was a few policeman outside a house.

At the moment I presumed we were over taking as didn’t look like anything major was going on. The road wasn’t fully coned off or anything, the other side of the road was clear . No cones or anything , just a small sign on the road, a police car and a policeman lingering around.

I went to proceed over take (slowly) sand a policeman came over shouted and told me to stop so I stopped. He came over and asked me to turn around. I apologised for my mistake. I honestly assumed that we could overtake as only party of the road was blocked off. There was no signs, cones or police up the far end of the road where I was approaching. If the whole road was coned it would have been obvious. I thought it was just one side.

I apologised and turned around and went the other way. I wasn’t fully comfortable with turning around near the bend I just come from with children in the car. There was no prior warnings down the road for a police incident - needed them further back!

This is a bit of a babble but I’m in really anxious that I’ve done something terrible now. That he may of taken my reg and will send me a fine. I’ve never had one in my 10 years of driving. I wasn’t driving fast or aggressively. I apologised for my mistake and turned around to go back.

Please tell me I’m just being daft and the policeman probably didn’t give a crap at my honest mistake.

For all the police knew, OP, you'd pulled out from a parking space after the road closed sign and therefore couldn't possibly have known the road was closed...

I've never heard of anyone being fined for driving past a 'road closed' sign and having to turn round. The police are normally too busy dealing with whatever event has closed the road to worry about taking down the registrations of anyone who happens to end up nose to nose with them, especially when they can just tell them to turn round and go the other way! It wouldn't be worth the admin!

I did an illegal right turn in my home city in my Father’s car when I was up visiting as the car right in front of a police car at traffic lights.

They were very nice about it and pointed out that the road layout changed about 6months previously and that there were signs but that lots of locals had been a bit slow to adapt.

I was mortified.

I once drove down a one-way street after getting lost in a town near us - in my defence I'd just had DS2 and was massively sleep-deprived to the point of madness and simply missed the sign (I've never even run a red light in 20 years of driving let alone getting pulled over or fined). The police were coming (the right way) down the same street and kindly pointed out to me that I was driving like a bit of a dick. I actually said to the officer who got out of his car "I saw a couple of people waving at me and just thought it was a really friendly town". Fortunately he laughed and let me go with a bit of a bollocking - I think he saw newborn DS2 and realised he'd make me cry if he fined me.

Suspect it would have been a different outcome had there been some kind of emergency, though, and I'm militant about street signs now.

Don't worry, OP, if you were in trouble they would have asked for your details at the time.

Frozen food lady OTOH... What if it was blocked off for a gas leak?

@Strugglingtodomybest

Stop worrying, it's really not a big deal.

If it makes you feel better, a couple of days ago I drove through the cones blocking off a closed road and got shouted at by the workmen who had shut it off. I shouted back that I had frozen food in the boot and needed to get home, they shouted at me again, I put my window up and carried on.

And yes, I know I was unreasonable, but I didn't know what else to do!

You sound like the crazy delivery driver who was driving at speed the wrong way down a narrow one way road that children had to cross from school to the green. He also used the what am I supposed to do line. Go around, it's not only unreasonable it's dangerous.

My dad once accidentally walked into a closed scene of a fatal car crash. The police had blocked off all the roads, but didn't notice the footpath to the local sports centre.

letsgomaths · 14/06/2020 15:08

It happened to me once when I was a driving instructor, some years ago. Blush On my lesson, we somehow drove into a closed off area, perhaps through an obscure side road, near a big sports venue (not football), just as the crowds were coming out. We had to drive along at the same speed at which the crowd was walking! Some of them were jovially tapping on the car.

Flyinggeese · 14/06/2020 15:12

Strugglingtodomybest are you kidding?!

LillianBland · 14/06/2020 15:36

@titchy

I was in an Irish numberplated hire car driving through NI during the troubles. Took a wrong turn near a checkpoint down a dirt track. Cue half a dozen armed squaddies chasing after me. Blush Would NOT recommend.
Oh, I’m sorry, but that did make me laugh. On a more serious point, it’s a good job you stopped or there would have been a very good chance of you not being here to tell the tale.
helpfulperson · 14/06/2020 15:54

Don't worry about it at all. As others have said if he thought anything of it it would have been 'oh no, not another one'.

As it wasn't particularly well signed chances are that whatever it was had only just happened and they just needed to get traffic out of the way quickly so stuck up the signs that all police cars carry which is not alot. If it's going to be closed for more that a few minutes then others will turn up and put up proper signage and prewarning. I got involved in a truly bizzare situation around an accident on a roundabout where they just needed the traffic out of the way so put a policeman at the entrance to the roundabout to turn everyone. But you couldn't see where the accident was so I though I could go round an alternative route that brought you out at the other side of the roundabout. I must have looked like I knew where I was going because lots of people followed me and it turned out that junction was shut as well so we got turned away there. But these things happen.

WaxOnFeckOff · 14/06/2020 16:00

Are you sure there was actually something happening? Are you in Scotland? They're closed off lots of roads around me and kept the car parks shut to stop people going more than 5 miles. Also stops folk who want to use the facilities that are within 5 miles but lets not worry about that... Hmm

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 14/06/2020 16:21

Don’t worry - we all have days like that ! I didn’t stop once when there was temporary traffic lights 🤦‍♀️ In fairness though they had just literally been set up, luckily there was nothing coming the other way , although there were lots of spaces between cones to pull in if needed . Felt like a right knob though !

Iwantacookie · 14/06/2020 17:49

Dont worry I drove the wrong way down a one way street once. Was trying to find a place had a white van so far up my arse I'm surprised he didnt hit me. I panicked for ages thinking I was going to get a letter etc. Nothing came of it.
