Thank you all for your honest answers. I do feel it is important that we all no matter what colour look at how we would feel if the the colour if the aggressors or the picnic ers are changed in whatever dynamic

And I agree we have all ( including myself) have been bought up fearing within the structure of race within this country. On thing holds firm. It is almost always men that are the aggressors

Thinking about it - if the group were black men and the Picnickers white I would feel concerned and also confused. It would be a weird and unusual scenario and I wouldn't automatically assume they planned to be violent whereas with a group of white men I would.
If the picnickers were black being approached by that mob I would have felt significantly more fearful for their safety. I think they would have launched into violence very quickly before they had a chance to get away.
