WTAF - Far right protests

Poppi89 · 12/06/2020 11:18

I have just heard on the radio that far-right protesters will be out tomorrow in response to the BLM protesters. People are being urged not to be out in support of BLM tomorrow due to the aggressive nature of the far-right group and BLM protests are being cancelled because of them.

I am outraged by this. The BLM protesters are asking for people to not be killed due to the colour of their skin. They have rightly or wrongly made a decision to put themselves at risk of COVID-19 to help spread this message - a lot of people have called them idiots etc for doing this.

The far-right protests are now also protesting in large groups (but not in response to a murder) and are 'known' for being aggressive. How is this acceptable?

I would like to hear from anyone who is planning to join/agree with these far-right protests and their reasons why?

Then there was a rather sad picture of a pale, male and stale pissing upside a statue. I'm assuming the one he was braying about being there to protect.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 13/06/2020 19:30

@pigeon999 then this would have also been an important section which again, you chose not to copy and paste

When you compare these figures to how much of the population these groups make up (as measured by the 2011 censuss*), black people are more than twice as likely to die in police custody.
The 2011 census - the most accurate source - showed that 3% of the English population were black (though this proportion may have grown since then). Black people accounted for 8% of deaths in custody.

wightwine · 13/06/2020 19:31

@OneForMeToo

It’s fabulous. Repeat Criminal killed by American cops. Riots and vandalism in the U.K... perfect sense aye. Break lockdown during a pandemic in the U.K. because a criminal died due to America’s police brutality.

Thugs on both sides of the protests/riots it’s not as simple as BLM protestors are all innocents while white people protesting vandalism are All racists only.

don't you mean ''arrogant white policeman casually murders a black man who was under arrest and in handcuffs in front of telephone camera fully expecting to get away with it''.

No, not one bit of it is fabulous. It must be nice to be able to toddle through life so dismissively of other people's travails.

Pepperwort · 13/06/2020 19:31

It's notable that the BLM protests included men and women. These out today were those sorts of white men - the kind we usually describe with the word thug, if the US still allows us to use that. If they were chanting England, their version of England is not mine. Never has been, never will be.

PinkyBrain · 13/06/2020 19:35

The thing is both sides have the right to protest / demonstrate. There was violence last week, there was violence today. If we’re going to allow one group to gather during a pandemic we can’t then stop another group just because we don’t necessarily agree with their beliefs.

pigeon999 · 13/06/2020 19:35

pepper you were saying that the footage was fake, old photos being circulated and not reflective of what was happening last weekend. I was watching live footage, and I am simply saying that we did see violence, lots of violence from BLM sadly. Much more than you are clearly comfortable with (certainly more than I am comfortable with)

I don't think the FR needed a few old photos to feel incited by what they saw, they simply needed to switch on Sky news I am assuming.

You know as well as I do that the BLM protest was an authentic response to the death of George Floyd in the US. BLM have a massive amount of support up and down this country.
The counter protest today is not authentic to my mind, and should not have been allowed to happen.

However, violence from anyone regardless is not acceptable and we can't just rewrite what has happened and say it was all the FR, when we had so many problems last weekend when they were not even present.
The footage today of the FR is awful, truly dreadful. Someone somewhere needs to urgently get a grip on the situation.

The statues have been covered up before, many times actually. The concrete block has been given more protection than us black people...

People say there isn't racism in the UK, well there you go

Iwouldlikesomecake · 13/06/2020 19:40

Pigeon it is not just ‘one or two things’ that needs to be done. It’s not ‘we need to stop this man’ or ‘we need to stop saying this word’. It is ‘we need to address the systematic underlying racism that underpins a society constructed around the premise that white people are superior’ and all that goes with it including lack of opportunity and lack of equality of opportunity. You have google I assume. Why do you think that the mainstream media is the only place to get education and inform yourself on things that take a book to understand and not a soundbite?

There have been hundreds of memes, videos, articles and blogposts. Explaining the lived experience of black people. Real things that actually happen and not just perception.

Oh and re the death in custody thing; it is important to look at HOW people die in custody too. White people tend to have drug and alcohol related deaths. Black people are disproportionately likely to have violent deaths in custody. If the reasons were broadly similar it would suggest the treatment of those locked up was similar. This suggests it is not.

Sandybval · 13/06/2020 19:40

Some were peaceful but you won't see them, because as we saw last week the media only likes to show those shouting the loudest, being violent and causing damage. Where are the police at the moment? There's videos all over social media of people being hit to the ground, stamped on and bottles smashed over their heads.

pigeon999 · 13/06/2020 19:42

torys why are you so uncomfortable with the figures?

JustAnotherPoster00 · 13/06/2020 19:42

Were you an idiot that voted for Corbyn?

Whats that got to do with anything?

TheRealMcKenna · 13/06/2020 19:45

pigeon999 well said.

I watched a lot of the footage last week with a heavy heart thinking that there would be a horrible backlash. I saw footage of protestors attacking journalists (not UK), the police (who were woefully unprepared) as well as vandalising the Cenotaph.

I’m seeing a hell of a lot of ‘my side is righteous’ here and it’s not going to achieve anything.

I’m done.

Parker231 · 13/06/2020 19:45

Everyone has the right to protest about causes they believe in but today’s protesters, from both organisation weren’t protesters but thugs.

pigeon999 · 13/06/2020 19:46

There have been hundreds of memes, videos, articles and blogposts. Explaining the lived experience of black people. Real things that actually happen and not just perception*

I don't read lots of blogs, nor watch videos. I have zero interest in memes. So how does this reach most people? Mainstream?
I am still wondering how you can expect any improvement if you are not able to define clearly what needs to change.

I am not racist at all. I don't know anyone that is. We have a mixed heritage family, and have a huge amount of friends from all over the world. I am wondering how I, or anyone for that matter, are able to do anything at all to help stop the discrimination?

Seelow · 13/06/2020 19:46

These blokes are social misfits. The young ones are probably too thick to know better but the middle age ones are just so unbelievably sad it’s untrue. You can bet money that the vast majority of these idiots won’t even know what they are protesting about. Even their own mothers would struggle to love them. They are basically men who don’t have a voice and for 99.99% of the time go about their sad little lives with nothing to say of any interest, nothing to offer society and no hope of ever being of any interest to anyone. This gives them their moment. Kicking off with people having a picnic in a park is just tragic.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 13/06/2020 19:47

@Pigeon999

Because if you read the entirety of the article you have linked to it contradicts itself.

The first part says white people are more likely to die in custody, then the second part says that you can read the data differently and it shows that black people are more likely to die in custody.

You took that article and opted to only pullout the parts of it that supports your view point, I was simply sharing the other part. I'm not "uncomfortable with the data" I was uncomfortable with your use of it.

MarshaBradyo · 13/06/2020 19:48

Just looked at the footage. Wth

It’s another level of absurd to have this on top

Feel for the police dealing with that lot

@StephenMcGann
Grenfell. A covered monument that no government minister will be drawing attention to this weekend.

pigeon999 · 13/06/2020 19:51

I don't think the article contradicted itself, it stated the facts. I am not uncomfortable with the truth. Maybe you are?

It is what it is.

PinkyBrain · 13/06/2020 19:52

Parker Entirely agree. Neither side has covered themselves in glory and watching the footage it’s overwhelmingly the police I feel for.

StoneofDestiny · 13/06/2020 19:53

As for the narrative that people on the left ‘hate this country’, it makes me very angry indeed. How dare the far right hijack patriotism, the flag, the Cenotaph, people like Lee Rigby who died for this country, and roll them up in their nasty, jingoistic, racist and violent narrative. How dare they talk about ‘native British’ when they mean white people. It’s disgusting, and anyone who thinks like this ought to be thoroughly ashamed

Exactly.
Right wing Fascist thugs defending The Cenotaph - you couldn't make it up.
