In a miserable, joyless world of queues and masks. A couple of friends have lost their jobs this week. Where are we going with this? When will it end?

Really?? Wow, this is happening to me ll the time, I think I understand the rules but then discover I was wrong all along (this particular one wouldn't have changed anything for me)

Geraniumblue · 13/06/2020 08:39

It’s miserable trying to keep things going. I am back at work, which helps. But have run out of ideas for weekends. We’re in Wales so there’s lovely countryside and that’s it really. Nothing else allowed.

Ghostlyglow · 13/06/2020 08:56

Exercise was never just an hour! It wasn't.

Mascotte · 13/06/2020 08:57

In Scotland it wasn't an hour and wasn't once a day. Don't think in England either. Well, the law wasn't.

StealthPolarBear · 13/06/2020 08:59

I can confirm I've checked back to the transcript from 23/3. It was definitely one period of exercise. Duration not mentioned.
It just proves how little you can rely on your own understanding /memory to me!

Ghostlyglow · 13/06/2020 09:03

I think that because the information and instructions have been so vague, and because we have been repeatedly told to use common sense, everyone has a different interpretation of everything tbh.

EnlightenedOwl · 13/06/2020 09:05

Wfh is shit the remote technology is always breaking gone from desk chair 2 screens to laptop and dining table

Mascotte · 13/06/2020 09:17

What they said the guidance was was not the actual law.

Mascotte · 13/06/2020 09:17

It's like the five miles in Scotland now: guidance, not law.

Homemadeandfromscratch · 13/06/2020 09:19

I thought it was ridiculous then, the loss of our rights and freedoms being willingly given up; in fact, people petitioning for them to be taken away and here we are, 3 months later, in the exact same position.

There was always 2 ways to see it: either as a personal attack that you petulantly oppose considering a "loss of right and freedom" dramatic much Hmm
or as a protection against OTHER people! Of course it's always possible to lock yourself out but if it's not national the infection spread and you are a lot more at risk anyway, everything is being disturbed, your employer doesn't have to allow you to WFH and the schools wouldn't have had to teach the children from home.

the mild "lockdown" was not strict enough, was proven to still work (but not enough) and definitively needed. A stricter lockdown on an ISLAND FFS would have been very possible, much more effective and much shorter. Instead of dragging things on like we are. Our economy will suffer mainly because we stupidly refuse to address the pandemic effectively, and people are bored so decided that ignoring the problem will make it go away.

Homemadeandfromscratch · 13/06/2020 09:23

Exercise was never just an hour! It wasn't.

of course it wasn't. Common sense would have been useful too... find yourself in a crowded area, you don't linger.
Take the kids out in the middle of nowhere and you see no-one for 3 hours: you are fine.

Sadly common sense has been completely lacking. Add the childish attitude: I do what I want and you can't make me, or if it's not strictly banned it means I can... Just read the thread about essential shopping TRIPS.

that country is an embarrassment sometimes.

GoodbyeRosie · 13/06/2020 09:38

A few weeks ago I saw a thread about masks.

I was stunned at the number of selfish twats saying ' I'm nit going to wear' one..because they didnt want to. Or it made them feel a bit uncomfortable.

I knew then that this country is fucked.

We might as well have gone for the Tories 'herd immunity - let's just see who dies 'plan. Could have all been over by now.

Our character as English( won't group any other h9me nation in there) people is dripping with entitlement and exceptionalism . We are English, we ruled the world. We don't need the EU , we don't need educating on human rights, and we definitely can see off this 'flu' with a positive, Chuchillian attitude.

It's absolutely pathetic.

Nihiloxica · 13/06/2020 09:47

I'm not going to wear a mask.

I don't want to live in a society where face covering is the norm.

Lockdown has taught me that I can't trust the people around me not to turn temporary emergency measures into an indefinite default.

Babymamaroon · 13/06/2020 09:51

From my personal perspective, lockdown is the best thing that has happened for us. It's given us much needed balance in our lives, lots of family time and has cemented WFH as a permanent new normal for my husband and me. As we're busy working we've not had time to sit back and be bored!

We've discovered beautiful walks where we live, which we may not have done otherwise. Our children have all benefitted so much from being at home and stepping back from their busy lives.

We have a big garden so space for them to play and we've both got our jobs. I'm extremely grateful.

I do miss not having a holiday to look forward to and I miss socialising with our family and friends. We have young children so didn't have the most dazzling social life of an evening to miss in the first place.

We desperately need to get the economy on track for recovery so am hoping we come out of it ASAP. For those people that have struggled for various reasons I hope they can bounce back quickly.

and this is why fines are in place... Don't wear a mask at home, but you don't get to decide that others are not important enough and YOU can put them at risk.

Same with seat belts in cars.

SudokuBook · 13/06/2020 09:58

I don’t trust the government on masks. When 1 in 40 people had the virus they told us they didn’t make a difference and now 1 in 1000 and dropping people have it they do? Fuck them and their bullshit and lies. So they were either lying then, which is unforgivable as it will have caused deaths, or they’re lying now and the mask wearing instructions are just tokenism.

Nihiloxica · 13/06/2020 10:30

I can't wear a mask.

Performing pointless rituals to calm the irrational fears of the public closes my airways and makes it hard for me to breathe.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/06/2020 10:37

or they’re lying now and the mask wearing instructions are just tokenism.

It is. The government have made themselves look tossers over this. For months the "experts" have said there was no scientific evidence a mask or face "covering" as they like to call them made very much difference.

They've probably done this to try and sort out the terminally terrified who have been calling for it for months.

Mascotte · 13/06/2020 10:39

@PhilCornwall1 agree.

Kazzyhoward · 13/06/2020 10:40

I think that because the information and instructions have been so vague

The "real" guidance/rules as per the gov.uk website have been very clear throughout.

Trouble is that the media didn't report them correctly, and too many people have relied on poor media reporting rather than reading the official guidance themselves.

Kazzyhoward · 13/06/2020 10:42

Masks weren't needed at first because most people shouldn't have been out and about in the first place. Pointless wearing a mask if there were few people about and you were able to social distance.

Masks are needed now, as more and more people are using public transport, going to shops etc. and 2m is getting harder and harder to adhere to.

thegreenlight · 13/06/2020 10:42

As a healthy woman 37 year old woman I am 4 times more likely to die of an accident this year than covid yet I don’t usually stay inside to avoid accidents. The world has gone to hell in a handcart. I’m not scared of it (but then my husband and I have worked through it, him full time and me on a rota) I just want things to return to normal. Not this shitty ‘new normal’. Actual proper normal. Let those who aren’t worried about it or at risk carry on with their lives normally. If you’re worried about it stay in.

EnlightenedOwl · 13/06/2020 10:44

Agree it's to appease the hysterical
Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/06/2020 10:45

I'm not going to wear a mask.

Then in my opinion, you should be confined to your home.

You wear a mask to stop you from infecting others. There's nothing that other people can do to protect themselves from you. Already here in London you have to wear a mask to travel on public transport. I hope they make it mandatory in shops too.

No one has the right to possibly infect other people.

Nihiloxica · 13/06/2020 10:51

Then in my opinion, you should be confined to your home.

You think everyone should be imprisoned in their homes indefinitely.

Sadly for you and your controlling impulses, the UK is still mostly a free society and people don't have to do what you say.

I know it's been fun having the "do what I say or you are a murderer" thing to play with for a while and it will be hard to give that up.

But the truth is, you can't confine me to my home. I was willing to stay in for a while before I realised the power it would give to petty tyrants. I will never obey another lockdown.
