To ask your ethnic group?

...in your country of origin or parents' or grandparents' or ancestors' country of origin (if you know)?

Inspired by a thread here and I had to google an ethnic group mentioned. It's led to the interest in different ethnic groups in other countries and I'll like to learn more about other people's.

I'm English (with a Scottish heritage. Mum was part English and Scottish) but from ancestors, I've been told Anglo-Saxons who're Germanic tribes that migrated from Denmark and Germany to the island in the 5th century.

Both parents and generations before them are Irish. Probably some southern Scandinavia from the late 11th century but definitely no Spanish unfortunately.

BadAlice · 12/06/2020 08:49

White British. Mixture of Irish, Scottish, English, a bit of French, and some Romany in there too but it’s all so far back that I don’t really know how much. I’d like to do one of those DNA tests really.

Daftasabroom · 12/06/2020 08:50

This is a really interesting topic, we have discussed this as a family and had look up the difference between race, ethnicity and culture.

Race: white north west European.
Ethnicity: coastal/semi rural south UK.

Imissmoominmama · 12/06/2020 08:54

Both Grandfathers were Irish (one north, one south), as was one grandmother (north); my other grandmother was Welsh. My parents are Welsh and English; I’m English.

I look Celtic; I have red hair, green eyes and fair skin.

midnightstar66 · 12/06/2020 09:07

Glad your enjoying it OP. Ignore the ones that think you aren't allowed to be interested in something because they aren't. I'm stepping away for now as it's all too much thought for this time of the morning and I've lots to do. Look forward to revisiting later with a glass of wine and reading the new responses when the house is silent.

bojkaboom · 12/06/2020 09:09

Thanks @midnightstar66. I intend to do just that Flowers

Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria. Both parents the same.Smile

SimonJT · 12/06/2020 09:16

Ethnicity largely Asian (indian subcontinent version), like many people I have a white British ancestor due to the amount of sexual violence during partition. I sadly very much take after that person (as does my father), I have pale skin, a very straight nose and I’m six foot. When I’m not tanned people often think I’m Italian.

I’m from a specific area where a large number of people have green eyes and pale skin from immigration from Iran, this also means we have paler skin than most ethnic groups in the Indian subcontinent.

BiBabbles · 12/06/2020 09:20

'Ethnic groups' and 'ethnicities' is still heavily used to describe groups in sociology and many other disciplines -- and pretty sure racist cops use a wide variety of horrible terms, academically derived and otherwise. Honestly not sure what term we'd use to mean the same thing, heritage and background I guess would be closest, but I think many answer those differently, nationality has some overlap but would leave many out, especially in heavily colonized areas, and race really isn't the same thing.

Technically, depending on where I was in the US, I was considered Metis or Mestizo - someone mixed mainly of American Indigenous and European, though some have more specific definitions for each. That was never used in my home though, where I was just generally called a mongrel. My mother particularly liked to use 'Heinz 57 variety mongrel'. Her side is a bit more European than my father's, but even only knowing only a few generations, they're both a heavy mix of many groups. In the US, I'd be regularly though not always seen as Latina or part-American Indigenous In the UK, I'm far more likely to have others view me as Eastern European though I have been mistaken for many other groups (the joys of having people slowly talk and gestures at me and then be confused when I respond in a twangy English). On forms, I just used Mixed - Other, personally, I don't feel I have a common tie to any group to identify with and mixed is the only way I feel comfortable describing that, though if asked my background or heritage, I'd say I'm Midwestern American. What little I know of my ancestors is that for last 4-5 generations+, they went to or were in that particular spot of the world to marry and have kids and while I can't say genetically, socially and culturally I think that had a bigger effect that what ethnic mix I am which I'll never entirely know (though I did find some new bits recently after a google led to me finding my maternal grandparents on findagrave.com which links to other relatives I hadn't known before).

PlanDeRaccordement · 12/06/2020 09:25

I’m Han ethnicity. Well 75%. I have a French grandfather which is how my family got to France and became French but with Chinese ancestry and extended family still in China.
It’s a bit of a romantic story as in WWII my grandfather was living in Indochina running a hotel for tourists but had to flee the Japanese invasion when he met my grandmother who was also fleeing the Japanese.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 12/06/2020 09:33

I’m Scottish back to the clans and before. My dad was dark skinned like spanish or Italian with black hair and dark eyes, he could go for a walk on a sunny day and look almost middle eastern he’d go so dark so I think there is some Mediterranean blood and I know there is Norwegian in my mums family as some point, they are are all very blond and blue eyed.

Circe2020 · 12/06/2020 09:35

Had the DNA done, 25% Scandinavian, 40%Irish (Munster) 35% English.

Lollypop4 · 12/06/2020 09:35

Im white British.
Maternal side are Welsh.
Paternal side are English.

catspyjamas123 · 12/06/2020 09:38

I am human. My earliest ancestors evolved in Africa and then spread out across the planet. All humans are related to those ancestors. The idea of ethnic groups is divisive.

bojkaboom · 12/06/2020 09:38

@Realsunkissedtan I used to work with two Nigerian ladies, one yoruba, the other Igbo. They were very close friends but always had this hilarious banter/ "fake mini war" (as they called it) between them about Yoruba/Igbo ethnicity.Grin

We spent a lot of time together and I learnt so much about Nigeria and the different ethnic groups from them. It's been so long, so hoping to refresh my memory. Thank you.

I've name changed for this, as I've all but given my address and date of birth!!

White Irish... all they way through for the most part. My mum did some research a while back and found that her ancestors came to Ireland with the Spanish Armada! She has lovely brown eyes and her natural hair colour was dark dark brown, almost black. She takes a tan easily.
My dad looks more Irish. Lots of freckles but takes a tan.
I'm blonde, more a mousy brown now (I'm not actually sure as it's been 20 years since I seen my real colour) my husband is dark haired and has brown eyes but has the most Irish skin you will ever see!
Then the biggest surprise was that our children are incredibly ginger! Like I mean bright orange! And even weirder, they take a tan!!!
I'm as pasty white as they come and the only colour I get is from a bottle. My sister on the other hand must have bagged some of my mums Spanish heritage as she only has to look at the sun and she goes a lovely golden olive colour

lemmathelemmin · 12/06/2020 09:42

You're welcome @bojkaboom :)

I don't know much about Uganda either. I'm mixed where my mother is English and father Ugandan. As I get older, the more I want to learn about my dad's culture.

bojkaboom · 12/06/2020 09:44

@PlanDeRaccordement It was your Han mention I saw on another thread. Thank you for inspiring this one Smile

I'm British, welsh heritage on my mums side and I think polish heritage from my dads side.

Realsunkissedtan · 12/06/2020 10:15

@bojkaboom Haha. It's common to have goodnatured teasing among friends of different ethnic groups. There's also either general piss-taking or light teasing among those who aren't friends. Not everyone.

Then there's serious division, hatred and violence by some extremists within the groups.

Sweetlikecoca · 12/06/2020 10:17

@bojkaboom

It is to me about mineHmm. Don't think I tagged you specifically, so if you don't wish to answer, off you go then.

I mentioned your or your parents or your grandparents or your ancestors so people can choose which one they want to answer. No one's obliged to state a specific generation.

Absolutely OP you tell them!!
Sweetlikecoca · 12/06/2020 10:19

awesomeaircraft · 12/06/2020 10:21
