I went to Morrison's today.
I'm stood in the queue for the deli counter.
She shouts for my turn so I go over
(Obviously I cant see what I want,so before I order I look at the items )
I'm stood back (not right next to the counter)
She shouts .."can you step back "
(Bare in mind she's behind the deli counter and the counter is quite wide outwards)
So I say "I am back,I'm trying to see what I want to get "
Step back further and block the aisle now ..
Then she throws my meat on the counter.
I go to pick it up and she pipes up again
"I did ask you to step back"
So I reply .."how the hell am I meant to pick it up from on top of the counter without moving forward"
Aibu to think people are getting a bit stupid here and not using common sense.

@DiggeryDoop so just because they've had a shit day with people not following rules gives them the right to speak to everyone like crap?

OP posts:
DiggeryDoop · 12/06/2020 18:06

I didn’t say it was okay to speak to everyone like crap.
I said some people, for whatever reason (stupidity/entitlement), will not socially distance, thus causing staff to have to intervene.

DiggeryDoop · 12/06/2020 18:09

I cannot speak for the failings of supermarket management. All I will say is that as usual, it’s those on the shop floor who are on the receiving end of public abuse.

PickAChew · 12/06/2020 18:42

@2bunny I have very minor hearing loss but it's enough that the combination of screens and piped music make it impossible to hear what someone is saying, sometimes. It's bloody frustrating and sometimes a little embarrassing.

bonzo77 · 12/06/2020 19:20

The Aldi I use has a sensible one way system and someone at the door to manage entry. Last time I was in there the person on the door rushed me forward, leaving the first aisle overcrowded. I wanted to hang back for it to clear. Another member of staff told me to come in but go the wrong way round the one way system. I said it was fine, I’m not in a rush and happy to wait. He started shouting at me, saying that I didn’t care that 1000’s of people were dying! I said I did care so I didn’t want to go the wrong way round the one way system, as I would pass more people and either have to go back down the crowded first aisle, or miss it altogether. He really went mad at me and I later heard him
swearing about me and other customers to another member of staff. Once at the checkout I asked to speak to someone about it. The man on the till asked me what it was about, and when I told him he said to email or call head office, as the person who was so aggressive with me had form as WAS the manager. I can’t face that store for now, and am getting Tesco deliveries instead. Which is not great when trying to spend less.

ahhaohho · 12/06/2020 19:35

God it's absolutely ridiculous.

I got told off in tescos for queue jumping at the tills. The supervisor made such a scene, I was obviously mortified, apologised and moved my stuff immediately. I said I didn't see there was a queue because it was so far away with a sarcastic well it's been the same system for weeks now.

I was too busy staring at the fucking arrows all over the floor after hearing another customer get a bollocking!!

ActuallyItsEugene · 12/06/2020 19:48

YANBU OP.

I'm getting right fucked off with the hysterical, wannabe Stasi, perfect Peter, prefect, 'do I get a gold star now miss?' bastards.
I hate going in food shops.

I hate hearing supermarket workers referring to their colleagues as key workers. I was waiting at the lottery till and someone walked past and said 'Oh, one of our keyworkers will be along to assist you in a minute' - oh fuck off.
Some of them have developed such a nasty, haughty, god type complex which they need to drop immediately. I understand you need to work but that isn't my fault.

The bouncers they've put on the door usually have a very gruff manner about them too. This is Asda, not a fucking nightclub. 'Not tonight miss.'

The one way systems can get to fuck. I'm not going down an aisle I don't need just to follow the poxy map you've put in.

The pharmacy counters that expect you to have extendoarms and pay for your goods behind a 2m line...

I'm fit and healthy but I can feel my blood pressure rising each time I need to go shopping.

BojoKilledMyMojo · 12/06/2020 19:57

To be honest I couldn't really get worked up over it. If me standing back a bit made her feel a bit safer then so be it.

Marmaladey · 12/06/2020 19:57

At my local supermarket they’ve ballsed up the one way markings so you actually can’t follow them and get to every aisle. It’s great fun.

PickAChew · 13/06/2020 00:39

Our M&S is pretty chilled, btw. It's the refuge of co-dependent elderly couples who haven't been allowed into Sainsburys, together. They did have signs up saying if you can't manage 2m, make it 1m, but have clearly been told to scrub them out.

Rosebel · 13/06/2020 06:32

Oh come on. It's not hard to follow the arrows on the floor, they are pretty obvious. And I'd love to know where you all live as apparently all the asiles are empty of people.
Retail is shit at the best of times and now because people can't follow the arrows it's even worse.
All retail staff I know have worked all through the pandemic, they aren't allowed time off or holidays, a bit of empathy from customers would be nice but of course they are just supermarket workers so don't deserve respect.

MrsRogerLima · 13/06/2020 06:45

Off topic but, @simdd was the salad bar in operation at your Morrisons? I have been craving a Morrisons salad and haven't wanted to visit, wait to get in, get yelled at and then get in there are it's not open.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 13/06/2020 06:55

I’ve had it in Morrisons - awful experience that’s put me off shopping there. Shop assistants in the aisle were very close, no social distancing at all but the check out last shouted at me several times to ‘Get back’ but I was only putting shopping on conveyor belt - how am I supposed to do that at a 2m distance ? My arms aren’t that long!

Classic was aldi who wouldn’t let me put my shopping into an open bag in my trolley as it wasn’t ‘social distancing’. But the same action and distance to put shopping into the trolley without the bag was fine. Madness. I think some people either forget or don’t understand what social distancing is and just trot out the same lines either out of fear or for a bit of a power trip

KatherineJaneway · 13/06/2020 07:36

Oh come on. It's not hard to follow the arrows on the floor, they are pretty obvious.

Obvious but not logical. Local Tesco has the two first aisles going the same way. One fruit and one veg so I want goods from both. How do I do that without going against the arrows?

After that it is logical until you get to the last but one aisle. You come 'down' the previous aisle then you are also meant to travel 'down' the last but one aisle - how? I mean please tell me how to get to the top of that aisle without going against some arrows because I can't figure it out.

vanillandhoney · 13/06/2020 07:58

Oh come on. It's not hard to follow the arrows on the floor, they are pretty obvious.

Obvious, but totally illogical.

I had to go into Tesco to get some kitten food. Didn't need anything else. Only had to go in as we rescued the kitten (totally unplanned) and didn't have anything to feed him. I had to go down five aisles to get to the kitten food, instead of just walking past the kiosk and half way up the pet food aisle. I passed more people following the arrows than I would have done if I'd gone straight to pet food and then to the checkout.

There's no logic behind following a load of arrows around a supermarket. Humans don't shop like that. What about if you forget something? Or find a better offer and have to put something back? You have to go around the entire shop again and come into contact with even more people. It's daft.

Looks like I’m the only one who hasn’t been told off then!

I think I’m the teller-off though, I asked a man to step back when queuing outside tesco. I was on the 2m floor marking, but he stood directly behind me with no regard for distancing. I wasn’t rude though, just pointed out the floor markings.

simdd · 13/06/2020 08:38

@MrsRogerLima no the salad bar was shut but what local branch have made some separate pots up
Spicy chicken pasta
Potato salad
Tuna pasta
Etc for £2 and they are a life saver as I've massively craved a salad.

simdd · 13/06/2020 08:39

@MrsRogerLima that made no sense Grin
What I meant to type was .."what my local branch have done"

Please don't do this there's no need
LadyofTheManners · 13/06/2020 09:11

@MrsRogerLima mine hasn't had them for ages eve though the fish, cheese and neat counters are all open now
I'm so missing the salad bar

Justatonic · 13/06/2020 09:14

I had exactly the same in a Morrisons. A really horrible encounter with a batshit woman, Morrisons obviously have a policy of trying employ lunatics!

rayoflightboy · 13/06/2020 09:14

Penney's reopened here yesterday, the queues where something else.

Might have a mooch in during the week.Could so with a few things.

justanotherneighinparadise · 13/06/2020 09:16

I call it old person chess. I move forward one, they move back one, I move to the side, they move to the other side. My DP
even has to power to repel people as though he were magnetic 🧲. He is trying to buy an item at a petroleum station, person comes round the aisle and is propelled backwards by his very presence. It’s amazing!
