I went to Morrison's today.
I'm stood in the queue for the deli counter.
She shouts for my turn so I go over
(Obviously I cant see what I want,so before I order I look at the items )
I'm stood back (not right next to the counter)
She shouts .."can you step back "
(Bare in mind she's behind the deli counter and the counter is quite wide outwards)
So I say "I am back,I'm trying to see what I want to get "
Step back further and block the aisle now ..
Then she throws my meat on the counter.
I go to pick it up and she pipes up again
"I did ask you to step back"
So I reply .."how the hell am I meant to pick it up from on top of the counter without moving forward"
Aibu to think people are getting a bit stupid here and not using common sense.

But I do know that, in your situation, having had the fuel stopped because my son was in his phone, I'd have assumed it was a new member of staff or someone misunderstanding the rules and gone in for a chat and a laugh about it

Did you actually read my first post? I assumed when I went in that the petrol pump had run out of fuel. Why would I have assumed it was because my son was on the phone when it had never happened to me before? I was perfectly pleasant as a fuel pump running out is clearly not the attendant’s fault.

Yes I read the whole painful thing.

Once you realised the reason, you were annoyed about it weren't you?

I think you accused me of 'defending the unreasonable'.

"When I got to pay I asked him whether the petrol had run out and he said “no, he was on a mobile phone” and pointed at my car."

Yeah, really rude and unreasonable. I imagine you walked out clutching your pearls.

I think there's just two types of customer really.

The ones who are asked to do/not do something in a tone of voice they consider to be unnecessarily abrupt, and get annoyed about it - they think staff are enjoying a power trip and rather liked 'telling me off' or 'talking to me like shit.'

And then there are the ones who know that supermarket staff are working hard in unfamiliar conditions, are tasked with enforcing company rules and wider social distancing guidance, are routinely being treated badly by customers, are repeating the same piece of information many times and are only getting paid something close to minimum wage for the privilege, while having all of the same stresses at home as the rest of us. These customers acknowledge that they may actually have done something wrong, needed reminding and just get on and do it.

LadyofTheManners · 18/06/2020 18:17

@rawlikesushi

"To simply scream at them just sets the customer on edge And yes, we are used to being served by someone, not treated like a potential leper."

Oh they're screaming at you know? This feels like an exaggeration.

You're not being treated like a leper, you're being treated like someone who could be infected with an infectious disease during an unprecedented pandemic.

I was referring to OP who was screamed at

That's the problem, they probably didn't read what you said they assumed you were daring to comment on a random shop worker and that is not allowed apparently You know, forgetting that in all walks of life, you get good people at their job and you get shite people at their job. Except, it appears, in shop work.

Omfg I had this EXACT thing happen to me in Sainsbury's, stood by the checkout 2ms back and check out woman shouts 'CAN YOU MOVE BACK ' .....umm no I can't bloody move any further back coz then I'll be blocking the aisle, she then turns and apologises to customer infront of me?!! Cheers love thanks for embarrassing me...

Ilovetolurk · 18/06/2020 18:21

If you say so @rawlikesushi 🤷‍♀️

rawlikesushi · 18/06/2020 18:53

"I was referring to OP who was screamed at."

OP said the employee shouted 'can you step back?'

I'm sure it was harrowing but no mention of screaming unless the story changed later on.

rawlikesushi · 18/06/2020 18:55

"You know, forgetting that in all walks of life, you get good people at their job and you get shite people at their job. Except, it appears, in shop work."

Well you do, there are just no particularly bad examples of 'shite people' so far on this thread.

rawlikesushi · 18/06/2020 18:57

"Omfg I had this EXACT thing happen to me in Sainsbury's, stood by the checkout 2ms back and check out woman shouts 'CAN YOU MOVE BACK '"

Why were you embarrassed if you were doing what you were meant to do?

And how is 'can you move back?' embarrassing?

Surely you either realised you were wrong and moved back, or explained why this was impossible?
