I'm so disappointed with my revisited childhood memory

I bought some piccalilli in last week and I had this memory of having corned beef sandwiches and piccalilli as a child. In my memory it was the best sandwich ever.
I've just had some as an early lunch and I'm so sad. They weren't good. They weren't awful either but they just weren't what I remembered! I kind of wish I had left it in my memory now Confused
Anyone else disappointed like this?

Most British chocolate is horrible now coz of bloody palm oil 🤢

Cereal doesn't taste of anything coz of less salt and sugar 🙄

One thing that still reminds me of being a child in the 70s is Heinz ravioli - yum 😋

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 12/06/2020 02:05

Armchair thriller utterly terrified me as a child, even the titles freaked me out, can’t believe my parents let me watch it, the nun with no face scarred my childhood.

Plenty of fresh cream buns in Northern Irish bakeries

Apple Puffs, cream doughnut, apple cream doughnut, cream cookies (synthetic or real fresh cream), cream iced finger, Cream coconut ginger, cream slice (down market mill feuille😂). I'm sure there's more. It's been donkeys since I had a cream bun.

Mine was Frozen baguette pizza. I lived on them being a fussy eater. Absolutely rank. 🤮

BubblyWater · 12/06/2020 03:43

@wanderings That is the sweetest memory!

Bellevu · 12/06/2020 07:34

@biddybird

On that subject, I once (approx 22 yrs ago) had a chocolate and cherry ice cream that I remember as being the most divine thing I had ever tasted. It was a major UK supermarket brand, possibly Somerfield or Asda (somewhere I don't usually shop). Does anyone remember this? If so pleeeeease tell me what it is/was so I may seek it out again!
Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia?

The UK only seems to sell the frozen yogurt outside cinemas now. I pig out when I see it in America. Blush

RuffleCrow · 12/06/2020 07:40

I always avoided it like the plague. Genuinely thought it was vomit as a child. Sorry op.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/06/2020 07:45

I bought Monkey series on DVD

Ex and I sat down to watch it all excited well that didn’t last long what a load of pants

However The Muppet Show was a fantastic in the 70’s as it is not watch it often with ds

Hagisonthehill · 12/06/2020 07:48

I loved fundus crispy pancakes,I too revisited them with my dd and no crispiness and the filling was vile.
I often see freybentos pies but know that this will never be as I remember.
Tunnocks tea cakes still taste delicious, toblerone(no palm oil).
The original Clangers are still good as are Whacky races.
Playgrounds were fun.The roundabout, rocking horse(my brother still has the scar) and the slides, too long and steep the climb up the wrong way and with always one snotty, crying child trying to climb back down the steps through all the other kids. And we went to them unsupervised at a very young age back in the day when you took yourself off to primary school and back.

zippyswife · 12/06/2020 07:53

I haven’t even eaten my breakfast and I want a cheese and piccalilli sandwich. Maybe with cucumber.

MyDogPatch · 12/06/2020 08:10

My husband has fond memories of Wimpy as a child. He grew up in poverty but his aunt (who was only about 15 years older) used to take him as a treat.

There is still a Wimpy in Bermondsey South London and he wants to take DD and me to have the experience. Reading this thread I wonder if it's a wise idea. Confused

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/06/2020 08:14

@Myshitisreal the chicago town sub pizza are gorgeous and baguettey

Cam2020 · 12/06/2020 08:28

@MyDogPatch I loved Wimpey! I have vivid memories of going to my local one after school on a Friday sometimes with my mum as a small child. We'd always share a banana split for dessert. Loved the wholemeal bun and was always bemused by the strange sausage thing on the menu.

I think kids now might find it a bit bland compared to some of the other chain burger restaurants - so much choice!

NeutralJanet · 12/06/2020 08:54

I see Netflix is doing a series of the Babysitters Club soon, I really hope it is good. I loved those books, the thrill of finding one at the library that I hadn't read yet was a highlight of my childhood.

ArbitraryNameChange · 12/06/2020 09:08

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels just seeing that picture turned me cold.

I was about 5 when they were on and I remember watching one where a dog disappeared???

UnfinishedSymphon · 12/06/2020 09:11

@lifestooshort123

Butterscotch Angel Delight - it was such a treat in the 60s (with Dream Topping, yum) but we had it last year and it was bleh... 😔
If I was ever nauseous and needed to be sick, butterscotch Angel Delight was what I thought of to make it happen! I remember having it at school and it was THE worst thing I'd ever tasted and I promptly threw up.

Sorry :-(

Dillydallyingthrough · 12/06/2020 09:17

@scrambledSmegs - love Gareth Marengi Dark Place but like you don't remember laughing a lot when it was on it was just background noise! Now think its hysterical.

Not sure if you have seen Dean Learners interviews - highly recommend, really funny!

ScrambledSmegs · 12/06/2020 09:24

Dillydallyingthrough - I remember, it was Man to Man with Dean Learner wasn't it? I haven't watched that since it was on air either, another one to watch!

IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone · 12/06/2020 09:37

@biddybird I was wondering if it was a Gino Ginelli ice cream?

OP posts:
biddybird · 12/06/2020 11:17

@Bellevu Not Cherry Garcia… the one I'm thinking of was chocolate ice cream with a cherry swirl. I had great hopes yesterday evening when I discovered they'd made a Chocolate Cherry Garcia, but apparently this is some kind of low-fat monstrosity!

@IJustWantFiveMinutesAlone I'm pretty sure this one was a supermarket brand but I will investigate your suggestion!

Oh I loved Monkey, I wouldn’t want to despoil the memory by seeing it now. Most children’s TV from the past really doesn’t hold up now. I think anything by Jim Henderson like the Muppets and anything made by Postgate and Firmin like Bagpuss or the Clangers do because they were made with love and care by people who were absolutely devoted to what they were doing.

As soon as I saw a mention of sandwich spread I knew it would be related to tasting like vomit.
I hate to deflate your balloon but it always tasted this way

Ladybirdbookworm · 12/06/2020 15:00

zara
The armchair thriller was called The BlackNun ...scared me senseless.
I still remember the LWT advert with the tower bridge just before it started. I'm sure it was on a Tuesday night.
I still love Sandwich spread. It was always one of my favourite treats at parties when I was a little girl.
Can anyone remember that tinned milk that you could whip ...I used to love it
