To put the heating on?

Currently 6° in my house. Rain is coming down in buckets. I'm seriously thinking about sticking the heating on for a bit but it feels slightly ridiculous given that it's June and supposedly summer!

I reckon you are near me - we took a picture similar to yours yesterday, on the kids first car trip since lockdown.
Yes, its miserable, and I can totally believe the 14C once the thermometer was reset. Our well insulated house is about 18 today.
Enjoy the heating.

QuestionableMouse · 11/06/2020 13:13

It's about 115 years old. Have new windows and doors but it's brick built so no way of adding cavity wall insulation or the like.

Downstairs is all hard floors (quarry tile in the kitchen/bathroom/hall and hardwood in the living room) which doesn't help. The tiles are beautiful but freezing and I've been thinking about some lino/vinyl flooring over them.

I’ve switched mine to constant as it is cold and very wet here.
Will light the fire also this afternoon.
Thinking back just a week or so when it was so hot and no rain for weeks on end it seems crazy but I was cold !

QuestionableMouse · 11/06/2020 13:15

@RedCatBlueCat I live in County Durham. That pic was from last year. I'd booked to go back and lockdown happened. Feel like I'm never going to get a day at the seaside in the sun 😂😂

I had an argument with DH about this yesterday. I put it on, he said 'you can't it's June'.

Fuck that, if I'm cold and it's cold outside it's going on.

PickAChew · 11/06/2020 13:20

Just has a cold wait for dh in a Durham car park but it's warmer than 6C so your kitchen can't be that cold.

CremeEggThief · 11/06/2020 13:21

@QuestionableMouse, I'm also in County Durham. If you will, I will!Grin

PickAChew · 11/06/2020 13:23

Just caught up. Rain just started here.

PickAChew · 11/06/2020 13:24

And I definitely will! Hands still icy cold.

Dugsbollox · 11/06/2020 13:26

We had the heating on yesterday, when it's cold I dont care what seasons it alleges to be! I have the window open today though, it's a bit cool maybe, but the fresh air is nice.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 11/06/2020 13:31

SE here and i put it in for an hour this morning the kids were freezing

weepingwillow22 · 11/06/2020 13:33

I lit a fire to cheer my self up. Wondering now what time it is acceptable to have a glass of port.

QuestionableMouse · 11/06/2020 13:40

Port isn't my tipple but have one now. It'll warm you up.

Wish I had a proper fire. I have a useless faux coal gas thing that is horrible to light and only warms the area directly in front of it. 😂😂😂

@PickAChew I find Durham cold on a normal day! My house is on a bit of a hill so the wind really hits it.

HeronLanyon · 11/06/2020 13:43

weeping I think fire time coincides with tipple time usually. Unless you have early (!) morning fires in which case that would be coffee time. After then it saves firewood to have a little extra warmth from a glass 🥃

Minniee · 11/06/2020 13:44

I put mine on in August if I feel cold.

pinktaxi · 11/06/2020 13:44

Mine was 18C and it's on now.

CovidTroels · 11/06/2020 13:47

I put mine on about an hour ago. Raining and cold here.

InspectorCludo · 11/06/2020 13:48

@MrsJBaptiste I blame my parents!!!

paap1975 · 11/06/2020 13:56

We occasionally have a fire in August. We live near a forest and it came make the jouse feel damp. If you need a fire or heating, just do it!

pigsDOfly · 11/06/2020 13:59

Why would anyone sit in a cold house wondering if it's all right to put the heating on because it should be warm outside, and in, but isn't.

If it's cold, it's cold regardless of the month.

I took the dog for a walk earlier wearing the coat I walk her in in the winter. It's overcast and there's a strong cold wind.

My house is very cold most of the time and I'm a chilly person so my heating is on probably more than a lot of people consider reasonable.

If I'm sitting in my house in at least one jumper and I'm cold the heating goes on, if I'm still cold, I put it up higher.

I'm buggered if I'm going to freeze because it's June. Wanting to be warm doesn't indicate a lack of moral fibre.

RedCatBlueCat · 11/06/2020 14:02

You cant be more than an hour from me, Mouse.
You will get back there for Seaview fish n chips.
Enjoy the heating and looking at your photos of the tram and pier.

Nat6999 · 11/06/2020 14:05

If you can, get your house insulated, cavity walls & your loft. If you are on benefits, you can get grants to get it done. You may have already got your loft insulated from years ago, by today's standards it isn't deep enough & may need additional insulation on top.

pinktaxi · 11/06/2020 14:06

I LOVE saltburn. A seaside gem

Scarby9 · 11/06/2020 14:18

The trouble with old houses is that you do have to let them breathe. Stone is not at home to cavity wall insulation, floor boards with ventilation do strike cold even through thick underlay and carpet when the wind is in the wrong direction, and chimneys give open access to the elements at times. I love my house, but it is colder than a modern house.

Wynston · 11/06/2020 14:21

If i didn't owe nearly a thousand pounds to the electric company id have my heating back on!
