Builders or neighbour BU?

Anotherdayanother2 · 10/06/2020 12:34

I currently have building works going on and granted my neighbour has had to put up with a lot, I'm not sure who is being unreasonable.

I had builders working on the party wall so sought permission from my neighbour. The builders told her they wouldn't access her garden but would work from my side only - although there would be some debris which they will clean up. She was fine with this.

Day arrives. 8.15 am they step onto neighbours garden to look at the wall. Neighbour goes ballistic, saying they were trespassing, she could have been naked etc. There is no fence between the properties.

Builder storms off to the front where I have just arrived. Neighbour comes to the front and starts saying to the builder that had it been a black man in her garden and she was a white woman (she is mixed) then the police would be involved. But as she is black then she just has to put up with it.

Builder apologises and said he was merely looking and quits saying he cant work under these conditions.

I stood there in shock as had only just arrived and couldn't work out what was going on. The conversation lasted 2 minutes at most.

I generally get on well with my neighbour to the extent that there has been no prior conflict and we only last week spoke about erecting a new fence together.

So who is being unreasonable?

doesn't give the neighbour the right to not have a fence for four years
She has every right not to have a fence. It’s not a requirement of owning the boundary. Her reaction was over the top, but then she was promised no one would enter her property. Both parties sound like dicks.

doesn't give the neighbour the right to not have a fence for four years
This is actually one of the most hilariously stupid things I've ever read on MN. A fence is a boundary feature. There is no obligation on anyone to erect one if they don't want to. If the neighbours don't like that, they can put their own fence up, provided it's on their own land. Fact.

understandmenow · 10/06/2020 17:34

What about dogs with no fence @Homemadeandfromscratch or rabbits, tortoises etc, do you expect them to know not to enter "your property", do they have the minimum level of intelligence required?

You'd be some sort of stupid to think it's reasonable not to have a fence for four years?

What's the saying

Good fences make goon neighbours?

You're being deliberately obtuse!

After my neighbour yelled at the builder he apologised, went to the front and rang her doorbell, but she didn't open. She came out when she saw me and then started to scream at him at the top of her lungs the comments in my OP. Builder apologised, I apologised and then he stormed off.

As he was apologising over and over she also asked him if he had a wife or daughter and how he would feel if it happened to one of them.

So we have apologised. I will buy her an apology gift but I do think it was a massive over-reaction on both their parts. I am worried about how things will be once I move back in.

yes understandmenow a dog or a fox is exactly the same as a grown-up man on your property in front of your windows, of course it is.

You're being deliberately obtuse!
Yes, that is clearly ME being obtuse Grin Grin

Homemadeandfromscratch · 10/06/2020 20:18

You'd be some sort of stupid

your quote, not mine Flowers

understandmenow · 10/06/2020 20:42

So @Homemadeandfromscratch you think a neighbour without a fence is reasonable? I think it shows total disrespect, irrational and antisocial behaviour.

You may enjoy living your life like that, but I would be fucked off being your neighbour.

But people like you exist and people like the OP have to deal with your batshittery!

Luckily I've not lived in the kind of downtown area like yours where no fences are "the norm"

Maybe try and move to an area where people have fences, it's really refreshing.

StoneofDestiny · 10/06/2020 21:10

Don't get the bit about the colour of the builder? I'm clearly missing something here 🙄

Homemadeandfromscratch · 10/06/2020 21:17

😂 😂 😂

I rarely genuinely laugh at something, but "not having a fence" shows total disrespect, irrational and antisocial behaviour? Brilliant

I would normally assume you are just being goady, but the completely misunderstanding about what the OP wrote shows that we have a special poster on.

Oh goody.

Homemadeandfromscratch · 10/06/2020 21:22

QuoteStoneofDestiny
The mixed-raced neighbour ranted that as non white she had to put up with men on her property, but if she had been white (and the man black) she could have involved he police.

Which was then translated by a poster as:
if the man had been black, the neighbour would have called the police
(exact quote has it been a black man, she would've informed the police?)

pretty much completely the opposite of what the OP wrote Grin

Maybe the poster's first language is not English, so it's easy to misunderstand.

Crunchymum · 10/06/2020 21:34

So your builder is black and quit because of her racist behaviour?

StoneofDestiny · 11/06/2020 07:59

Still lost 🙄. Not sure why being mixed race gets more men on to her property - or why she has to tolerate it because of her racial heritage.
It’s an odd story.
