How much difference will 2 stones make?

Can I just ask you for your opinion - how much of a difference will a 2 stone weight loss make?

I’m 11 stones and want to get to 9 stones.

If you're smaller, the difference will be even bigger because the difference between sizes gets bigger the bigger you are. In Next, I think, there's a 3 inch difference between 20 and 18, but 1-2 inch between the other sizes.

Thanks for posting this that clears it up for me! I went from a size 20 to a size 18 and I lost 3 stone! So it makes sense now why I only lost one dress size, nice to know it’s smaller between the other sizes so shouldn’t take as long to go down sizes now.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 11/06/2020 13:36

This is such a motivating thread! Thank you. Really got to get control of the snacking and lose those two stone!

Geekster1963 · 11/06/2020 14:39

I think it partly depends on how tall you are and how much you weigh to start with. Though losing two stones will make some difference no matter what (unless it would make you underweight).

I lost two stones a few years ago and it made a big difference I’m only short at 4ft 11 and the two stones I lost was 20% of my weight.

PowerslidePanda · 11/06/2020 21:12

@wowfudge Done - thanks for the suggestion! The measurements were larger than I was expecting - reminded me that even though I've lost a lot, I am still overweight and need to keep going for that reason too.

I get my exercise through aerobics and had been thinking about adding wrist weights, so interesting to know that weights have made a difference for your arms.

wowfudge · 11/06/2020 21:27

I've got really into weight training Panda - it's interval training with weights so quite intense. Whole body workouts that vary. I am always a sweaty mess by the end. The key thing with weights is doing each exercise in good form, although over time you would look to progress to heavier weights. There have been bicep and tricep exercises and shoulder ones too. Some use your bodyweight rather than weights. I can do bicep curls and shoulder presses with 5kg dumbbells, other exercises with less, sometimes a lot less. Have a look for an arms workout on YouTube.

Fatted · 11/06/2020 21:29

It will make a big difference to your appearance.

I can tell you now though that losing it will do nothing to improve your sense of self value and worth

wowfudge · 11/06/2020 22:16

Eh? Why such a negative comment Fatted? I feel like I've got myself back, my confidence and self esteem have increased.

Eckhart · 11/06/2020 22:19

@Fatted Many people experience improved self esteem with weight loss. Why do you think OP will be different?

evilharpy · 12/06/2020 13:42

@fatted why do you think that? I gained a lot of weight during and after pregnancy and felt awful, my self esteem plummeted, I hated having to go anywhere that required me to dress up because I was so uncomfortable in my own skin - I didn't much want to go out at all and tended to hide at home. When I lost the weight my self esteem was much better and I was generally a happier person, and also a lot more confident at work leading meetings and challenging opinions.

I've gained a bit of weight lately as I said earlier in the thread through injury and bad habits earlier in lockdown (about a dress size) and I don't feel like myself at all. I know when I get rid of it I'll feel more confident again.

notheragain4 · 12/06/2020 13:50

A huuuuge difference

A couple years ago I was 11st at 5ft5, I lost about 20lb and I went from a 12/14 to an 8. I looked sooo much better, the main difference was my face. 11st is technically over weight at 5ft 3 (and my height too)

I'm speaking in past tense as I am back to 10st ish now, but I still look better because the weight hasn't gone back to my face. I am also still in the healthy range and I think that shows, I would like to lose 7lbs though.

notheragain4 · 12/06/2020 13:53

And I have to disagree with @fatted, I felt much better about myself inside and out because being 11stone made me miserable, I'd lost control, I felt unhealthy and guilty for that. Losing the weight gave me back control and I liked myself for it, not just because of the look but how I felt about myself.

The reason I want to lose 7lb again is to feel better mostly in myself rather than how I look, size 12 looks fine, but size 10 feels better as far as I'm concerned (for me). Plus it generally means I am eating better which in itself makes you feel better.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/06/2020 14:00

For me a stone would be one dress size

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/06/2020 14:01

Sorry for being thick just saw u said 2 stones. So yeah 2 dress sizes.

PumpkinP · 12/06/2020 17:19

Also disagree with fatted I’ve lost 3 stone and I’m so much more confident and happier now.

listsandbudgets · 12/06/2020 17:23

Huge.

A packet of butter weighs about half a pound - Imagine carrying 56 packets of butter around all the time.

wowfudge · 13/06/2020 07:50

Well I feel much better for having got rid of the 40 I was carrying around.

Bagelsandbrie · 13/06/2020 07:58

I guess it depends what’s important to you. I’m 2 stone overweight. I’ve been very slim before. Sure I liked the way I looked when I was slimmer but not enough to stop eating cakes and chocolate in all honesty. My overall fitness is the same either way, in fact I am more active now I am heavier (I have started running and lead a very active life, most of my weight is due to long term medication). For me 2 stone makes no difference at all really. It doesn’t motivate me to lose it.

Beautiful3 · 13/06/2020 20:45

@listsandbudgets, wow that's an amazing visual! I'm currently dieting and have put off the weighing scales, in case I've only lost a few pounds. But my word, when you compare it to packs of butter that's amazing!

Scruffyoak · 13/06/2020 20:46

I was 11 stone on January. Now 9st 11...went down to 9st 5 but put it on again on lockdown. Want to be down to 8st 10.

AgeLikeWine · 13/06/2020 20:50

Massive. Two stone is 28lb, or 12.7 kg. If you buy 6x2l & 1x500ml bottles of water, put them in a rucksack & carry it round for a few hours, then take it off, that’s how much difference it will make.

Ginandtonic3 · 14/06/2020 12:53

Thank you everyone. I know it will make a difference to my appearance and definitely with how I’m feeling about myself. I have put weight on over the years, I’ve actually put on 3 stones. It’s been a tough 5 years or so. I’ll be happy even if I lose half a stone. My goal is 2 stones.

I’m finding it hard to get motivated. Hearing people’s responses on here has helped to some extent but I still find it hard limiting how much I eat. I do eat out of boredom and feeling low about myself which is very unproductive as I end up feeling even worse about myself after eating! Thank you again for the lovely comments. If anyone has experience of beating comfort/emotional eating please tell us the secret

OP posts:
RandomMess · 14/06/2020 17:51

I have to keep busy to stave off the boredom!

I've got a jigsaw on the go and am just doing more cleaning and tidying.

Can you just not buy the biscuits, crisps, chocolate etc? I honestly find a bit of a detox from all the sugary stuff does make a big difference I just stop craving it. We always have fruit in to snack on instead.

What are your main weaknesses food wise?

overweightcat · 15/06/2020 11:26

@Ginandtonic3 MFP helped me lots. Once I realised if I had a square of chocolate or handful of the DCs cereal as I was getting it for them I had to log it and all those calories started adding up it gave me a shock.

Once the weight starts coming off you will feel more motivated to carry on too.

And I second pp who said about keeping busy, I'm very much an emotional eater and if I'm upset or angry/frustrated I find myself absentmindedly heading for the snack cupboard so I get where you are coming from. I have to be very deliberate and conscious of what I'm doing I've even found myself pick up a packet of crisps, take it to the lounge with me and just have a stare down whilst trying to remind myself that I'm not even hungry and certainly don't need crisps and put it back in the cupboard - it sounds really silly but it's given me a new sort of drive to realise that I can take a moment and actually muster up enough control to put it back.

I'm a stone down since late April and the difference is already huge - maybe not for everyone but definitely for myself personally, I can look at pictures of myself without cringing.

It's taken 7 years of false starts and not really committing as the weight crept up so if I can do it I genuinely believe anyone can!
Good luck!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 15/06/2020 15:47

@overweightcat that’s a great post, and I’m sure it’ll resonate with lots of us - especially during lockdown.

This thread is so encouraging. I always wanted to lose about 3 stone to get down to my weight if early 20s, but now realise that a more realistic 2 stone (I’m 5ft5 and 12 stone) will make all the difference and the last half a stone or so can wait until I’m getting more sleep!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 15/06/2020 15:48

^get down to the weight I was in my early 20s, I mean!
