Are expensive hair straighteners worth it?

Mine were about £30. I've never been very impressed with that but now that my hair is so much longer it's starting to get on my nerves. Are fancy straighteners really worth it?

'Strong'.

FairfaxAikman · 09/06/2020 17:00

I couldn't afford GHDs so got Babyliss 230s and found they were far superior than my hairdressers GHDs on my very thick hair. And I'm told GHd quality has declined since I bought my 230s 10 years ago

2beautifulbabs · 09/06/2020 17:02

GHDs are the best I've had mine now for 12 years now and they are still going strong.

OffToSingapore · 09/06/2020 17:02

Yes they’re definitely worth it for me, but then I have very thick, coarse hair and I need good straighteners. I’m sure cheap straighteners would work perfectly well for most people though.

My Cloud 9s were about £100 and I’ve had them for 5 or 6 years. I straighten my hair every day, so that works out at £1.50 a month or 5p a day so far (and they’re still going strong). They were absolutely a good investment for me.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 09/06/2020 17:03

My ex bought me my God's and we split up in 2009...they are still going strong so yes a lot to pay out at once but so far works out at a tenner a year - can't compare to cheaper ones but they haven't needed replacing, touch wood!

WindsorBlues · 09/06/2020 17:05

Pre lock down I used my GHDs twice a day, so well worth the ££ we also have a local repair shop that services/repairs them for £10, gaurenteed for a year. I've left mine in once or twice during the years and they always come back in perfect working condition.

If your buying GHD stay away from the special edition versions, I've had a few over the years and they're crap I always end up just going back and using the bog standard version I got 14 years ago.

3catsandcounting · 09/06/2020 17:06

I have very thick, wavy and unruly hair. I had GHDs for years but when the last pair stopped working I changed to Cloud 9.
My hair's been so much better since.
It seems to take less time and produce sleeker results.

PepperPott · 09/06/2020 17:06

I had GHDs and they were amazing. They finally gave up the ghost and I replaced them but the new ones aren’t nearly as good as the old ones.

However, I find blow drying straight and then going over with straighteners makes it a lot sleeker and shiner.

WinnieWonder · 09/06/2020 17:08

I got fyno straighteners off amazon. They are great.
My hair so think and frizzy though. Straighteners other people consider good mightnt impress me!

HollySideEyes · 09/06/2020 17:09

Should add my second GHDs were the wide ones which are a godsend if you have long thick hair that you want to straighten.

WinnieWonder · 09/06/2020 17:09

FyMo i mean

BeeB29 · 09/06/2020 17:11

Well I have Remingtons. I treated myself to GHD’s. I actually prefer my remingtons 😬 don’t think ghds are as good as they used to be.

WinnieWonder · 09/06/2020 17:13

As you see this is a row of straightners on a hsirbrish shape. Works so well.took ages to arrive but best syraightners ive ever had

Are expensive hair straighteners worth it?
Iamclearlyamug · 09/06/2020 17:14

I bought Remington silk straighteners to replace my GHDs which were stolen, and actually I like them much better. Go up to 235 degrees which is great for my incredibly thick frizzy hair. Sadly I think they’ve been discontinued which is annoying as I’ve never found another straightener with a top temperature that high, they were only 45 quid too

HaveYouSeenMyBones · 09/06/2020 17:14

I always had GHDs but last time bought Cloud9s and love them. Would only buy them now, I think.

HaveYouSeenMyBones · 09/06/2020 17:16

P.s. I also think GHDs are not as good as they used to be. Too cool now.

SaladSeason · 09/06/2020 17:18

I have fine straight hair. I use wide GHDs to curl it. They are great and better than any other hair styler I've ever had. I've had them for 8 years now and I've dropped them twice on a stone floor and had to glue them back together. Still going strong and I'd replace like for like without any hesitation.

leolion1 · 09/06/2020 17:21

Beware of people recommending GHD who have had them for 10+ years, those sort aren't manufactured by GHD anymore and the newer versions are cheaply made. The original GHD are now made by Cloud 9 so go for those.

Acidrain · 09/06/2020 17:22

I have really thick curly hairband cloud 9s are the only ones that straighten it. So i think its worth it, although dont syraighten ny hair much anymore!

sunglasses123 · 09/06/2020 17:25

GHD's for me too. Have had cheaper ones but they really arent as good. I have a Dyson hair dryer. Whilst it looks great its definitely not worth the £££. Parlux for me. I use the Dyson every day because I feel I have to but its really not worth the money.

If you are thinking of buying the Dyson straightners do buy where you can try before you buy. I wish I had for the Dyson hairdryer.

Hoggleludo · 09/06/2020 17:26

Ghd

1000%.

Mind you. I brought mine maybe 15 years ago? So I've not tried any others. But mine still going strong.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 09/06/2020 17:28

I think so, but as always it would depend on the 2 pairs of straighteners in question and your individual hair type.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/06/2020 17:34

Older GHDs were better but had a tendency to explode.... New ones aren't as good, I think they reduced temp to stop them blowing up but the result is they are less effective.

Haven't tried cloud 9 but everyone recommends them.

ChilliCheese123 · 09/06/2020 17:38

It depends on your hair. Some of my friends use basic £20 ones you can get in Tesco but they don’t touch my hair it doesn’t look any different. I have to use either GHDs or Cloud 9 on mine. Since I was 13 though I’ve only had two pairs! My first pair I got them are still working ! You can get GHDs repaired which is really good. The older black and yellow GHDs are better though as they get hotter.

ChilliCheese123 · 09/06/2020 17:38

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland haha I’ve basically said exactly the same thing as you Grin
