Are expensive hair straighteners worth it?

Mine were about £30. I've never been very impressed with that but now that my hair is so much longer it's starting to get on my nerves. Are fancy straighteners really worth it?

Yes GHD all the way, I’ve had mine for nearly ten years and they’re still going strong. Tried many others before but it’s a false economy because they’re just not in the same league.

Bananacloud · 09/06/2020 16:19

Not sure to be honest. Only way to find out is to buy some. Search “best hair straighteners” on google and see what you get.

Ponoka7 · 09/06/2020 16:19

I had GHDs, couldn't afford to replace them and got remington shine ones, they are as good. I use my DD's GHDs occasionally and don't see the difference.

Ponoka7 · 09/06/2020 16:20

I've had my remingtons for at least six years now.

lymphopenia · 09/06/2020 16:20

Cheap ones didn't straighten my hair! My GHDs are 12 years old and are worth every penny. Definitely worth the investment

chipsandpeas · 09/06/2020 16:20

depends on your hair imo
my hair is pretty straight and £30 straightners do the job for me - my friends hair is a lot thicker and curlier and swears by cloud 9 straightners - ive used them and they dont do any better job for my hair but a big difference for hers

nutellalove · 09/06/2020 16:23

My GHDs lasted me 13 years before I had to replace them! And gives a way better finish than the cheaper brands in my opinion. I do have thick, curly hair though.

amusedtodeath1 · 09/06/2020 16:27

Remington all the way here. I've never really thought there was any difference between them and a more expensive brand.

ChessieFL · 09/06/2020 16:29

I always thought that expensive ones couldn’t be that much better, but I love my Cloud 9s and won’t ever go back to cheaper ones now.

tass1960 · 09/06/2020 16:31

Have used GHD's for years but I am converted to Cloud 9 and would highly recommend.

Greysofa · 09/06/2020 16:33

Has anyone changed from GHD’s to Cloud Nines? My GHD’s are on their last legs and will need replacing soon, it I keep reading about the Cloud Nines being better? I have extremely thick, wavy hair.

Thighmageddon · 09/06/2020 16:33

I bought someCloud Nines from a recommendation on here a few weeks ago, they are so much better than GHDs which I leant to dd and she's now holding them hostage.

snowybean · 09/06/2020 16:35

I really want the Dyson ones but I can't bring myself to spend £400 on hair straighteners 😅

LuckyAmy1986 · 09/06/2020 16:36

I’m glad I saw this thread as my faithful GHDs are on the way out, I hadn’t heard of Cloud Nines.
But in answer to the OP I definitely think the more expensive ones are worth it.

mencken · 09/06/2020 16:37

frizzball on legs here, 10 months out from my annual straightening session and probably 10 months from the next one..

hairdresser talked me into GHDs at around £90. They do work, although not as well because they don't get as hot as the cheaper makes. But that means they don't wreck your hair as much. I seem quite swishy and shiny today, at least from the front. The back is probably still a bit fuzzy, but I get bored if it takes longer than five minutes to do.

Anotherchangeanothername · 09/06/2020 16:37

GHD all the way! Lasts 11 years and still going strong

WhatASadLittleLifeJane · 09/06/2020 16:38

I have had my GHDs for 13 years and they're still just as good as the day I got them!

Thighmageddon · 09/06/2020 16:44

The newer GHDs aren't as good hence me buying cloud 9s rather than more GHDs. You can make them hotter as well.

imarocketman50 · 09/06/2020 16:50

Cloud 9s are made by the person who invented ghd. I've had my God's for about 12 years and they are worth every penny. But my hairdresser did recommend cloud 9s to me if I ever need a replacement.

hellsbellsmelons · 09/06/2020 16:52

I had GHDs for years.
They were good.
They aren't any more.
I have Remington Keratin straighteners and they are brilliant.
In fact, my DD steals them to use as her GHDs aren't as good as these!
I think they are around £45 which is acceptable to me.
I have very thick curly hair so I don't straighten very often.
I love my Babyliss big hair though. I rarely use straighteners now as this works really well and leaves volume!

shoppingshenanigans · 09/06/2020 16:55

Definitely not imo. I've always had GHD's. I've had about 3 pairs now over the years (been gifted to me, I would never buy them myself) and there not very good. I bought my mum some Babyliss ones a few years ago for Xmas, I think around £30. They are miles better so I bought a pair for myself and hardly use my GHD's now.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 09/06/2020 16:57

Definitely GHDs. I've been using them since I was 18 (so 12 years now) and have had 2 sets in that time. Worth the money in my opinion. I curl and straighten my hair with mine so I don't ever need other tools.

shoppingshenanigans · 09/06/2020 16:57

These are the ones I have OP. I think their very good.

ToothFairyNemesis · 09/06/2020 16:57

@Greysofa yes I have cloud nine, I have very thick long hair and they work really well.

2 GHDs in 20 yrs and the only reason the first broke is because my clumsy fool of an ex-H stood his whole 6 foot 13 stone weight on them. The second ones are still going string. hTH Smile.
