Someone tell me something positive and good? Quick... I really need it today.

It’s Monday and today I’ve heard:

  • a friend is being made redundant due to covid (joins a long list of people I know in same boat)
  • seen pictures of the Churchill statue and the words written on it. My dh also told me what “acab” stands for... I just cannot believe that British police are being treated so badly.
  • We are not allowed to use the word “woman” anymore. It’s offensive to trans community. The whole jk Rowling thing makes me want to weep as it’s her opinion and it’s hardly a controversial one... the use of the word “woman”
  • being told I’m part of the problem because I didn’t change my square on insta to a black square... I’m not doing enough apparently. Reading about celebs on insta that did just that but have had old tweets from a few years dragged up that are racist beyond belief... I won’t name names but there’s one famous insta person who I have unfollowed due to her past behaviour.

I honestly think we’ve all lost the plot.... and if a meteor wipes us all out it would be a blessing.

Oh come on, you want the human race to be wiped out? Bit of an overreaction.

oprahfan · 08/06/2020 14:52

@Lockdowner13
I hear ya.
What good does a black frigging square do on your insta?
Doesn’t help the situation one little bit.
I did set up a direct debit to the Stephen Lawrence charitable trust though, they’ll be getting a donation from me every month to help them get others to where they need to be.
Whoever told you that you are part of the problem are complete arseholes.

Something nice? Coming home from work today....a deer was running beside me in the field, gorgeous to see.
Popped into the Co op to get bread and milk, the guy serving I hadn’t seen for ages, he gave me 10% discount on my stuff for being a key worker. Bless him!
And if it counts, yesterday, I was watching dolphins by the harbour. Mum and baby too.

Life is utter bollocks right now. Some aspects of humanity could do with being wiped out, absolutely. Some days I’m fine, a lot of days I cry. That’s how it is.
Take care x

runrunrunrunt · 08/06/2020 15:09

Churchill was a racist to be fair.

What does Acab stand for?

Cam2020 · 08/06/2020 15:12

I'm with you. Sick of it all.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 08/06/2020 15:12

ACAB - All Coppers Are Bastards

RunRunRunAway · 08/06/2020 15:16

@runrunrunrunt Biscuit

HellSmith · 08/06/2020 15:17

I didn't have to queue once today, & people seemed more settled. This at one time would've been the norm, these days it's a bloody miracle. So I'm hanging on in there to plan, & book, that one last holiday, before the world ends.

Redolent · 08/06/2020 15:18

The fact that feminist issues are a key priority in your mind but not those of race does imply that there is more work you need to do...

That’s not to negate the fact that the black square is just nonsense.

bigchris · 08/06/2020 15:20

Cheerful thing - pub gardens might open on 22 June

Footies coming back

The sun just came out from behind a cloud here

Pinkblueberry · 08/06/2020 15:21

If you think all that’s reason enough for the world to come to an end then perhaps it’s you that’s losing the plot...

Redolent · 08/06/2020 15:22

These words from The Independent make sense:

“ He was a racist, but also anti-fascist; he was fiercely anti-communist, yet carved Europe up and gifted much of it to Joseph Stalin.

Many historians have tried to make sense of the man and his times. “Churchill was a racist” is part of the truth about the man, but only a part of it.”

Pinkblueberry · 08/06/2020 15:22

Apart from what’s happened to your friend, it sounds like you’re just getting a bit of negative information overload from your phone. Put it down and go out for a walk.

oprahfan · 08/06/2020 15:23

@Redolent
How would you know what priorities are in the mind of @Lockdowner13?
I’m very interested to know.

SnuggyBuggy · 08/06/2020 15:24

The level of virtue signalling we are expected to do to not "be part of the problem" is daft

Takes the erosion of womanhood very seriously (an understandable concern) but is distressed by the labelling of Churchill as a racist. It’s all in the post.

White feminism comes to mind.

KaTetof19 · 08/06/2020 15:48

@RunRunRunAway not sure why that deserves a biscuit. Churchill was a racist, history confirms this. He was a pretty horrible man full stop, especially when Home Home Secretary. However his leadership during WW2 was exactly what the country needed and he deserves the plaudits now bestowed upon him. It's really important not to hide his lesser traits, therein lies revisionist history (1984!) and a murky path for the future. This does not mean that vandalising his statue was acceptable.

missyoumuch · 08/06/2020 15:51

I’d think violent racism at the hands of the state makes one more upset about the future of humanity than a statue. But that’s just me.

zoemum2006 · 08/06/2020 16:03

I probably sound like a conspiracy theorist but I think the social media has been horribly infected by 'contrarians' whose entire purpose is to agitate and cause division amongst people (Facebook especially).

It's beneficial to powerful people to have us at each other's throats. Divide and rule has been about for a long time. (Also.. put people in a culture war camp and you can made them side with you on other things).

I try to remember that most of us do want the same things but conflict is purposefully being stoked and it's not our fault (I do wish people would be a bit more critically minded though....)

BeyondMyWits · 08/06/2020 16:07

Something nice - New Zealand have had no new covid cases for 17 days.

Orangeblossom78 · 08/06/2020 16:11

Add to this the hysteria and shaming or people, being angry with people not clapping etc during this time, I agree. I feel like I am losing faith in people in general and dislike what society has become.

Orangeblossom78 · 08/06/2020 16:12

Oh and New Zealand going on about how fab they have been getting rid of Covid. they are an island, they basically have a rural population, much less pollution density and just locked down like everyone else - fed up hearing about that too.

Lockdowner13 · 08/06/2020 16:12

It’s the whole thing with black lives matters that is upsetting me.

I heard on the news today someone say “the media are portraying the protests as violent when actually most of them were peaceful”

I spin it around.... most police officers are nice and want to help people. They don’t deserve the treatment they are getting. Especially ones in the uk.

I’m lost I really am. It feels like it’s no longer enough to accept people for who they are and educate myself and my kids to make us better people. It’s all about... admitting that because I’m white I am privileged. It’s all about squares on insta. It’s all about NOT asking anyone’s opinion because it’s not their job to educate you. It’s all about apologising for something that happened 100s years ago. It’s all about public declarations on social media even. I feel guilty even though I know I am a decent human being. I was disgusted by the murder and believe those responsible need to be punished.

I just feel like there is so much hatred in the world. And it’s depressing.

As a white female, I’m passionate about the jk Rowling stuff. I guess because I don’t want the word “woman” to disappear! For anyone... myself, my children and black women too! They are completely separate issues. And both completely bonkers in my opinion.

OP posts:
missyoumuch · 08/06/2020 16:26

You’re still more worried about “hatred” against police than racism. Sorry it’s so “upsetting” to you for non white woman issues to be front and centre for two weeks.

The80sweregreat · 08/06/2020 16:30

Whatever Churchill was or wasnt doesn't take away the fact that his words and inspiration helped many get through the war years. He was a strong leader for dark times. He was soon voted out after the war.
I wasn't aware of his past as we were not taught any of that in History classes.
My nan used to call him a war monger.

I'm ashamed if he was a racist and sad I wasn't aware of it until very recently but if things are airbrushed away like this then we will never know the truth.
It's tainted my knowledge of him to be honest but you live and learn and it wasn't on my radar until now for me to know all this.
Maybe history lessons should start to tell the truth more.

Lockdowner13 · 08/06/2020 16:42

I’m cross that George was murdered and I’m cross that police officers and horses have been hurt. I won’t rank them in order of how upsetting they are to make you happy. It’s all totally shit and that really should be enough for you to realise that I’m not a terrible human and that I care about people.
