Someone tell me something positive and good? Quick... I really need it today.

It’s Monday and today I’ve heard:

  • a friend is being made redundant due to covid (joins a long list of people I know in same boat)
  • seen pictures of the Churchill statue and the words written on it. My dh also told me what “acab” stands for... I just cannot believe that British police are being treated so badly.
  • We are not allowed to use the word “woman” anymore. It’s offensive to trans community. The whole jk Rowling thing makes me want to weep as it’s her opinion and it’s hardly a controversial one... the use of the word “woman”
  • being told I’m part of the problem because I didn’t change my square on insta to a black square... I’m not doing enough apparently. Reading about celebs on insta that did just that but have had old tweets from a few years dragged up that are racist beyond belief... I won’t name names but there’s one famous insta person who I have unfollowed due to her past behaviour.

I honestly think we’ve all lost the plot.... and if a meteor wipes us all out it would be a blessing.

fed up hearing about that too.

Why though?

Sure, they had an easier hand dealt than anyone else and I’m sure they wouldn’t deny that.

But the fact that they have no Covid cases is unambiguously good news and gives everyone hope that containment can be achieved.

Churchill was both an inspiring war hero and very racist in his views.

Different times back then.

People need to engage with complexity. The world isn’t full of easy answers.

bumblingbovine49 · 08/06/2020 16:59

Chuchill.was unpopular with a lot of people during the war. We ended up on the winning side so a lot of his incredibly unpopular decisions at the time are viewed through that lens.

As for ACAB. It isn't great but hardly something to make.you despair. Lots of people dislike the police. They are usually people who mistrust authority which is a significant part of the population. I am sure the police are used to this and it will be like water off a ducks back. The police do an important job and should be supported but there is no getting away from the fact that they are in a position of quite a lot of power so with that comes a great deal of responsibility and accountability which is as it should be.

I know the world is having a tough time at the moment but before Covid , there was apt of evidence that the world generally is becoming a safer and less violent place than it was on the past. Yes really!!
Even given all the things happening now, there are not many other times in history that I'd prefer to be living right now.

Yes people can be crap but overall I have faith we will do ok and solve most of our issues eventually.

As for NZ they acted earlier and were lucky not to have many infections early like Italy did but they definitely did a good job and I wish I lived there now Grin

fed up hearing about that too

some people can find misery from the brightest spark of hope.

Slothsarecreepy · 08/06/2020 18:54

It's not that people don't think it's great that NZ is CV free, it's that some people keep using it as an example of just how shit the UK is, without recognising they are completely different.

mrsBtheparker · 08/06/2020 22:36

Churchill was a racist to be fair.

Pity he didn't leave the c ountry to the Nazis, then you would be really free to protest as an excuse for mindless vandalism.

Caselgarcia · 08/06/2020 22:46

Don't despair OP, there is plenty of good in the world if you look for it. My advice would be treat everyone as you want to be treated yourself and you can't go far wrong. And stay off social media.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 08/06/2020 23:39

Today 15:24SnuggyBuggy

The level of virtue signalling we are expected to do to not "be part of the problem" is daft

Agreed.

pippitypoppitypoo · 08/06/2020 23:48

It sounds that you need to toughen up, quite frankly! You seem upset that there are people in the world with opposing views to you. Imagine - perish the thought- that if you'd sufferered discrimination or unfair treatment at the hands of the police- you might actually have a different viewpoint? Perhaps? Maybe it's time to educate yourself instead of chucking your judgement around. Smh Hmm

janeskettle · 09/06/2020 00:54

White feminism

The only oppressed group that don't share an oppression with men. No wonder they're good to use as a punching bag. Just wimmin, innit?

OP, I have minimised social media over this weekend, and am listening to podcasts instead. Has helped with mood. Take a SM break, and find small, good things to focus on. I like to sit out and listen to the the birds. Not going to change the world, but changing with the world can't happen from a place of disconnection and dissatisfaction with the world.

ilovesooty · 09/06/2020 01:15

I'd step away from the news and social media for a bit if it's tainting your life so much at the moment.

Cactusmum · 09/06/2020 05:10

@Lockdowner13 I feel you. Ive decided i no longer want to be human and I want to be a cat.

But what I am doing is taking care of what me, my husband and my children need each day and doing what is best for our mental and emotional and physical health in the situation we are in with school, work and health. . :-) That is my priority and nobody can tell me otherwise.

user1972548274 · 09/06/2020 05:41

most police officers are nice and want to help people

Meh. Those same officers also close ranks to protect the ones who do harm to people. That makes them as bad - they are tasked with having the courage and integrity to protect the vulnerable but choose to protect those causing harm instead.

metalkprettyoneday · 09/06/2020 06:15

I understand . Things feel pretty dark but I would say take a break from Instagram etc. You can’t help other people unless you look after yourself first. Focus on the small things you can change .Focus on doing a little good in the world by helping someone that needs it. I find this helps me feel better and less hopeless.
