How do you pronounce Gouda?

Gooda (YABU) or Gowda (YANBU)?

(If you're Dutch speaking and can say it properly properly, then I'm sorry, but you'll just have to shake your head and write a comment. Or silently move on whilst despairing of how English speakers mangle the names of your cheeses, artists and doubtless anything else we come across.)

Goo-dah.

Otherwise the joke doesn't work. What does the cheese say when he looks in the mirror?

Halloumi, Looking Gouda!

dementedpixie · 06/06/2020 22:06

Gooda

Classiccar · 06/06/2020 22:07

VodselForDinner · 06/06/2020 22:08

DontStandSoCloseToMe · 06/06/2020 22:08

I say Gowda though....

Abbccc · 06/06/2020 22:09

I thought it was a bit like "schow-da".

HappyHammy · 06/06/2020 22:09

Gow da

greathat · 06/06/2020 22:09

Was going to say it's more Howda. With a chokey noise :D

GrouchyKiwi · 06/06/2020 22:09

Lotsofphlegm-how-da.

vdbfamily · 06/06/2020 22:09

Howda is how by German husband says it.

Abbccc · 06/06/2020 22:10

Throaty kind of schow or schau and then da.

Isthisfinallyit · 06/06/2020 22:10

Shaking head

Isthisfinallyit · 06/06/2020 22:11

Lotsofphlegm-how-da.

This sounds almost correct

LimpidPools · 06/06/2020 22:13

Still a bit gutted I didn't 'accidentally' put this in baby names.

I do actually know how to say it in Dutch. (In theory, if not in practice.) What I really want to know is how other people say it in English, iyswim.

Because it seems I'm saying it differently to most people I know and I was surprised!

I speak Dutch and say gow-da... mostly because if you say it with a hard G in the UK people think you’re choking Grin

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 06/06/2020 22:17

I think most people say goo-da though, that’s the pronunciation I hear the most

DartmoorChef · 06/06/2020 22:18

Gow dah

UnderCaffeinated · 06/06/2020 22:18

@Isthisfinallyit

Lotsofphlegm-how-da.

This sounds almost correct

I love this, really made me laugh.

The right way to say it in English would be gow-da. That's also how you'd say the name of the place in English too.

Nottherealslimshady · 06/06/2020 22:19

Gooda as in boo

AdaColeman · 06/06/2020 22:20

It’s got quite a gutteral gh sound.
Maybe you should start eating Edam instead? Grin

Bertucci · 06/06/2020 22:21

Ghow-da

Euclid · 06/06/2020 22:23

In my local excellent cheese shop a Dutch man came in and asked for something that nobody in the queue understood but fortunately the shop owner did. It sounded like "old cow" but was of course Gouda.
I agree with @undwrcaffeinated about he lots of phlegm. I have asked Dutch friends to say it and that is how it sounds.

DorisDances · 06/06/2020 22:23

Hoo-da
