Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?

Skiing.

Madhatterhouse · 07/06/2020 01:11

My husband has a much more liberal attitude to spending than me, I’m pretty puritanical about money so feel guilty for indulging. We spend an insane amount on holidays, away most months with a couple of long haul trips in first class per year. Apart from that, hair and nail treatments for both of us, husband’s golf club membership, our cleaner, living in the most expensive bit of London.

Lockdown has definitely made me rethink our life totally, I don’t really miss any of those things. What I do miss is walking/other outdoor pursuits, so we will be moving out of the city to somewhere rural as soon as we can.

My glasses. I have 2 pairs and one prescription sunnies. Desperate to buy a couple more. They are from hard to find designer brands with Japanese lenses. I am badly shortsighted and these lenses are so thin they fit the frames perfectly. Around £1k each.
Skincare but more of a geeky collection eg lots of French and Kbeauty.
Hair. Maintaining the colour every 5 weeks.
Food.

Nixen · 07/06/2020 01:16

Travel
Food
I have a membership to an amazing spa

Food is the only one of those I can enjoy right now so I’m getting fat 🤦🏼‍♀️

LevoMental · 07/06/2020 01:28

Decent coffee from local roastery
Organic milk from farm just outside my town. Twice the price of a pint from supermarket but 100x nicer to drink, comes in glass bottles and delivered to the door twice a week.

thaegumathteth · 07/06/2020 01:44

Pre Covid it would have been holidays and also various extra curricular things for the kids like riding lessons, fencing, football, golf, dance etc.

Now I'm just counting our blessings we are in a relatively stable financial position and not having to worry (yet?) about putting food on the table and paying the mortgage.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 07/06/2020 01:50

Second home situated in the Canadian Rockies.

TazSyd · 07/06/2020 01:51

Used to be holidays and getting my brows and lashes professionally done. At the moment I just treat myself to a good quality bottle of wine once a week (drink half on Friday and half on Saturday).

TheAdhesiveDuckDeficiency · 07/06/2020 03:50

My horses. Thankfully only paying for the one (far nicer and more able than I’ll never need) horse right now as my other is loaned out. I could easily have afforded to buy a house with the money I’ve spend (livery is more than my rent...) but they keep me sane and happy so I just keep forking out money on farrier, vet, livery, equipment, competitions, massage/chiro, lessons etc.

I think all us horse people are drawn to these threads hoping others will have a hobby/other luxury as expensive and all consuming as ours so we can feel better about all the money that gets spent on the 🐴...

Bloodybridget · 07/06/2020 04:13

I'm loving reading all the posts from horse owners! I don't think I do anything particularly extravagant (but it's all about perspective, isn't it?), but I have paid a lot for second hand children's books, £100 for one. Still delighted to have it.

squeekums · 07/06/2020 04:17

I've never been a yachtsman but have several friends who are.
The tell me that owning a boat is; "Like standing in a cold shower tearing up twenty-pound notes

Dp has a boat, they mean 100s I'm sure of it.
We just found out that dp boat needs either a 30k new motor, that includes installation I believe, I hope
Or around 15 for a 2nd hand one.
It started as a $1500 service
BOAT - Break Out Another Thousand.......... or 10

For me it's travel, live sports and events/theme park thrill rides.
I love WWE, me and dp been twice now when it comes to aus. The last one was front row plus meet n greet
My footy membership

Nandocushion · 07/06/2020 04:17

Travel, holidays. We go long-haul several times a year and often premium/business/1st (usually on points).

1forAll74 · 07/06/2020 04:33

As I have moved house quite a few times over the years, my main passion was for gardening, and landscaping various gardens, so quite expensive at times, and nice results afterwards. I am a bit of a cheapskate otherwise. Would not spend big money on Gyms, eating at fancy places, jewellery and clothes etc.

BusterGonad · 07/06/2020 05:58

We travel a lot, every school holiday we are off somewhere, not recently obviously, so I've indulged in much needed clothes and some unneeded but much wanted make up purchases, expensive Japanese products. They've made me very happy and wearing my new jeans and tshirts have really made me feel a lot better about myself.

BadLad · 07/06/2020 06:07

Holidays, usually in really nice hotels.

Also flying, especially to tiny airports. Sometimes we take a weekend break in somewhere we wouldn't usually think of going to so we can check out a new airport. I love the whole process of flying

dottiedodah · 07/06/2020 06:57

SuperMumTum Not "sad" in the slightest! You have all you want and are content .Many people could learn a thing or two from your sensible post!(me included TBH!) Have used Lockdown to re appraise some aspects of our life .less car use.shopping for a start!

pollyskettles · 07/06/2020 07:36

Getting our shopping delivered.

Dinglethedragon · 07/06/2020 08:10

Hi @notheragain4 - yes, that’s the house I’ve got. I love it love it love it. Said they’d carry me out of here in a box..... but then husband of 25yrs met his “soulmate” and went.

I had my own career so could afford to keep running it, but what I don’t have are the resources to do is the serious maintenance that’s beginning to need doing.

If I sold up and downsized then I could help dc get on the property ladder, which is the sensible thing to do ..... but then I look at the Apple trees I planted 25yrs ago. 😪

heidbuttsupper · 07/06/2020 08:18

Eating out & hotels

weepingwillow22 · 07/06/2020 08:31

House - spending a fortune of doing it up and building a big extension

Other than that don't spend that much although love good food, coffee and gin.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/06/2020 08:33

I’ve been in the situation of having no money and relatives having to pay for my food shop so that the kids and I could eat so I consider the fact that I can go into any supermarket I fancy, choose whatever I want and not have to worry about my card being declined is pretty luxurious!

Same goes for the children, several years ago I was the lucky recipient of mumsnet Secret Santa gifts so they got presents from me that year. Nowadays I have the luxury of not worrying about how to finance Christmas and birthdays.

frogsarejumpy · 07/06/2020 08:57

**Amazingbouncingferret I’m similar. Mine is being able to spend £30 on plants to brighten up the garden when used to frantically checking bank accounts to check we can cover outgoings and food shopping.
This thread starkly shows the huge difference in how people live. I find it a bit depressing if I’m honest Blush

Bebbanburger · 07/06/2020 08:59

It was holidays. Only one or two a year but it was all I thought about.
It is actually freeing not to be planning anything or having the financial drain of paying for something every month.
Now there's nothing. Just food, wine, books and plants. It's nice.

Poniesandgin · 07/06/2020 09:01

It was my horse but she’s sold now Sad

Dogs would be the other thing I spend money on.

lissie123 · 07/06/2020 09:02

Gosh there are some quite wealthy posters on this thread. But all posts are lovely to read as I’m enjoying everyone’s perspective on lifestyle choices.
