Mulling this over as I look through job listings. I think for me it is enjoying fitness classes at different expensive studios, well pre covid it was. Not sure when we will be able to do that again! But I really enjoy it so much and it is definitely not an essential, I'm fortunate to be able to do so. We do live in an eye-wateringly expensive area so I guess that is partly a luxury, although we do need to live in this city for my partner's work.

What would you say is the most luxury aspect of your lifestyle?
@lissie123 haha yes I love the scale, from someone getting their nails done through to having a boat Grin
I don't think having a boat is anywhere near the top of the scale of indulgences on this thread actually. Well, it can be very expensive of course but it doesn't have to be. If you have a large, new boat in a fully serviced berth in a plush South Coast marina, pay people to maintain it and buy a new suit of sails every season then yes it will cost a fortune, but we have a smallish, old boat that was second hand when we bought it 25 years ago, that lives on a swinging mooring in the North of England and we do all the maintenance ourselves, largely with second hand parts or things DH makes himself.
Sorry, I know I am being over sensitive probably but I have had so much grief on this subject over the years. Most of my colleagues spend far more on a fortnight in the sun than we do on a year of sailing but I regularly get told we are extravagant and elitist in having a boat. I've never heard anyone say that to the myriad of people in my workplace who own caravans or motorhomes but the attitude is different if your caravan floats! I do consider sailing to be an indulgence as it is something non essential that we spend on simply because we enjoy it, but it is no more expensive than quite a lot of other hobbies and most of our sailing friends are middle income families who like pottering about rather than wealthy folk who race at Cowes Week.

While on holiday in California I felling love with a rather sad but lovely 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud , up for sale locally at a ridiculously low price. Started fine, no rust and it was RHD. Dealer confirmed shipping costs and I bought her on my credit card. Didn't tell DH until we were back in the UK. Luckily we have the ability to maintain her ourselves. She's now part of the family and a starring role in my DD wedding last year. Had to work a lot of weekends but worth it.

Starting to realise how much I treat myself having read this thread. Blush

By far our biggest expense is food however.

SlothRunner · 07/06/2020 16:25

Trainers 👟

Private school for 2 DC. We’d have an amazing lifestyle if it wasn’t for that!

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 07/06/2020 16:39

Holidays (I am really missing them)

wonkylegs · 07/06/2020 17:03

Garden / gardeners
We bought a house with 1.6 acres of garden & we have 2 gardeners for 10hours a month to help keep it under control - we still do loads but it just about makes it manageable with two FT jobs, kids etc.

GeraltOfRivia · 07/06/2020 17:04

We have an extra sports car just for fun

notheragain4 · 07/06/2020 17:06

@MrsAvocet I'm really sorry if I've caused offence, I was only joshing, to me having a boat sounds very luxurious no one I know has one I wouldn't have a clue of the expense, it was just humorous to me the vast difference in responses.

winterinmadeira · 07/06/2020 17:10

Holidays - nothing fancy but They keep me going through work and everything else.

GreenTeaMug · 07/06/2020 17:11

Not everyone who races at Cowes week is wealthy though. It is the full gamut.
Just saying! (DH has sailed a few times there and this is his wish to buy into a boat).

I thin though- for me- I do make choices. I am not interested in cars so have an old banger. Dh a few years back suggested I spenmd circa £8 k on a new car as I needed one. I spent about £5 k on a car and pout £3 k into our holiday account and took us to Lapland just before christmas. We would never have done it otherwise, but I did not want to spend x amount on a car that i simply would not appreciate. I love my little banger, and we loved our trip to lapland.

I like makig those choices tbh. I like squirreling money away into a special account for treats.

flirtygirl · 07/06/2020 17:13

Swiftier
Someone who doesn’t earn as much could just as easily say ‘we spend £X amount on a treat/holiday/whatever because we work hard and need to enjoy our downtime’.

Yes you are right they could say that. Sorry if I took it not as intended.

I've just read too many times on mumsnet similar to "but we work hard" implying that low wages are because a person does not work hard.

Mary46 · 07/06/2020 17:19

Sorry to hear about your horse x
My coffees and nice beauty treatments. I be cutting back as temping could b quiet now.

Purpleartichoke · 07/06/2020 17:20

I spend an obscene amount of money on restaurants and takeaways. I rarely prepare a meal for myself.

lazylinguist · 07/06/2020 17:24

My indulgences are fairly modest in terms of price really. Beautiful hand-dyed yarn to knit with (but I get through it pretty slowly - am not a speedy knitter ). Really good loose-leaf tea.

Franticbutterfly · 07/06/2020 17:34

A brand new BMW X2 that I only drive about 5 miles a week. Silly really.

raspberryk · 07/06/2020 17:42

Only on mumsnet is a 5k car a banger Grin - yes I know it is all relative.

Claricethecat45 · 07/06/2020 17:55

I too was a 'horse' indulger until 2 years ago; I had owned horses for 30 years and lucky to have them 'at home' and even put them into posh livery for training and lessons and also when we went on hols; I couldn't imagine life any differently and they were a huge expense even being at home with them most of the time. And all the gear- everything german made and a Bit (goes in the mouth) was costing unto £300 for a bit of german silver....osteopaths, vets, trainers, farriers, feed, hay, bedding - and on it went, even without paying £200 a week in livery ! Sadly, my top 2 horses died 3 years between each other and when i lost my boy aged 28 - 2 years ago - having owned him from a 3 year old, I lost heart. I haven't replaced him as I couldn't. I have not found anything to do instead of horses but am still involved, teaching and judging. But now, and it is an unfamiliar sensation, I have my nails done, get my hair done properly (£150 every 7 weeks) and try to fly club when i travel...or did do before C19. Thing is, I don't feel any better off financially and all I want is to turn that clock back and be horsing every day...it is a true DRUG! Most importantly i don't feel nearly as well grounded as I once was as my horse was literally a therapist ! I miss that connection...I dont miss the gossipy horsey circles though, and that competitive vibe that runs through the whole horsey thing....they can v definitely be a substitute for some and for some 'ladies of a certain age' they are real 'thing'.....so I will carry on with my well done nails and hair ( once my salon opens again) but I miss the days of Horsing...plus have put on a stone slowly over the past 2 years due to moving less....walking dogs doesn't quite cut it!

TazSyd · 07/06/2020 18:04

@MrsAvocet

We’ve got a 2 man scorpion, bought 2nd hand years ago. We pay for it to be moored in the north too (we live about 30mins dive away). There is a world of difference between a scorpion and a celebrity super yacht! Sailing is not as elitist as some people think.

Treacletoots · 07/06/2020 18:19

Food. We live in an amazing place where local food, cheese, wine and fruit and veg are all grown around us. We spend a weekend often visiting all the producers for our favourite bread, milk fresh from the farm vending machine, ice cream, pick your own fruit, stiltons etc. Mmm

Apart from that, our home, allotment and garden. We love bright shiny things and try and make our house as fun and enjoyable as possible.
