AIBU in being dismayed at satsuma variance?

You buy a hairnet full of satsumas and they're delicious. Juicy, tasty, and easy to peel. You go back the next day for another hairnet full and it turns out they're solid, hard to peel, tasteless orange packets and sadness and tragedy.

Why is it so hard to trust a satsuma?

YANBU. It’s one of life’s great mysteries.

AriettyHomily · 06/06/2020 20:11

They've b en taking lessons from the avocados

WaffleCash · 06/06/2020 20:11

I think you've done well if you got a full bag of satsumas that were consistent in taste (good or bad). I always find there's a huge variation in taste among the same bad

AllieAct · 06/06/2020 20:11

I feel your pain. The most untrustworthy of fruits.

WaffleCash · 06/06/2020 20:12

*bag

Judeslife · 06/06/2020 20:13

I misread this as 'satsuma violence' and had to click on the title Blush

CrazyDuchess · 06/06/2020 20:14

Exactly why I stick to chocolate bars...... at least you know what you are getting in every packet Grin

7ofNine · 06/06/2020 20:14

Where on earth are you finding them at this time of year? My local shops only stock them around Christmas Sad

YangShanPo · 06/06/2020 20:15

It's even more annoying if they are labelled easy peel when they are anything but.

Mysterian · 06/06/2020 20:15

Just had a couple of good ones. Smile, but when they're over the next ones have a lot to live up to.

Choccyp1g · 06/06/2020 20:16

And another thing, I am convinced they always put one rotten one into each pack.

MonsteraCheeseplant · 06/06/2020 20:16

It's because you're buying them way out of season. They're only good around Christmas unfortunately.

I hate the baggy ones. So gross.

YangShanPo · 06/06/2020 20:17

Where on earth are you finding them at this time of year? My local shops only stock them around Christmas Where is this shop located, 1955?

Cottipus · 06/06/2020 20:18

All little peelers are of variable quality, not just satsumas.

Aria2015 · 06/06/2020 20:18

YANBU, it's a real lottery that's for sure.

Nottherealslimshady · 06/06/2020 20:22

This is genuinely why I barely ever have fruit. So inconsistent, not worth bothering.

Ohtherewearethen · 06/06/2020 20:23

YANBU, I stopped buying them for this very reason. I like a flutter as much as the next person but I couldn't be doing with the disappointment any more

Mistystar99 · 06/06/2020 20:24

Ain't this the truth. I got lucky yesterday but the week before they were absolutely minging.

AdaColeman · 06/06/2020 20:26

They are not as deceitful as pears, which are rock hard for days, then you give them a squeeze and they suddenly feel tender & juicy.

But, in the time it takes you to get a plate & a knife, they have disintegrated in to a mound of tasteless cottonwool mush.
“Ripen at home” and “Ready to eat” are two of the greatest lies of our time.

DrManhattan · 06/06/2020 20:26

I feel this applies to KFC. Sometimes amazing sometimes not. A bad one can put you off for months.

dementedma · 06/06/2020 20:27

Last lot were so disappointing. Inedible. Little orange fuckers.
What about pears? There is a nanosecond when they are ripe, juicy and delicious. Miss it, and they are rock hard or pulp.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 06/06/2020 20:28

I'm another one who hates the inconsistency of fruit.
My local greengrocers did amazing oranges, consistently good for months. Then a big bag of them were so unpleasant. Gutted. If you buy a 5 pack of Mars Bars you know what all the bars will taste like. But the good oranges are SO good...

SpeedofaSloth · 06/06/2020 20:28

I never buy clementines for this reason. It's big oranges or actual satsumas only in this house.

Lamentations · 06/06/2020 20:28

YABU to buy satsumas in the summer. You deserve everything you get.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/06/2020 20:35

People are getting confused here and seem to be wrongly naming small citrus fruits as satsumas. Satsumas are only available in this country for a few halcyon weeks before Christmas. The rest of the time we get the so called easy peelers, tangerines, clementines and possibly mandarins. Satsumas are far superior to all the rest. Oranges are a bit more reliable year round.
