Holiday will you lose money this summer?

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 15:14

I have a holiday booked to Portugal mid August. Flight and accommodation booked separately. Accommodation can be cancelled.

Flights were £1200. I have a feeling the flights will go ahead.

To change the dates will cost a few hundred minimum and could just be kicking the can. Sunk costs fallacy etc.

Pros to going

Helps the industry
A change of scenery. ( view/weather)

Cons

Live with over 70s
Travel insurance if ill abroad
We were talking my sons friend too.
Queues for pool, beach, shops. Will they even be open?
Not having the ' good'time you would expect on a holiday.
People (some)in Cornwall ( from some threads) don't want visitors so do the portugese or locals?

Losing 1k makes me feel sick. I don't want to go though. I think its too soon for me.

Does anyone else think they will lose money this summer?

I have flights booked mid July and I think they'll go ahead. Accommodation has been cancelled as the owner sold the apartment. I could find somewhere else you stay but don't want to travel unless FCO advice changes. Still in limbo and it's only 5 weeks away.

listsandbudgets · 06/06/2020 16:41

DD (14) was meant to be going to Australia for 3 weeks in July, with her best friend and her mum. Everything was paid for and she was so excited.

Its not as horrendous as it might have been as luckily they were staying with family so we've only lost the flight costs but they weren't exactly peanuts. We're hanging on just in case but really cant see it happening and I doubt the insurers are going to want to pay up if the actual flights are still running.

Feel so sorry for DD thiugh she seems a lot less upset than I expected.

oohnicevase · 06/06/2020 16:46

I was supposed to go 11/7 having booked and paid for it last year but I didn't want to hang on anymore and changed it to next year . It was a package though and I think there are clearer rules for them . There was no way I was getting on that plane and being the first people into the 'fire' .
My change was free and it took me 3 hours to get through and another 1 to sort it out so be prepared to hang on. !

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/06/2020 16:49

No, I always book packages so I'm protected. I had a holiday booked for July that I've moved to next year.

Karwomannghia · 06/06/2020 16:52

I’ve got a Ryanair flight booked to France mid July but not paid for accommodation yet. Just waiting to see what happens.

Lemons1571 · 06/06/2020 16:53

I’ve lost £400 on a villa deposit but that was peanuts compared to the rest of the holiday cost that I’m slowly getting back.

I have another “Con” for you. NHS tracer phones you the day before or en route to the airport, and tells you to go home and isolate.

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 17:02

Did they let you do that for free?

Yes there us that too. I don't want to go not in 8 weeks time.
Ryanair flight so will probably go ahead though.

Yes, it was with Tui and they are doing free amendment for holidays up to the end of August currently.

Matilda15 · 06/06/2020 17:11

We were able to move our planned August holiday with TUI to next year as we knew we wouldn't feel comfortable going this year.

HellSmith · 06/06/2020 17:12

No, on the rare occasion I fly short haul I book a last minute package. I always DIY long haul no later than 5 weeks before I travel.

starrynight19 · 06/06/2020 17:16

Our Ryan air flight to Portugal in August has cancelled the flight going out but not the one coming back so that’s helpful.
We have lost a £100 deposit up to now for dd dancing trip to Disneyland Paris.
Seem to have been able to get refunds for other trips.

okiedokieme · 06/06/2020 17:16

Have ferries booked, they can be date changed for £25 but as it's September we are waiting and seeing.

MrDarcysMa · 06/06/2020 17:20

yes booked easy jet flights and hotel separately to rhodes in mid sept. Not sure about going and definitely can't go if we have to isolate on return for 2 weeks?! (work) but i expect flights will be running by then and hotel open . so if we don't go will lose 1200£.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 06/06/2020 17:22

As it stands we've rescheduled eurocamp (no charge) , cancelled our ferries (lost 128) and if on 2nd July (30 days before due to travel) the guidelines say you can travel to France, we will lose 480 deposit paid on a gite. (Our insurance will only pay out if 30 days before the guidance is no travel). However, we reasoned that our holiday could be hugely affected. We were travelling with a vulnerable person who wouldn't be able to come with us now anyway. Plus, we figured that even if you could board a ferry, you wouldn't be able to if you had any symptoms eg, fever or cough, and even if they weren't CV. Too much of a risk that you'd be turned away at the port (either side) and the costs involved in that would have been far more. Quite frankly, it's too much financial risk.

blue25 · 06/06/2020 17:25

We’ve moved ours to next year. Tui let us transfer the deposit which was helpful.

IndecentFeminist · 06/06/2020 17:28

Portugal have been encouraging visitors

Teacher12345 · 06/06/2020 17:31

Ours is July 2nd and it looks like our first holiday abroad for 4 years will go ahead without us and we will lose 2k

LockdownLoppy · 06/06/2020 17:31

We had a trip to Spain booked for August, flights with Ryanair, private villa. Ryanair had changed the flight time significantly and offered a refund ( they had to under the rules) so I'm waiting for the refund to come through, villa deposit has been refunded in full, car hire has been refunded - it was a flexible rate, airport hotel was a flexible rate and refund has been received. Airport parking was a non-flexible rate but Holiday Extras have issued a credit which is great! Travel insurance have refunded in full.

loadypoady · 06/06/2020 17:33

We have a hotel booked in Spain from 4th to 11th July non cancellable and the hotel are not responding to emails or calls but are posting on FB they are open from 1st July.
I am waiting on the FCO advise and if it changes then feel I will have no choice other than to go otherwise I will lose lots of money. If it doesn’t change then I should be able to claim on the insurance and just suck up the excess.
I’ve always booked non cancellable accommodation but a lesson learnt going forward not to do so.

Xenia · 06/06/2020 17:36

Sadly packages are choosing to ignore the law this year. Mine should have refunded us when they cancelled 2 weeks ago. The law says refunds in 2 weeks. They have now said they will refund me by end of the month (£2200 at risk here) Let us hope they keep their word... It was a June holiday

Lovetoridemybicycle · 06/06/2020 17:45

Good luck Xenia. We are still waiting for £6500 back from Virgin Holidays that was cancelled mid March. It seems to very much depend on which company you are with. Virgin now saying 90 days. Really looking forward to restarting the battle for flights booked in August. AirBnb has cancelled and refunded the apartment for that one.

Skigal86 · 06/06/2020 17:46

We have a home in Portugal and are due to go at the beginning of July, we’ve accepted that the flight/airport will be awful, but once we’re through that everything will be fine. We obviously won’t go if the FCO is still advising against travel. We have a lovely garden and our own pool, lots of restaurants nearby have reopened in the last couple of weeks and people are starting to return, lots of restaurants doing takeaway/delivery if we don’t want to go out. Safe communities Portugal has all the up to date info on rules and restrictions, main ones being compulsory masks in shops, restaurants have limited capacity and beaches have rules on social distancing.

Inthemuckheap · 06/06/2020 17:50

Yes I wrote off the deposit as didn't want to have the holiday balance sitting in their account for next 4 months nor did I want to rebook same place next year as have other plans.

I (con) also don't have enough A/L to isolate for 2 weeks after my holiday which is something else you may need to consider. If that's the rule then you'll have to return by 15/8 in order for kids to be allowed back to school.

Ryan air flight cancelled to Spain in August ...they contacted us this week
