Holiday will you lose money this summer?

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 15:14

I have a holiday booked to Portugal mid August. Flight and accommodation booked separately. Accommodation can be cancelled.

Flights were £1200. I have a feeling the flights will go ahead.

To change the dates will cost a few hundred minimum and could just be kicking the can. Sunk costs fallacy etc.

Pros to going

Helps the industry
A change of scenery. ( view/weather)

Cons

Live with over 70s
Travel insurance if ill abroad
We were talking my sons friend too.
Queues for pool, beach, shops. Will they even be open?
Not having the ' good'time you would expect on a holiday.
People (some)in Cornwall ( from some threads) don't want visitors so do the portugese or locals?

Losing 1k makes me feel sick. I don't want to go though. I think its too soon for me.

Does anyone else think they will lose money this summer?

ForeverInTheSun

Oh ouch!

We had flights to Greece with Easyjet for the end of June. I think we'll be okay (I certainly hope so as it was £900). Fortunately our main accommodation belongs to a family member who has put us in her diary for the same weeks next year (she doesn't charge anyway). One hotel didn't take a deposit but we're regulars and the other has moved our booking to next year. If we can take longer than a fortnight's annual leave we might travel over land next year and fly back.

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/06/2020 19:21

We might lose 2k in flights and the deposit for a non cancelable deposit on a villa.

ForeverInTheSun · 06/06/2020 19:31

It's was the worst timing and luck in many ways. If it had been slightly later in March after the lockdown began we would have been refunded through the insurance, if it had been now in June the same but we were a week too early at the start and now a month too late at the end. Unfortunately it is what it is and I'm not sure I'm ever buying insurance again. It was super pointless, unless I am hospitalised with my pregnancy then it doesn't count. Even though it's a pandemic which means I am vulnerable. The insurance even confirmed that if something happens to me and the baby they could cover me and not the baby! It's mental!

1FootInTheRave · 06/06/2020 19:41

Not sure yet.

Due in cornwall end of august (booked last year).

Not keen on going really but will await advice nearer the time.

ShiveringCoyote · 06/06/2020 19:42

@Teacher12345 I'm booked to go to Spain on July 2nd and all my flights etc are still going ahead. Staying in family members accommodation. We have made the decision to go.

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/06/2020 19:49

The flights are still available to buy and given that there are quite a few of the seats already selected and then add the one's like us that haven't pre booked seats, I can't see them being cancelled.

So add the £1K + of the non cancellable villa, that's 2k of our money down the drain Sad

Our dilemma is to pay another £1k for the balance of the villa and hope we can go if the numbers are low enough or claim on the insurance if the FO advise against travel, therefore possibly losing 3k if the FO lift their advice, or cut our losses now and lose 2k.

Given I don't want to go unless the numbers remain as the are or if they are lower than they are now it's a toss up between losing a definite 2k or gambling on losing 3k or possibly going. I'm torn.

Teacher12345 · 06/06/2020 19:52

@ShiveringCoyote we assumed we definitely wouldn’t be able to and so didn’t get kids passports sorted. Even if we had, DH is still washing the shopping, he isn’t going to be ready mentally in 3 weeks to get on a plane. He is scared of flying at the best of times. Plus the kids are too young to be queuing to get in the pool etc.

Nosuchluck · 06/06/2020 19:57

I had 2 cruises booked. One was cancelled and we can either have 2.8k back or 3.5k cruise credit. We cancelled the other cruise before it was cancelled as didn't want the risk of it going ahead and us paying the balance. We got £500 of the £1400 deposit back so lost £900 but saved about 12/13k by not not going. All we've booked instead is a few nights in a UK hotel for just under a grand so we actually saved about 15k.

Lincslady53 · 06/06/2020 19:59

We were due to go to Spain this Tuesday. Accomodation, cancelled and full refund, car park cancelled and refunded all but £10, Travel insurance cost £70 lost, Easyjet flights cancelled, refused vouchers and rebooking cos we care for a 96 year old, and don't want to put her in a respite care home, so hopefully we will one day get our flight costs refunded. So not lost too much, about £80 as long as we get the flight refund.

1swede · 06/06/2020 20:00

I think that some flights will be cancelled even if flying again. I can’t see many people booking new holidays flights at the moment And with loads cancelling and rearranging, some of the summer flights will be very low numbers. If the flight isn’t profitable, I can’t see the companies flying and compounding their already dire financial situation.

1swede · 06/06/2020 20:01

I haven’t lost anything but next years rearranged holiday cost more than this years so ultimately it has cost something.

TheChosenTwo · 06/06/2020 20:11

Not yet!
We had a holiday booked for easter and were able to change the dates for next year without any charge which was great.
We have a holiday booked to Spain on the 20th July and will just wait and see. All booked on a credit card so hopefully some protection there.
Haven’t even checked our insurance, are they covering people?
If they cancel, we will lose £150 deposit to Booking.com and £1400 if we can’t get our flight costs back for whatever reason.
We have rented a villa with our own pool so hopefully if they will just let us in to the country we will be happy enough just to stay there and not go out other than for food and provisions.

Itsjustmee · 06/06/2020 20:35

I had a trip to USA booked for two weeks in June
I had only paid £150 deposit with British Airways for hotel & flights it was a package holiday .

They cancelled and sent me a email that I would get a voucher
I ignored that .
Then they sent a email last week saying they would refund amount back to my credit card
So I’m just waiting on that

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 21:59

Looks like some companies have a better customer experience than others.

Fluffybutter · 06/06/2020 22:03

No idea yet.
We have quite a big holiday to the US mid August .
Everything still going ahead at the moment so it’s just a waiting game

WaffleCash · 06/06/2020 22:11

We're considering a holiday to Iceland, flights and accommodation are available, have to take a covid test in the airport in Iceland, able to quarantine on return but need to investigate insurance situation. All bookings are flexible so not worried about cancellation side of it, we just would need insurance if we went and need to be clear on what it covers.

BackforGood · 06/06/2020 22:42

@skigirl. I wish you well with that

ds was due to fly to Spain in mid March, after they were locked down and the FCO were advising Brits not to travel. RyanAir flew so won't refund ds's ticket.

the return flight (which they admit didn't fly) he is still "waiting for his claim to be processed" Hmm

m0therofdragons · 06/06/2020 22:50

Virgin asked what dates we’d like to move to for our Florida holiday to but no idea what the outcome will be. Just have to wait and see what happens to our £15k holiday. On the plus side this is the first time we’ve booked a package holiday so I’m hoping it’ll work out without too much loss. Was tough paying the final amount knowing we won’t be going. That sucks but means we are insured/ covered by credit cards and virgin have a duty to do something 🤞

coffeeandteav · 07/06/2020 10:40

Just have to wait and see what happens to our £15k holiday.

Gosh I bet it was tough paying the final balance.

Waiting to hear. Have managed to change UK one without cost to next year. Waiting to hear about trip to Italy, but it's £500 which is nothing in comparison to others on here.

Sexnotgender · 07/06/2020 10:57

Had flights booked for my brothers wedding in April, it got moved to October so I dutifully moved my flights to October. It’s now been pushed back again to next April 😏

Fluffybutter · 07/06/2020 11:26

@m0therofdragons Hate to say it but I think it’ll cost you more .
We are also booked with virgin but to a different part of the states and it seems that it’s either wait months for a refund like everyone else or rebook for next year at a higher price .
Our holiday is £2000 more if we want to move it to next year

m0therofdragons · 07/06/2020 14:48

@Fluffybutter I’m assuming it will but we can only wait and see what they offer. If it’s too much then we’ll go for a refund. We’ve selected the exact dates for a year’s time.

@coffeeandteav the holiday is for 7 adults and 2 dc.

They haven’t contacted me yet to change the dates so at the moment we’re still going .
It’s hard as I don’t want to pay 10 grand for a holiday but get half the experience

hotcrossbun83 · 07/06/2020 17:54

April UK holiday transferred to next year for free, had European flights booked in July to see family and BA have given us vouchers (was only £150 as was the deposit). Last holiday of the year is driving to France at the end of August and we are going to wait and see - if we can go we will, eurotunnel is safe and we will stick to the villa and pool if needed rather than go to the beach. Meant to be staying at center parks near Disney on the way home and I am more doubtful we will do that part but it is paid for so will need to wait and see
