Holiday will you lose money this summer?

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 15:14

I have a holiday booked to Portugal mid August. Flight and accommodation booked separately. Accommodation can be cancelled.

Flights were £1200. I have a feeling the flights will go ahead.

To change the dates will cost a few hundred minimum and could just be kicking the can. Sunk costs fallacy etc.

Pros to going

Helps the industry
A change of scenery. ( view/weather)

Cons

Live with over 70s
Travel insurance if ill abroad
We were talking my sons friend too.
Queues for pool, beach, shops. Will they even be open?
Not having the ' good'time you would expect on a holiday.
People (some)in Cornwall ( from some threads) don't want visitors so do the portugese or locals?

Losing 1k makes me feel sick. I don't want to go though. I think its too soon for me.

Does anyone else think they will lose money this summer?

We've moved our holiday to next year at no extra cost. In fact we have been allowed to choose a replacement holiday up to 20% more expensive at no cost to us. That's with Tui.

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/06/2020 17:25

We had a big holiday planned which I am trying to move to next year. Depending on exactly what happens insurance should cover the bits we cant move (if FO continues to recommend against going).

On the one hand I'm sort of gutted (partly for not going, partly for pot lost money - saved up over 5 years) but on the other hand I spent quite a bit of April thinking I was going to die so, well, it's only money.

JustAPassingFashion · 09/06/2020 17:30

@RigaBalsam that my my suggestion too but my rule abiding husband just wasn't going for it Grin

strugglingwithdeciding · 09/06/2020 18:47

Yes lost our deposit as we cancelled as didn't want to pay the £3000 due holiday mid July and we could of waited to see if was cancelled and got it all back but just incase it wasn't we didn't want to risk going abroad with lots of regulations on place so opted to loose £240 ,

Guylan · 09/06/2020 19:40

Not me but a friend has booked with Loveholidays for August. They can change their hotel booking to next year for £100 but the flights are with Ryanair, total £1200, and they can’t change them to next year, only up to March, so if FO says they can travel by August they don’t go going to lose a lot of money if they don’t go.

Karwomannghia · 13/06/2020 14:33

If anyone is waiting for an email re a refund from cottages.com you can request one without it by going to access my booking on their website, putting your reference and surname in and then choosing the refund option. It says it’ll be processed within 30 days.

Brunionfire · 13/06/2020 15:23

We’re meant to be going to Austria end of July, all booked separately. Hotel have been fab & will refund our deposit with no cancellation fees up to 7 days prior to arrival or transfer it to the following year.

The sticking point is the flights with EasyJet. No idea if they will go ahead or not, no Idea when we will find out & no way of contacting them (no email/chat and by phone just says it’s very busy-goodbye & cuts you off). Website no help either. Only option at the mo appears to be to change the flights to a different date/time but they aren’t available for next July (latest is May & that’s no good for where we are going).

As it stands we are left no choice but to either cancel now & lose the cost of the flights (£600) or wait til closer to the date & see if the FCO advice changes, if quarantine rules are relaxed & if the flight will go ahead.

If EasyJet cancels the flight but don’t tell us in time to rearrange the other bits we also stand to lose the hotel/airport hotel/parking (approx£700) although we should in theory be able to claim on our insurance?

Feel very mixed about going anyway - on the one hand Austria has not been hard hit by CV and everything will be open as normal, just face masks on public transport/cable cars but I worry about the airport/flight & consequences if one of us fall ill whilst there. It’s all so uncertain & just wish we knew for sure one way or another.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 15/06/2020 14:19

Has anyone had a Jet2 refund? My flights in July have been cancelled and they've emailed to say they'll refund but they're only talking about the outbound one?

CHIRIBAYA · 17/06/2020 12:52

EasyJet are playing the long game here. Waiting for all the borders to reopen, which they will, so flights don't get cancelled and customers are left out of pocket. They say they are offering the option to move flights which is great if you are not forced to holiday in the school holidays leaving the option of Christmas, Feb half term and Easter. Our May half term next year falls ever so conveniently JUST outside Easyjet's schedule end for 2021. Many destinations offer flights only until the end of October this year so very few rebook options for families. I wouldn't mind but they sent me an e-mail 7 weeks ago telling me that their summer schedule would be released shortly and I moved our villa booking to next year based on that. On top of them failing to protect my personal data I am none too pleased with Easyjet right now. [email protected] has been informed.

Khione · 17/06/2020 13:06

If the flights are on I would definitely go.

I am hoping to book to go to Turkey in September (September because August too hot). I'd go tomorrow if they let me. Even if I was in one hotel most of the time. I'd go for the economy over there, the change of scenery and the weather. They, unlike UK tourist areas, can't wait for us to be back.

Mary46 · 17/06/2020 13:09

Turkey sounds fab. We feel its zero break feck all open eating wise, book pool slot. Hoping ours cancelled. Malaga July. Then quarantine aswell. We feel thats no break

Abkbjbjb · 17/06/2020 13:09

@CHIRIBAYA we requested an EasyJet voucher for our holiday we are not going on on 14th July, we presumed we can use this voucher to pay for July 2021 flights when they are released is that not allowed?

We have been saving/planning for 5 years and were due to fly to Orlando in mid-August and had 2 weeks booked to stay on-site at Disneyworld. With all the changes that Disney have made (including removing the dining package we had booked) we've now cancelled the accommodation and park tickets. Waiting for a refund of the full amount paid (including deposit).
Not sure what's happening with flights yet. We can cancel now and get a voucher to use by December 2021 or hold out, hope the flights are cancelled and get a full refind on the credit card. We could end up with a £2,300 credit voucher!
I don't hold out much hope of getting the £140 back from Holiday Extras for airport hotel and parking.

Abkbjbjb how did you request a voucher? Did EasyJet email you with that option?

We’ve heard nothing & can only find an option to transfer to a different date on their website, which like CHIRIBAYA is no good for us.

Abkbjbjb · 18/06/2020 13:46

We emailed: [email protected] and said that we were due to travel 14th July returning 2 weeks later and asked what are options were as we wouldn't be travelling. They came back to us pretty quickly and offered us the voucher. U complete a form and return to them by 28th June and the voucher will follow. So go on ahead and email that address 😀

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 18/06/2020 13:57

I'm another one awaiting a refund I'm legally entitled to due to operator cancellation. In APRIL. We booked £2800 of flights with Lufthansa via Expedia. Lufthansa saying our booking is with Expedia, Expedia saying not much at all other than offering a rebook voucher when we want the cash. Going to try a credit card chargeback at the weekend but paid almost 12 months ago so might not be possible. Then might try an insurance claim to see if that nudges them into action...

Next time we will book directly with the airline even if more expensive, as any cancellation/refund process is far simpler. We booked our accommodation directly with 3 difference hotels and they've all been fab and refunded immediately.

Fab thankyou. I think we’ll try that
Bebbanburger · 20/06/2020 12:29

Ours was a DIY in July. We've changed one hotel for next year and got a voucher for the ferry. Our Airbnb cancelled us and refunded very quickly. Our other hotels we hadnt paid in advance. So no, not out of pocket at the moment.. just hoping prices don't rise drastically for next summer.

ssd · 20/06/2020 14:13

I'm finding that easyjet are telling me to go to Expedia and Expedia are telling me to go to easyjet...

RigaBalsam · 03/07/2020 17:50

Well it looks like my flight money will be gone portugal is not on the good list.

Casablanca78 · 03/07/2020 18:26

We have a holiday booked with TUI for 22nd July and they are still insisting it's going ahead. Even though I'm on a Facebook page for the hotel directly as it's somewhere we've been several times before and they aren't even going to be open until 25th July.

DuckyMcDuck · 03/07/2020 18:32

Where is your holiday to Casablanca78? We were due to go to Greece with Tui on 21st July and they cancelled it last week.

I thought they'd cancelled all July holidays.

Casablanca78 · 03/07/2020 19:14

@DuckyMcDuck its Ibiza. Its one of the 8 destinations they say they are planning to start flying to from 11th July unfortunately. We don't really want to go but will if it means losing the money otherwise. Just holding on to the hope that the hotel is saying it won't be open.
