Holiday will you lose money this summer?

coffeeandteav · 06/06/2020 15:14

I have a holiday booked to Portugal mid August. Flight and accommodation booked separately. Accommodation can be cancelled.

Flights were £1200. I have a feeling the flights will go ahead.

To change the dates will cost a few hundred minimum and could just be kicking the can. Sunk costs fallacy etc.

Pros to going

Helps the industry
A change of scenery. ( view/weather)

Cons

Live with over 70s
Travel insurance if ill abroad
We were talking my sons friend too.
Queues for pool, beach, shops. Will they even be open?
Not having the ' good'time you would expect on a holiday.
People (some)in Cornwall ( from some threads) don't want visitors so do the portugese or locals?

Losing 1k makes me feel sick. I don't want to go though. I think its too soon for me.

Does anyone else think they will lose money this summer?

We had a cruise booked for 16th June. 19 nights around the med to Croatia and Venice etc.
It's obviously been cancelled by the cruise company but wev been given 125% future cruise credit so wev booked same itinerary same ship for next August.

m0therofdragons · 07/06/2020 20:50

@Fluffybutter once we paid the balance we received an email asking us for our preference and if we want to move the dates what are our preferred dates. We responded with the exact same weeks in 2021. Who knows what’ll happen. Apparently universal is prioritising those in their hotels and are managing well. I’d still prefer to wait a year.

PhoneLock · 08/06/2020 09:54

Rather optimistically, I have just booked airport car parking for the end of August. It was really cheap for some reason.

Nosuchluck · 08/06/2020 10:47

I can't think why!

Daisy03 · 08/06/2020 10:54

I’m going to ‘lose’ around £800 on non refundable hotel rooms in Oct.
However I’m not looking as it as lost as I’d have used it anyway if I’d gone.
I’ve managed to reschedule flights for next year and the rest of the holiday I’ve had refunded.
So I’ve lost a holiday, but I’ll be saving all the money I’d have spent on this trip, so I’ll have my holiday as normal next year, and probably an extra long weekend I wouldn’t have had otherwise by the spending money I haven’t used.
I’m just looking at it as sunken costs, if I’d gone this year it would be a more stressful situation with Unknown’s and restrictions

We lost 2 x 200 deposit as we cancelled TUI holiday in July

Jeremyironsnothing · 08/06/2020 11:00

We've just had an offer of a refund of 50% from our non cancelled deposit, villa owner. So still lose 1.5k but better than 3k, split between three families. We could transfer to next year but the three families circumstances will have changed by then, making it impossible for everyone to get together at the same time.
Trouble is what do we do with the flights. Each family is set to lose 1k each for those as well, if they aren't cancelled.

AirBelle · 08/06/2020 11:14

Cancelled with Tui, they owe me money but trying to get it is like trying to get blood out of a stone, over 12 weeks now...............

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 08/06/2020 20:50

Our Jet2 flights to Spain in July have just been cancelled. Have to wait for them to contact us to get a refund.

starrynight19 · 08/06/2020 20:59

Looks like they cancelling more flights up to the middle of July now so hopefully that helps make the decision for some people.

Karwomannghia · 09/06/2020 12:11

Just found out that cottages.com will now offer refunds for holidays that were cancelled which is great news.

ErickBroch · 09/06/2020 12:30

We are having to pay £150 each to move our flights to Canada. The airline is being ridiculous - Canada aren't letting British nationals in but apparently the flight is still going ahead.

Rafflesway · 09/06/2020 12:56

Just to add to what karwomannghia has advised.

The whole of the Holiday Lettings Group - which includes Hoseasons - are having to refund now since the regulator stepped in. Great news as I know many fellow Mnetters stood to lose considerable sums from the arseholes. 😡

We haven’t lost anything as yet, touch wood! Were due to travel to Thailand end of May which was cancelled but only offered a Refund Credit Note. Didn’t want to take the risk so rebooked exactly the same holiday for 2021 but for April - when weather is better - and actually got a slightly better price because of current reductions so operator now owe us £8 😂. Got a credit note for car park which we will use for next April holiday.

Another Far East trip booked for mid November 🙏🙏🙏! Do we need it or what!

HerdImmunityByStealth · 09/06/2020 15:03

Is the regulator going to be stepping in to help Tui customers?

They are uncontactable and keeping hold of money, even though they know they are supposed to be paying it back.

I had the Portugal flight out cancelled, but that was From Gatwick So I wasn’t surprised

Moved it to a LHR departure via Madrid and waited for the return To LGW to get cancelled so I could move that to LHR too.

The LHR - Mad then cancelled so my booking was a mess!

A not even remotely quick call to BA and it’s all sorted. Fingers crossed they don’t cancel the outbound again as it’s all steam ahead so far for the end of July.

Oh... and then I checked the car hire and saw that it would be a couple of hundred quid cheaper, so messages them and they rebooked my reservation and it was over £300 cheaper!

Portugal has taken this cv very seriously, they’re extremely keen to have us there, and for it to be safe for us and for them too.

They’re working hard on traffic light system for beaches so you know when they’re full etc.

We’re going to rural Portugal inland so I know we’re very far away from anyone and everyone

If your holiday is booked op, I’d keep it. The only thing to consider is the 70yos - can they stay elsewhere for a couple of weeks after you get back to be safe? Could you?

CarlaH · 09/06/2020 16:13

Are travel insurers covering people abroad for the virus?

HerdImmunityByStealth · 09/06/2020 16:21

No, don't think so

Squirrelblanket · 09/06/2020 16:24

We have a holiday booked to Cyprus in September. At the moment, there are restrictions on both sides which would mean we wouldn't be able/willing to go. It looks like the ones in UK will probably be a distant memory by then so it all depends on whether Cyprus change theirs.

(Currently if you are coming from counties which had a high rate of the virus, you have to pay €60 per person for a test. Then isolate in your hotel until you get the results. Then if it's positive you'll be taken to a separate hotel to isolate for 14 days, after which you have to arrange your own flight home.)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/06/2020 16:24

Staysure are covering now for coronavirus.

starsinyourpies · 09/06/2020 16:31

Greece booked for 5 weeks time, we have paid 50% deposit and expect to haggle next week when they want the balance, will try to negotiate to move it to next summer. I just don't think it would be enjoyable even if possible this summer.

JustAPassingFashion · 09/06/2020 16:34

We've lost £800 in a similar situation to you OP.
We had paid £650 and Ryan air said the flights are likely to go ahead. We don't want to go, so our options were to play chicken to see if they cancel, or cancel there and then.

We looked at the option of changing and were told we could for £800.... to March which is out of season. We could then pay the same again to move the holiday for a second time later in the year.

Instead we opted to cancel, but had to pay and extra £200 to do so. MADNESS and I'm still cross Angry

RigaBalsam · 09/06/2020 16:54

You had to pay £200 to cancel a flight? That's outrageous.

JustAPassingFashion · 09/06/2020 16:58

@RigaBalsam yes. Well, to cancel the whole holiday but I think it was a few pound to cancel the hotel.

Admin fees and the fee to cancel the insurance policy.... we did say we were happy to leave it running but the INSISTED it had to be cancelled.

In total it was £800ish but they took the £600+ we had paid towards the final cost.... good of them Angry

RigaBalsam · 09/06/2020 17:07

That's insane. I am angry for you too.

I have flights booked for £900 in August. I was just not going to turn up if I decided not to go. Not sure if the protocol really.
