to hate what my name has become

I have a name which is ridiculed a lot in society and is frequently used as an insult. I already have low self esteem after years of abuse and depression and anxiety as a result. MN and other social media was my respite from all the emotional fallout of the abuse.
On MN now my name is used as an insult and thrown around casually like it doesn't matter.
It fucking does matter. My one safe place to escape my feelings has been pulled from under my feet.

"There are plenty of women that are dim witted, that complain or are crass and obnoxious across the generations!"

Yes - boomer, entitled snowflake etc

Russellbrandshair · 06/06/2020 15:27

It's the baseless calling of the manager, from either sex, that marks one as a dick

Then why is there no equivalent name for a man doing it?

Goldenbear · 06/06/2020 15:28

Plenty of all genders.

rawlikesushi · 06/06/2020 15:28

"What does the fact she's middle-aged have to do with it? Are you saying those behaviours would be OK if she was young? If not, why mention that she is middle-aged?"

Because the Karen meme is middle-aged. There are other terms for other generations.

ChocolateQuiltedShitPig · 06/06/2020 15:29

This absolutely would not bother me

CecilyP · 06/06/2020 15:30

^Titty was changed to Tatty according to this

www.theguardian.com/film/2016/may/24/swallows-and-amazons-titty-renamed-tatty-in-bbc-film^

So her real name was actually Mavis! I’m surprised her niece seriously thought a modern film would have a girl called Titty in it!

rawlikesushi · 06/06/2020 15:30

"Then why is there no equivalent name for a man doing it?"

Brad.

Ok- what meme refers to a young entitled man asking for the manager then? What first male name is used for that that we see all over social media?

Russellbrandshair · 06/06/2020 15:30

Brad?! Not in the uk it isn’t

Russellbrandshair · 06/06/2020 15:30

I know of no meme referring to brad

Josette77 · 06/06/2020 15:30

Not much outrage about Shaniqua or Bye Felicia.

I know lots of Karens and never associate them with the memes. One of my closest friends thinks they are funny and shares them.

Your name is not your identity. Please do not believe that.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/06/2020 15:33

hmmmm Ive never seen a meme referring to "brad"

SquashedSpring · 06/06/2020 15:33

So what we have are various negative behaviours (which seem to be different depending upon whether you're in the US or UK) which have all being conveniently grouped together under one term, which happens to be a woman's name.

Pelleas · 06/06/2020 15:33

"What does the fact she's middle-aged have to do with it? Are you saying those behaviours would be OK if she was young? If not, why mention that she is middle-aged?

Because the Karen meme is middle-aged. There are other terms for other generations.

That doesn't answer my question. I repeat, why was this woman's age relevant?

I'd also add, why is her level of intelligence being thrown at her as an insult? No one chooses to be 'dim-witted', as you put it - it's not her fault if she was born with low intelligence.

SoupDragon · 06/06/2020 15:33

Change it by deed poll if you like? It's pretty simple and not too expensive.

If your child said they were being teased and insulted because of their name, would you suggest they change it or would you deal with the people doing the teasing and insulting?

MrMeSeeks · 06/06/2020 15:34

It is not your fault.
I hate people using the name this way, but i think this shows up the person who uses the name like this much more!
I think it's extremely pathetic.

Genderwitched · 06/06/2020 15:35

I can honestly say I have never met anyone with the first name "White Van Man" Hmm

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/06/2020 15:35

I can honestly say I have never met anyone with the first name "White Van Man

Right? lolol

Josette77 · 06/06/2020 15:36

If you google Brad memes you'll find a ton.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 06/06/2020 15:36

@HappyLemonSadLemon Possibly Darren ?

OP for what its worth I like the name Karen .
I have a cousin Karen and always remember the beautiful Karen Carpenter

Those who use Karen or Wendy etc in derogatory manners need to take a look at themselves really , in my opinion

rawlikesushi · 06/06/2020 15:37

"it's not her fault if she was born with low intelligence."

No but if you're going to shout your poorly-informed, offensive opinions at others then they reserve the right to laugh at you for it.

You are really working hard to defend someone who is rude, entitled and offensive. What would we call a rude, entitled, offensive man? Why is Karen any worse?

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 06/06/2020 15:38

If you google Brad memes you'll find a ton

I'm sure you find anything from googling, but the fact remains, the "brad meme" is not used regularly on social media to the same extent and with the same viciousness as Karen is. Not only is this meme directed solely at women, its apparently also ageist AND ableist since IQ is something we are born with and cannot help.

SquashedSpring · 06/06/2020 15:40

rawlikesushi

Why the need to use a woman's name to describe those behaviours?

Goldenbear · 06/06/2020 15:41

Tbh it sounds a bit 'dim-witted' and anti- intellectual to use an armoury of sound bite memes to deride individuals that have problematic personality traits and opinions, why not just formulate proper arguments to challenge their behaviour? This is why I want my 13 year old to think about how he uses language as it is lazy and unimaginative to talk in memes!
