Are we clapping today or not?

Feeling jittery. Neighbour is a paramedic and takes it all very seriously. What if she steps out and no one else turns up?

I hope 8pm passes without any awkwardness or cringe.

Our street have been at it full monty but last week was the final one.

I wouldn't bother, OP.

longtompot · 04/06/2020 18:05

@Felifox

You can have too much of a good thing, it has less meaning. There is no Clap for Carers spot on BBC tonight
Though the programme that's on just before 8 finishes at 8.05 pm, so I don't know if it's in that or not.
Gwenhwyfar · 04/06/2020 18:05

Last week was seen as the last clap because the person who started it said so.
However, that person doesn't own it and didn't really start it anyway - it was already happening on the continent so if people want to carry on, it's up to them isn't it?

Chig · 04/06/2020 18:05

I hope not. I haven’t clapped once and had one of my neighbours knocking my door asking me why not. Enough now.

EatsShootsAndRuns · 04/06/2020 18:09

We've never clapped. It's seemed to us that those of our neighbours that have clapped, and been most vehement about the need to clap have been the ones to also have visitors over during lockdown, parties, travelling all over to visit family, not social distancing, hugging... Hypocrisy at its best.

Thelittleweasel · 04/06/2020 18:23

Slow handclap for DC?

@Redolent

sheregone · 04/06/2020 18:25

I thinks its ended so I wasn't planning too

KaptenKrusty · 04/06/2020 18:26

Why do you care what the neighbours think of you? Do you spend your life doing things to please them? Ffs don’t go out if you don’t want to

BlueJava · 04/06/2020 18:27

No clapping for us tonight - but then we've not done it any other night either!

ProsperTheBear · 04/06/2020 18:27

Well carry on if you want to but if something is someones idea then they do get to say enough is enough now.

ahem.. she didn't start it....

It comes from countries overseas who were on a stricter lockdown. At best, she ended up in social media for mentioning it was a good idea, she wasn't the only one.

It's ridiculously cringey to pretend we have one person in the UK who "started the clapping" weeks or months after others. Grin

DogInATent · 04/06/2020 18:30

Neighbour is a paramedic and takes it all very seriously.

The first time that popped into your head was the week you should have stopped.

Iamnotminterested · 04/06/2020 18:39

Nope, never have; as has been said many times over the past weeks, the hypocrisy of the loudest 'supporters' also being the ones breaking lockdown rules gets right on my tits. Cunts.

WanderingMilly · 04/06/2020 18:46

I fully support all our brave NHS workers who have kept going through this for us all, but no, I haven't once been out clapping and shan't start now. And yes, it was supposed to be last one last week.
Fortunately no-one else does it round here so it hasn't been an issue throughout lockdown, so they are hardly going to come out tonight either....

Redolent · 04/06/2020 18:49

@Helpmyhair2019

Just as I was starting to be relieved I no longer had to clap, my neighbour has just written on the WhatsApp group that even tho the clapping is over shall we all carry on going outside at 8pm every Thursday as a social thing. Ffs! At least with the clapping I could just clap and smile and go back indoors. Now they want me to actually have conversations every Thursday. I’m aware this makes me sound like a right miserable cow but I’ve had enough! Perhaps a good sign is not one neighbour has replied yet!!!
Omg this would be my worst nightmare Grin

Radio silence on the group.

Yeah sure, and they can continue to encourage the competative noise making and FB likes and shaming too?
It has no meaning now, how long do you intend to continue it? Till next year, the next?

Aretheystillasleepbob · 04/06/2020 19:00

Not.

maxicheddar · 04/06/2020 19:12

Ugh, I hope not.

The whole thing has been a hypocritical wind up here as nice neighbours aren't clapping.

The arseholes that do just relish the chances for ASBO-free antisocial behaviour.. banging pots, whistling and shouting yobbishly, with cigarettes literally hanging out of their mouths. Angry

When they woke my really unwell DH last week I had to really fight my desire to tell them to fucking shut up so I hope they are done with it.

In theory it could be a lovely thing if heartfelt and spontaneous but when its forced or obligated or hypocritical then its just a sad wind up.

Longwhiskers14 · 04/06/2020 19:12

We've done it every week but last week was our last. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it does feel like the right time to stop.

Furrydog7 · 04/06/2020 19:17

I hope it was the last clap last week as i hated the Thursday night clap and i didn't even bother to do it after the first week. Before anyone jumps on my back i do support the nhs and other key workers. However what started out as something nice quickly became a noise competition and i saw a lot of shaming of people who were not doing the clap in local groups on facebook. Basically the clap became an excuse for low lives to bully those who had made the decision not to clap

justanotherneighinparadise · 04/06/2020 19:17

God no.

Anniegetyourgun · 04/06/2020 19:18

Oh, what a pity. 8pm every Thursday some kindly neighbour used to honk a horn to let us know it was time to close the curtains. So I always did. Though as I suppose it's nearly midsummer 8 is a bit early for it really. Perhaps that's why it's stopping.

sourcreamnchives · 04/06/2020 19:20

No more

GabsAlot · 04/06/2020 19:21

up to you free country ive never done it

Crunchymum · 04/06/2020 19:24

The woman who invented clapping said it should stop. Aye alright then.

To the poster with the BLM / kneel link from The Metro... that was yesterday Shock

grannyhorse · 04/06/2020 19:26

Brilliant if it does stop tonight. Will give the poor wildlife a break from being scared by fireworks
