Really hate too thick, too sweet baked beans. Gah.
Recipes? Your mother's killer recipe? Secrets? Tips? No food allergies/sensitivities/etc. Not vegetarian.

YABU - Nope. And if you don't have a slow cooker or Instant Pot you are screwed!
YANBU - Here's my fantastic recipe! Not too sweet! Try it! Check back! How'd it go??

Some of us just buy tins. lol. There are lots of different brands to try.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 03/06/2020 02:14

If anyone can tell me what they do to KFC baked beans to make them so tasty I'd be very grateful

Redroses27 · 03/06/2020 02:26

I add paprika to baked beans and tomato soup, I find it improves the flavour of the cheaper brands.

ShowPicturesOfLifeNotDeath · 03/06/2020 02:38

Heinz.

QuacksInTheDark · 03/06/2020 02:43

Get thee a tin of Heinz down tha neck!

DamnYankee · 03/06/2020 03:00

Ok. Tried some tinned.
Heinz down me neck sounds ok...and kind of MacBeth-ian!
Will do!

Just buy tinned, life is too short! Add some hot sauce and melt some cheese with them Wink

fassnk · 03/06/2020 03:11

Chop and fry off half an onion. Add tin of haricot beans, 150ml passata, squirt of tomato purée, 1 tsp mixed herbs, 1.5tsp smoked paprika, black pepper and a couple of tsps sugar if you want it. Cook for 5 mins. So yum, it's a recipe I got for weaning but discovered I love it too!

MsChatterbox · 03/06/2020 03:43

@GlummyMcGlummerson I think it's a bit of Bbq sauce.

whiteblue · 03/06/2020 04:13

whiteblue · 03/06/2020 04:15

Spellcheck ruined my spelling above. But you get the gist.

londonscalling · 03/06/2020 04:18

Depending on what we are eating them with, I add a large squirt of bbq sauce and a good amount of chilli powder to a
tin of baked beans.

mrsBtheparker · 03/06/2020 07:51

We stayed in a b and b in Northumberland where the owner made baked beans, they were wonderful, not too sweet but I can't recall how she did them! I know it started with haricot beans though, I'll try and find the recipe she gave OH.

Clawdy · 03/06/2020 08:19

Am I the only one who finds Branston Beans tastier than Heinz!?

I made these for the baby and felt very jealous once I'd tastes them!

Sussexbonfireviking · 03/06/2020 08:32

I ALWAYS add Chipotle sauce to mine

TheFuckingDogs · 03/06/2020 08:32

Google a recipe for proper from scratch Boston Baked Beans, I’ve never done it myself but it’s something I keep meaning to do

ChessieFL · 03/06/2020 08:34

@GlummyMcGlummerson try Heinz BBQ beans, they’re similar to the KFC ones

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 03/06/2020 08:38

Super easy. Get a jar of passata, a few tins of cannelini beans. Drain and wash beans. Heat passata, add plenty of salt, a decent dollop of tomato paste and some dried herbs. wash and drain the beans. Add them to tomato mixture, Simmer for a bit and you’re done.

If you like the sweeter style, add maple syrup or sugar to taste.

Trick is to get the ratio of beans to sauce right. You don’t actually need too much sauce. Just enough to accommodate however many tins you’re adding.

Westfacing · 03/06/2020 08:43

This doesn't help the OP but when I was in the US a friend made her version of Boston Baked Beans - don't know the recipe but it involved tinned baked beans with loads of brown sugar and tomato ketchup added, then simmered for ages. Delicious!

Nottherealslimshady · 03/06/2020 09:21

@Clawdy nope I totally agree! Heinz are watery and flavourless in comparison
