Really hate too thick, too sweet baked beans. Gah.
Recipes? Your mother's killer recipe? Secrets? Tips? No food allergies/sensitivities/etc. Not vegetarian.

YABU - Nope. And if you don't have a slow cooker or Instant Pot you are screwed!
YANBU - Here's my fantastic recipe! Not too sweet! Try it! Check back! How'd it go??

We make these at least once a month. They’re delicious and so easy to make. I don’t add the sugar just the treacle as found them too sweet otherwise.

@Clawdy I prefer Branson too.
Bought a ton of Heinz for the first time in years last week because the supermarket didn’t have any Branson. Didn’t enjoy them at all.

My absolute favourite -
Large sliced red onion softened down in olive oil. Once soft add a generous spoon of capers plus some of the caper brine. Then add Heinz baked beans to heat.
Sometimes it’s just capers added to a the beans.
Sharp tang of the capers cuts the sweetness perfectly.

My grandmother’s recipe, very straight forward (although time consuming) and cooked all over Greece:

Use pinto beans, they have the best taste (called xandres in Greek).
Soak in water for 24 hours.
Fry a chopped onion in olive oil.
Add beans, canned tomatoes and water.
Season with salt, pepper and dill.
Leave to boil in low heat adding a lot of water along the way.
Takes 6 to 8 hours to boil fully.

The relevance of the country being that in US people often make Boston Beans and other recipes that may include molasses, sugar, onion, fatty pork; and in UK usually tinned beans in tomato sauce.
