Are you doing anything to prepare for a second wave?

Historically we are going to get one. Seeing pictures of places rammed is scary.

So if so, what are you doing to prepare? If only to make another potential lockdown a bit easier.

I've been picking up a couple of extra tins a week and some UHT milk. I've also put some bits aside for the kids to keep them entertained.

I'm off to buy 500 toilet rolls.

BrieAndChilli · 31/05/2020 02:20

Keeping pantry stocked up. Am pretty stocked up on school and craft stuff.
Making sure medicine etc is stocked.

Things I hadn’t considered this time - kids fret grow. So will be buying trainers in next size up and putting aside making sure good winter coats and wellies, hats gloves scarves etc as next lockdown if it happened may be over winter.

NeverHadANickname · 31/05/2020 02:23

Like you I'm starting to add a couple of extra bits to the shopping, pasta, jars of pesto, tins etc. We were quite well stocked anyway and could have lasted a while just because I like to stock up on essentials but I am going to make a conscious effort to stockpile a bit going forward, for the next wave and the future.

NeutrinoWrangler · 31/05/2020 02:30

I'm trying to keep our pantry and freezer well stocked. I don't want to let anything run too low. It would be easy to become complacent now that most groceries are relatively easy to get, though unfortunately certain things are still scarce.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by how long our food stretched during lockdown, so I'm confident we can make do with what we have, even if it's not exactly what we'd normally prefer.

NeverHadANickname · 31/05/2020 02:32

That's a good point about hats, gloves and scarves. I might have a look to see if anywhere online has any now (I'm not in the UK) and get some wool in too.

ArriettyJones · 31/05/2020 02:33

Maintaining stocks of everything, maintaining personal lockdown for myself and DD (chronic health conditions), making significant career changes (hopefully).

Sobeyondthehills · 31/05/2020 03:17

The only thing I fucked up on was toilet roll, my area had none for a good two weeks, other than that I am good, I think.

The thing to remember is, we are probably not going to go into a second lockdown, they have managed to spin everything else, so its unlikely to happen, especially when families are going to have to make a decision between their health and paying for their bills, but that is the way this government have always worked

LovePoppy · 31/05/2020 03:34

I’m adding a little to my “pandemic pantry” weekly. I have a spreadsheet to make sure I don’t over do it.

I need to sort out my printer for kids school work. Otherwise, other than flour when we get lower, I’m in good shape.

aLilNonnyMouse · 31/05/2020 03:38

I'm stocking up on tinned and dry goods - I was unable to get food for 3 weeks near the start of lockdown (I'm shielding) and had to rely on takeaways constantly.

I've got some health issues that need treatment - I want to get the blood tests/GP visits out the way while it's "safer" so I'm going to do that. Also get the cats annual vaccinations and checkup sorted.

Outside of that I'm putting some cash away to buy entertainment products with - I'm expecting to be stuck inside my house for the better part of a year. I'm getting a stack of new video games for my birthday in a couple of weeks so I'll use those to stay busy for a few months - and I'll buy some new ones after they run out along with some new books and wool/cross stitch projects.

Rosebel · 31/05/2020 05:02

You don't need to prepare ffs. It's threads like this that send people in to panic mode and that only leads to chaos. Buy what you need, then the shops don't run out.
Although saying that husband is in charge of shopping and I have had to tell him to stop buying toilet roll!

ArriettyJones · 31/05/2020 05:16

Preparation is the opposite of panic, isn’t it? If everyone prepared for emergencies (of whatever sort) there’d be less panic when one happened, and a second wave is entirely predictable. Why would you prepare?

Buy what you need, then the shops don't run out.

Exactly.

LovingLen · 31/05/2020 05:23

Everyone should be prepared for at least 2 weeks anyway as you could have to self isolate at anytime.

YeahWhatevver · 31/05/2020 06:04

Enjoying our new found freedom while it lasts before lockdown 2 kicks in and we're all stuck at home againSad

caffeinebuzz · 31/05/2020 06:16

Keeping the pantry stocked and booking online grocery deliveries as soon as they come available 3 weeks in advance. At least that way if we have to isolate or supply chains break down again we won't be caught short.

Longer term, we were already hoping to move house but have got dedicated home office space near the top of our must have list now.

Woeismethischristmas · 31/05/2020 06:33

I've also been restocking the stuff we used up over lockdown. Bought a wholesale bag of flour and a big tin of yeast. We've been making bread and pizza. Cleaning stuff like dishwasher tabs, kitchen roll and loo roll I did a shop on amazon for a backup.

Mumoblue · 31/05/2020 06:38

Not going out. Lockdown isn't over for me.
I cant afford to stock up, but I'm not going to get complacent.

I've already been invited to a BBQ. Not likely.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/05/2020 06:40

No. Not once have I been unable to get what I need during this lockdown so there's no need for me to do any preparing.

To be honest I don't think there will be another lockdown like this anyway. We as a country can't afford it. It will be local lockdowns if anything.

Barnabyboyo · 31/05/2020 06:41

Thiere won’t be a second wave if people participate in test and trace. but a lot of people on Mumsnet seem to want a second wave going by their reaction to the programme.

WanderingMilly · 31/05/2020 06:48

Food prepping just in case. Toilet rolls! Gloves and masks, finally got a load more but they will disappear once it becomes the 'norm'.
I have everything else including plenty of clothes and cleaning products.

DomDoesWotHeWants · 31/05/2020 06:48

Looking at the news coverage of beaches yesterday the second wave won't be long arriving. Stupid, stupid people.

We make sure we have deliveries booked well in advance. Always 2 on the go.

AlternativePerspective · 31/05/2020 06:53

Fgs do we really need to start all this again? Hmm. The only reason why there were shortages in the shops was because of all this prepping.

There isn’t going to be a second wave and there isn’t going to be another lockdown.

The country can’t afford another lockdown anyway, but I am inclined to believe what many are saying in that the virus is likely to burn out or mutate into a much weaker strain.

history counts for 0 as science wasn’t as advanced back then etc etc. We’re not living in the early 1900’s now...

Ladywinesalot · 31/05/2020 06:54

I thought MN’s didn’t panic but? Grin

Honestly, YOU are part of the problem...

Why are you sticking on hats and gloves???
Shops will still sell them Hmm

Ladywinesalot · 31/05/2020 06:55

*stocking

Oh and were you one of the original panic buyers that ended up throwing out half the food because it went off when you didn’t use in time??

Onceuponatimethen · 31/05/2020 06:55

Yep - have restocked store cupboard back up so we have quite a lot of food in

Onceuponatimethen · 31/05/2020 06:56

Prepping isn’t panic buying - I won’t be panic buying because that’s the whole point of prepping
