Are you doing anything to prepare for a second wave?

Historically we are going to get one. Seeing pictures of places rammed is scary.

So if so, what are you doing to prepare? If only to make another potential lockdown a bit easier.

I've been picking up a couple of extra tins a week and some UHT milk. I've also put some bits aside for the kids to keep them entertained.

You don't need to prepare ffs. It's threads like this that send people in to panic mode and that only leads to chaos. Buy what you need, then the shops don't run out.

As they said in the Brexit threads, preparation is not panic buying. It prevents panic buying. We have a "just in time" retail delivery system. Someone buying an extra tin of soup today means another one gets added to the order sheet.

When everything kicked off in March I didn't even need to think about going to the shop because we were comfortably stocked up with everything, without needing to fight anyone for loo roll or tins, because I bought them when there was more than enough for everyone.

SomewhereEast · 01/06/2020 19:18

I WASN'T stocked up in March, just continued shopping in our usual supermarket (for us & occasionally for shielding friends) and never had to fight anyone for anything??? Admittedly DS had to put up without his favourite Pasta shapes (the horror), but it really wasn't a big deal.

pollyanna1962 · 01/06/2020 19:21

Definitely getting flour, caster sugar, icing sugar even stork, loo rolls, Heinz small tins which are still in short supply and tinned tomatoes etc too. Going to try get internet rigged up in a bedroom with a craft area for me ready and all my paints.

babybythesea · 01/06/2020 19:37

Somewhere east - it might depend where you live. After the beast from the east, it took over a week for us to be completely restocked as normal. I kept seeing things on the news saying things were back to normal - not down here they weren’t. Some things appeared quicker than others. We are very rural. On top of the days we were stuck in our village with no way of getting to the shops, it makes sense to be prepared.

Lottielouc · 01/06/2020 19:41

Bought little one a new winter coat and wellies in the sales & keeping stocked up on food and craft stuff. I think the next lock down will be harder so enjoying seeing people outside (With social distance and not rammed beaches that have narrow steps to access!) now.

Tubs11 · 01/06/2020 19:55

Now that retailers are set up to cope I'm not going to stock up on anything, but I'm going to prep educational packs. Kids went bad today so now I've breathing room to do that.

grifffendor · 01/06/2020 20:18

I don't stock pile, its selfish and takes food from everyone else just buy what you ned to see yourself for a week or two , there is enough food to around for everyone just remember DR and nurses need to eat too they be the ones they putting there lives at risk to treat you when get you sick. #bekind.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 01/06/2020 20:20

Atm I’m side eyeing my UK summer holiday and thinking it might be cancelled like my May term time one

canigooutyet · 01/06/2020 20:36

Preppers are complete different to panic buyers. A lot of us do it without realising, the bogof etc. Prepping is how I and many were raised.
They wouldn’t have been the ones with trollies full. Think of it like putting a few extra items in the basket for Christmas dinner.

Panic buyers are the ones that stripped shelves of food. And of course things came to a grind when we went into lockdown. Supermarkets still haven’t caught up, my delivery today still had too many replacements or simply out of stock.

Panic buyers are the ones that stripped online retailers like amazon of toilet roll.

Panic buyers went onto brag that they had also snagged weekly deliveries just because.

Elle1234 · 01/06/2020 20:43

Nothing, I honestly dont believe there will be another lockdown.
I tend to keep a decent supply of food anyway, however I will make sure I have an extra pack or two of loo roll in future! Whilst I dont anticipate a lockdown we could see similar shortages after brexit so I'll continue to be well stocked

LoveIslandVirgin · 01/06/2020 21:54

Whether it happens or not, I’m not buying more than I need at the moment. I’d never heard of Brexit boxes before it was mentioned on MN at the start of the pandemic! What on Earth were they for?

Nobody’s going to die without pasta or flour! We vary our diet so much because we have so many cookery books for inspiration, that we didn’t need anything the stockpilers nabbed.

One thing I did learn is that shopping in the fruit and veg aisle of the supermarket, when the hordes were stacking the baked beans and soup high in their trolleys, was a breeze!

Msmcc1212 · 01/06/2020 21:58

Not in prep for lockdown #2 but because it’s fab, we have a regular delivery of loo rolls from Who Gives a Crap. Recycled, wrapped in jazzy paper and profits go to building toilets in developing countries! 😁

I hadn’t really thought about prepping but may do now...

GinDaddyRedux · 01/06/2020 21:59

Chuckling at the posters on here rushing to use the word "pantry"...

SoupDragon · 01/06/2020 22:35

Why? Is it because it almost has the word "pants" in it?

fatimashortbread · 01/06/2020 22:35

I am keeping stocks up - if it’s not needed for a second wave it will do for no deal Brexit!

cyclingmad · 01/06/2020 22:41

Just saving up as much money as possible to ride through any job loss if it happens.

starlight13 · 01/06/2020 22:45

I just can't believe that people get through so many hats and gloves each year that it is 'a thing' to need to stock up on - what the hell do you do to them each winter that makes you unable to get some more wear out of them? Btw I do get that children lose them but I don't believe that we will be in full lockdown again (maybe localised) and if we are you won't need to be going outside for long anyway.

No second waves then, some of you were saying?

What is more worrying is that they class this as their second wave and their numbers are still lower than ours!

No one really knows what's going on in Iran, or what their true numbers are.
40somethingJBJ · 01/06/2020 23:45

The only thing I’ve struggled to get is flour, so I’m going to make sure, going forward, that I keep enough in stock. I always have at least 2-3 weeks worth of food in the house as a minimum as I’m disabled and have periods where I can’t get out the house, so it’s sensible to keep a bit extra pasta/sauce/frozen stuff/tins etc in stock just in case. I’ve not been in a shop since before lockdown, and I’m going to continue getting shopping delivered for the foreseeable, as I can’t deal with the queuing to get in shops. We’re certainly in no rush for data out and holidays - I’ll be happy if I can get a few days away in my caravan this year.

PorpentiaScamander · 01/06/2020 23:50

I'm getting a second freezer. I've only been able to get one online shop per month and struggle to get a months worth of food in the freezer so a second small one should help. Plus a lot of vegetarian stuff that my fussy pesce child will eat has been hard to get hold of. This way I can stock up on his food for if we need it.
I've always been a prepper anyway, the extra freezer space should just help.

MissConductUS · 02/06/2020 00:20

I love having a separate freezer in the garage. Get an upright, not the chest style. It's much easier to find things in an upright.

PurpleFrames · 02/06/2020 00:41

@LovePoppy
Can yyou share your spreadsheet?

It's an upright (luckily a relative was getting rid of theirs so I haven't even had to find the money for one). My step mum has a chest freezer. Its fab because it's so huge. But last time I went to look for something for her it took forever and I almost fell in I dont think I could afford to fill a chest freezer!
movinggoalposts · 02/06/2020 01:12

I was laughing at the woolly hats and then I remembered I wore mine constantly in the house for a couple of days in mid-March. It coincided with headaches, diarrhoea, shivers and shortness of breath but clearly wasn’t coronavirus as I had no cough or temp. Grin

BlackBucketOfCheese · 02/06/2020 01:20

Why can people just not get on and do their own thing? Why do they need to find an audience to run their lives by?

One of the funniest and more ridiculous things I’ve ever read on MN.
