Are you doing anything to prepare for a second wave?

Historically we are going to get one. Seeing pictures of places rammed is scary.

So if so, what are you doing to prepare? If only to make another potential lockdown a bit easier.

I've been picking up a couple of extra tins a week and some UHT milk. I've also put some bits aside for the kids to keep them entertained.

Also, I’m making the most of some of the restrictions being lifted and taking the DC out for picnics (all to places within an hour from home due to no toilets) and walks to different places so they can have a bit of variety in case we’re told to stay at home for an extended period again.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 31/05/2020 07:37

no idea how to "prepare"

Bluesheep8 · 31/05/2020 07:37

You don't need to prepare ffs. It's threads like this that send people in to panic mode and that only leads to chaos

Exactly Hmm

Bluesheep8 · 31/05/2020 07:38

And some people can't afford to buy extra of anything in order to prepare.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 31/05/2020 07:38

Can you all just calm down a bit on the 'pandemic pantries'!? Stockpiling lead to the shortages and now you're at it again. There's enough for everyone to order food as normal if you don't start stockpiling again.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 31/05/2020 07:38

i spose it might be a good idea to always have 2 weeks worth of food in the house but money is tight. we have soap, we have paracetamol, there are i believe groups to contact if you need food and are self isolating.

Aretheystillasleepbob · 31/05/2020 07:39

No other countries ( I'm discounting the insane Oz loo roll panic buying!) had empty shelves the way we did...

Ellabella222 · 31/05/2020 07:39

Other countries around the world, ahead of the UK, have come out of lockdown and there is no evidence of a second wave. Small localised spikes. No second wave. No evidence that it is inevitable.

MotorwayDiva · 31/05/2020 07:40

Second wave or not there are other reason to prep for, I have added additional tins and pasta this week as shelves full and want to ensure have enough at home if can't go out. Will buy flour and yeast if it ever comes back into the shops...

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 31/05/2020 07:40

i have been working throughout but dd is due to go back to uni, that is worrying. but less worrying than it was in March, otoh it wont stop me worrying.

AlternativePerspective · 31/05/2020 07:41

What more do you want by way of evidence? Spain and Italy and others have come out of lockdown a lot faster than us with even restaurants and cafe’s open again and they haven’t seen surges in the virus.

Besides which infection does not equal a second wave necessarily. Do bear in mind that the lockdown was never about eradicating the virus. Lockdown was only ever there to slow its spread so the health service could cope, which it has, even to the point that the nightingale hospitals proved unnecessary.

Truth is that if it stays around COVID will always be a risk, much as flu and norovirus (to think of just two) are every year.

Even if a vaccine is developed, people will still catch COVID and people will still die from it. Much as they still do every year from flu despite there being a vaccine.

This has never been about eradication.

itsgettingweird · 31/05/2020 07:41

I hadn't done anything but having watched the figures the past week I thought I probably should start a dry store again.

I'm also thinking about if I have to isolate to 2 weeks on track and trace.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 31/05/2020 07:41

@DomDoesWotHeWants

Looking at the news coverage of beaches yesterday the second wave won't be long arriving. Stupid, stupid people.

We make sure we have deliveries booked well in advance. Always 2 on the go.

Why do you think this? They weren't having group snogging sessions or spitting in each others faces, they're outdoors, most were observing some sort of distancing, infection levels are low anyway so there's unlikely to have even been cv present. They're not stupid, stupid people (although Im sure some are)....... they're just regular people trying to live some semblance of a life.

As to the main question, I'm doing absolutely nothing to prepare for a second wave. Everything was available as per normal, unless you needed 15 bottles of bleach in the house and suddenly became a manic home baker. Supply chains will have been strengthened and will be even more robust than usual now.

MrsExpo · 31/05/2020 07:41

We’re pretty well stocked but making sure the freezer and tinned stuff cupboard are as full as possible without going too mad. We’ve had a chat and decided to continue with our “lock down” life for a few more weeks, which basically means DH staying home apart from one short walk daily and me dong a daily dog walk (we live in a rural location so very easy to social distance), me shopping once a week with mask etc.

Whilst I’m as keen as everyone for this to end, I’m not convinced we’re out of the woods yet.

bonsaidragon · 31/05/2020 07:42

on MN some people won’t be happy until they and their families are all dead so they can say “told ya so.”

I don't think that MN has expanded into the after life yet, that's next year's update.

Sertchgi123 · 31/05/2020 07:44

FFS!

Raaaa · 31/05/2020 07:46

One thing I've been looking for but is constantly sold out is white vinegar to get slime out of the carpet but haven't seen any on the shelf for weeks

DomDoesWotHeWants · 31/05/2020 07:46

You obviously didn't see the photographs of Durdle Door. Have a look.

Why are people predicting a second wave? It’s guesswork

No, the scientists are saying it is too soon to ease lockdown.

Infection is still high. It is about the level it was at the start of lockdown. So how is it possible that people gathering together won’t start spreading it again? It isn’t a ‘second wave’ , it’s this one extended. This one is still moving so....

Infection reduced because of lockdown. Infection is still present, so what do you think will happen?

God out Gvt almost wilfully look at everyone else and then do the exact opposite of effective.

So in other UK countries, bigger groups can gather but from not more than 2 households. That’s sensible; keeps the risk within a household, where it would be if any one member caught it.

England: 6 people can gather, and they could be from 6 different households, each person infecting their household, or going in to a different gathering of 6 individuals.,,

ArriettyJones · 31/05/2020 07:50

Can you all just calm down a bit on the 'pandemic pantries'!? Stockpiling lead to the shortages and now you're at it again

No. You’re confusing prepping or provisioning, (which is long-term laying in of supplies) with last minute panic buying.

Two completely different things. The first is responsible and doesn’t cause shortages. The second is the opposite.

yearinyearout · 31/05/2020 07:50

Even IF there was a second wave, and another lockdown, there is no issue with food or toilet roll supplies. EXCEPT when people start talking about prepping and start a bloody stampede. Just like last time, people will be allowed to shop for food, as long as there's some left!

countchocula · 31/05/2020 07:50

I would assume some people on here have very unfulfilling lives and want to feel needed. A second pandemic means there's more to threat about online, extra shopping to prep and store, scarves and gloves to buy in bulk Confused. You get to say "I told you so" and the joy of these kinds of claims is they're so vague, you can claim that in most eventualities.

What constitutes a second wave? There will be a rise in cases, we are locked down currently so it's obvious that it will spread more once that ends. Lockdown was never about getting rid of the virus. And we are testing everyone now, so the number of new infections will seem high if you're comparing it to when we didn't test anyone in the community.

Referencing history as a reason is ridiculous. The data modelling we can do now is mind blowing, our medical and technological advancements put us in a totally different place. It's comparing apples and oranges.

By all means prep for your second wave, but do the world a favour and stop spreading misinformation and fear online whilst you do it.

Splodgetastic · 31/05/2020 07:51

A water purification system, the one thing no one ever seems to consider.

FlamingoAndJohn · 31/05/2020 07:53

@Barnabyboyo

Thiere won’t be a second wave if people participate in test and trace. but a lot of people on Mumsnet seem to want a second wave going by their reaction to the programme.
I don’t see how Test and Trace will work if people are catching it on crowded beaches, parks and public transport. (Granted the beaches and parks are less likely due to being outside etc)
