Are you doing anything to prepare for a second wave?

Historically we are going to get one. Seeing pictures of places rammed is scary.

So if so, what are you doing to prepare? If only to make another potential lockdown a bit easier.

I've been picking up a couple of extra tins a week and some UHT milk. I've also put some bits aside for the kids to keep them entertained.

I remember the same threads in February and people saying we were panic seekers. Having the stocks to NOT have to go to shops or use delivery slots for 6 weeks really made a huge difference to life and thats why I am now always fully stocked. I got the kids some winter bits this week and that should be enough. I will add some more matches to my stock and we opened some paracetamol so will replace it.

@Onceuponatimethen

Prepping isn’t panic buying - I won’t be panic buying because that’s the whole point of prepping
Exactly.

And people thinking there won't be a second wave live in cloud cuckoo land. Wishful thinking isn't reality. To avoid a second wave people have to act sensibly. Yesterday showed that they don't.

LakieLady · 31/05/2020 07:04

I hadn't thought about, tbh, but I'll make sure we have a few extra tins (especially tomatoes, couldn't get those for ages!) in, meat in the freezer and plenty of bog roll.

Actually, we have plenty of bog roll. I bought a pack of 16 only the other day, and as a roll lasts us 5 days, that's enough for 11 weeks!

Whenwillthisbeover · 31/05/2020 07:06

For me acting sensibly is the only way. Keeping my distance, not mixing unnecessarily, thorough cleaning and handwashing. Not touching surfaces when out where possible, such gates, styles, barriers etc carrying hand gel everywhere, wearing a mask in the supermarket.

I won’t be stocking up on anything, I didn’t before and the only slight change I’ve made is to Make sure I’m always 9 toilet rolls in front.

AlternativePerspective · 31/05/2020 07:09

And people thinking there won't be a second wave live in cloud cuckoo land. Wishful thinking isn't reality. To avoid a second wave people have to act sensibly. Yesterday showed that they don't. on MN some people won’t be happy until they and their families are all dead so they can say “told ya so.”

People on MN are practically slavering at the idea of a second wave hence why so many are encouraging people not to participate in track and trace. The more of this tripe I see the more it becomes obvious that they actually want a second wave.

The issue here was deliveries. There weren’t food shortages. The vulnerable have now been added to priority booking slots, many of the supermarkets have added their services to Deliveroo and such like.

And really, talking up what other people are doing doesn’t mean anything if you’re still being sensible. I mean, if others were jumping off a cliff would you go after them? No?

Even if there were a spike there won’t be another lockdown. We’ve got to the point where the consequences of lockdown are greater than the consequences of the pandemic.

People are going to have to live with this if it sticks around,. Statistically your chance of dying is negligible, and people with underlying health conditions have to live with the same risks from other illnesses all the time. But those with underlying health conditions can, if they want to, take their own precautions without being told what they can and can’t do, or following the herd because someone said they should.

WomanIsTaken · 31/05/2020 07:10

Not participating in social activity or visiting crowded places.
I am going back to teach as normal and DC are going back to school (so I can teach) so this feels like plenty enough potential exposure for us without adding day trips etc.

returnofthecat · 31/05/2020 07:10

I let everything run down last time on the basis I could just pop to the shops the next day, and then panic buying hit and I couldn't. I'm never waiting until the last toilet roll in the house to go out and buy more toilet roll again!

Ellabella222 · 31/05/2020 07:11

Why are people predicting a second wave? It’s guesswork. Might never happen, countries ahead of the UK who are coming out of lockdown have not seen this. Stop panicking and just be sensible.

WorriedAboutMom · 31/05/2020 07:14

I'm just making sure I don't run too low on things in case of a national/local lockdown or having to self isolate. We usually have a stock of tinned food & non food items anyway as I don't drive and don't live near supermarkets.

CarlottaValdez · 31/05/2020 07:16

What’s the rationale in getting woolly hats? Clothes were easy to get at every stage of this.

Aridane · 31/05/2020 07:18

Nope, not doing anything

Maybe there will be a run on wool hats as people lock down indoors and are trying to keep down heating costs????

I noticed that comment and thought if we are locked in, woolly hats won’t be needed!

I’ve had my order from Who Gives a Crap so I’m happy. I’ll just keep sensible stock levels at home. We had 3 you do adult dc at hone in this lockdown and wow did they eat and drink a lot. If there was another lockdown unless over Christmas itself I think they’ll all just stay in their uni towns do it will just be dh and me.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 31/05/2020 07:20

Joining for ideas!

Think i will keep couple extra bits in the house as i dont want to be stuck in the supermarket with my dc again waiting for them to put the loo roll out

YinMnBlue · 31/05/2020 07:21

I am continuing to maintain social distancing.

There is no logic at all in the government ‘rule generator’ so I am just doing what I can do to keep the infection from spreading.

MotherWol · 31/05/2020 07:23

It’s likely that DH and I will be wfh for a while longer, so I’m trying to make our home office setup as good as it can be. Sorting out a proper work area, getting a decent chair etc. As we’re not going back straight away we’ll have reduced contact with the outside world, which should reduce the risk of exposure, even after DD restarts nursery. Lockdown will lift but I don’t see us going back to normal straight away.

Raaaa · 31/05/2020 07:24

Not doing anything here. I've found the quiet time at the supermarket and just do a normal shop.
If there is a second wave that can be dealt with at the time I'm not going to sit around worrying about it now as it may not even happen.
I'm one of those idiots who you will see in a photo somewhere with my DP and DD, had a lovely day out yesterday in a public place, because were allowed and have weighed up the risk for us.

kistanbul · 31/05/2020 07:24

I’ve had at least two weeks supplies stored for the past eight years. It’s just good sense. It’s mystifying to me that even now people are arguing that it’s a bad idea.

When the lockdown hit, I didn’t panic buy and i didn’t over shop and mess up supply chains.

This - “The only reason why there were shortages in the shops was because of all this prepping.” - is such a dumb take. The only reason people panic bought was because they weren’t prepared!

Well the pandemic hasn’t finished, and we’ve not had to self isolate for 2 weeks so our self isolation supplies have never had to be dipped into.

It’s not like it’s gone any where and is suddenly restarting. Buy what you need and there’s enough for everyone.

zen1 · 31/05/2020 07:28

Just doing what I was before really to minimise the risk and making sure I have enough of everything in the house, particularly food and cleaning products.

Oly4 · 31/05/2020 07:31

Nope. I’ve been able to get everything I need in the first wave

ginghamtablecloths · 31/05/2020 07:33

I won't go berserk but I'll make sure I have sensible stocks in the house so that I don't run out. I'll continue with the hand washing and social distancing. We can only prepare for the worst while hoping for the best, can't we?

ArriettyJones · 31/05/2020 07:34

Why are people predicting a second wave? It’s guesswork.

The virus hasn’t been eradicated. There are still significant levels of transmission and new infection going on in the community. The easing of lockdown is bound to increase the infection rate. No vaccine is imminent. The government’s own scientific advisors are clearly concerned about how easily and quickly the R0 could increase...

What more do you want by way of evidence?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/05/2020 07:34

But there's no need to prep OR panic buy really. I did neither and have always been able to get everything I need. That's assuming you can physically go to the shops of course as some people will be shielding. The only things that disappeared for a while were pasta and loo roll.
