Hi.

New name obvs cos im in need of some advice.

Tonight I wanted to see something on my husbands phone and as i sat next to him he was closing down something called nordvpn. Now he seemed a little flustered before this when I asked him to look as said thing and was tapping away. So I haven't ever heard of nord but I know what a vpn is. I'm not gonna lie I've always wondered if he has some sort of hiding app cos he's cagey with his phone but only at times. So can anyone tell me what nord would be used for, how can I access it as I do know the code for his phone but it's not something I would ever have looked at and is this an app for sneaky little twats on chat apps. Thanks in advance!!!

I believe its a form of internet protection. My dd has been nagging us for it. Nothing sinister.

BippityBobbityBoo · 30/05/2020 23:02

I use it too, I’m more secure online if my ip is masked

GreyishDays · 30/05/2020 23:02

A VPN will just let you pretend to be in a different country. We use one to get Love Island when in holiday. DH uses it to research what google search results look like in countries he’s marketing to.
Can’t think how you could use it for anything dodgy as far as your relationship is concerned, but there might be something. Did he not say?

LeGrandBleu · 30/05/2020 23:03

I use NordVPN on my computer and Psiphon on my phone. A VPN just changes your IP address. It doesn't have hidden apps or files.

I usually pick Norway as a country and love it when they offer me ads which are totally incomprehensible to me.

For me it for privacy and security reason. I also use it when looking at airfares - well not now - as airlines recognise you when you come back and usually price increase at the second or third visit.

Solina · 30/05/2020 23:03

Yeah nord vpn is just to protect the internet. Also can use it to access other countires netflix as you can tell the app you are in a different country than you are really in.

BacklashStarts · 30/05/2020 23:04

I take it there’s back story here. It’s just a vpn, I use one to avoid giving off personal data like a fountain. Not in and of itself suspicious.

Miafey · 30/05/2020 23:04

Nothing odd or inherently suspicious about using a VPN.

Mascaramademehappy · 30/05/2020 23:05

We use NordVPN to access UK TV when we are abroad.

LouiseTrees · 30/05/2020 23:05

Yeh it’s nothing sinister and very well known. Does he do business from the house or hold any work data or numbers on his phone because those who are IT savvy set up VPN’s when either working or gaming for very legitimate reasons. It’s not a hiding app, it’s about creating a virtual network of linked devices which are safer because they are networked together and firewalls surround them so less chance of getting viruses externally transmitted into the devices.

Pacmanitee · 30/05/2020 23:05

It's just a VPN service provider. Many people use VPN now, mainly just out of a largely unfounded paranoia, but there's nothing inheritently suspicious about it. Of course he could be doing something sinister with it, but that alone doesn't suggest that. The fact that you would look through his phone because you know his code is creepy though.

Bluntness100 · 30/05/2020 23:05

I think if you think your husband is cheating on your and a “sneaky little twat” and you full intend to snoop on him then you’ve both got some major problems in your marriage.

Annettebee · 30/05/2020 23:06

It hides your ip address, my husband uses it to watch football.
People also use it to watch American tv etc

whilewewonder · 30/05/2020 23:06

No back story I googled it and it said it could be used to hide apps so I thought I'd ask a mass group of people that would tell me the truth. He works away sometimes but no major concerns we face time and all that.

HoomanMoomin · 30/05/2020 23:08

I used it couple of times to watch Netflix US. Nothing wrong with it.

Bluntness100 · 30/05/2020 23:08

Do you have some form in insecurity or paranoia issues going on? Your reaction isn’t quite right if there is no back story.

Nottherealslimshady · 30/05/2020 23:09

It's the fact hes hiding it from you that's the dodgy bit. It can be totally innocent, cant be a little bit dodgy- using it to get access to video streaming sites, can be used very criminally- access to other sites, or can be used to hide his internet use from you.
No one can tell you what hes using it for but him, you need to ask.

whilewewonder · 30/05/2020 23:09

I read this app daily and see so many similar stories that I thought I'd ask

BeepOpsiePie · 30/05/2020 23:11

While I agree that VPNs are used for plenty of innocent reasons, if he really was acting cagey about it and trying to shut something down fast then I imagine he was probably just watching porn and using a VPN for extra privacy. And Nord is a well respected one.

Now you know what a VPN is, why not just ask him honestly why he uses one.

whilewewonder · 30/05/2020 23:12

And yes I felt he was trying to hide it from me
So that made me feel a little 🧐🧐

TheTrollFairy · 30/05/2020 23:12

VPN usage is quite common even for ‘normal’ things like trying to shop an American brand from the UK (not all retailers will change their process for our GDPR rules)
Also used as others have said for the likes of Netflix (and I guess disney +) so you can access better shows. My guess is most VPN usage will be innocent but someone could also use it in order to search the dark web or similar.

DieSchottin93 · 30/05/2020 23:13

I used it when I was on my year abroad to watch UK catch up TV.

whilewewonder · 30/05/2020 23:14

I don't have an issue with porn he can crack on but when I googled it I read it was for hiding chat apps I was like ok I'll ask some other people anonymously as we don't have issues and i wanted to ask poems will would know what it's for.

OP posts:
shinyredbus · 30/05/2020 23:15

It’s just something to hide where you are - I’m always somewhere in Scandinavia 😂 I get to watch American stuff that way.

Miafey · 30/05/2020 23:17

I dont really understand how you could use it to hide chat apps (not saying you can't, but how does that work?)

ScrumptiousBears · 30/05/2020 23:19

Whilst there's plenty of Innocent reasons to have it there are also plenty of not so innocent reasons to have it. If it masks your IP address you are very difficult to be traced when doing "things" on the internet.

Personally it's the fact he was flustered that suggests he wasn't just accessing US TV etc.
