Hi.

New name obvs cos im in need of some advice.

Tonight I wanted to see something on my husbands phone and as i sat next to him he was closing down something called nordvpn. Now he seemed a little flustered before this when I asked him to look as said thing and was tapping away. So I haven't ever heard of nord but I know what a vpn is. I'm not gonna lie I've always wondered if he has some sort of hiding app cos he's cagey with his phone but only at times. So can anyone tell me what nord would be used for, how can I access it as I do know the code for his phone but it's not something I would ever have looked at and is this an app for sneaky little twats on chat apps. Thanks in advance!!!

I don't know I've never used a vpn it's just what I read when I searched it,

I really doubt he'd be doing anything illegal he lives by the rules and is pretty boring. Wouldn't surprise me if it was for porn but I really don't give a shit about porn and he knows that.

Using a VPN is not the issue. His secretive behaviour is. If he had nothing to hide, why couldn't he just explain to you what it is??

whilewewonder · 30/05/2020 23:25

To Be be fair I didn't ask as I've always read on here that it's best to bide your time if you see something and you wonder what is it. Maybe I should Have asked.

Honestly nothing I’d be concerned about. I had it to watch Australia’s Got Talent Grin

My ex used a VPN thinking it would hide the chat room app he was accessing.

His iphone battery still showed me what he was doing.

It won't mask what he's doing on his phone.

MotherOfDragonite · 30/05/2020 23:48

I have NordVPN for security reasons because I often connect to Wifi in cafes and public libraries and want to be more secure. My best friend has a work VPN which they are told to always use to connect to their work emails and network. Very mundane as far as I'm aware. Why don't you ask him?

Straycatblue · 30/05/2020 23:49

I think another reason it can be used (might be totally wrong) , is to circumvent if you are banned from a forum or dating site or any site, that has either banned you or only allows you to be there under one username, .... they know its you from your IP address but using VPN can hide your ip address so that you can join under a different name/user name and have multiple profiles.

ToothFairyNemesis · 30/05/2020 23:50

I use it to watch US Netflix.

MetalMidget · 30/05/2020 23:54

I use VPN for a bunch of things, including accessing content from streaming services that aren't available in the UK.

billy1966 · 30/05/2020 23:57

I use it to watch a streaming service.

Nancydrawn · 30/05/2020 23:57

In addition to streaming, etc., a VPN should generally be used when you're using any public wifi. So if you're in a coffee shop, a hotel, a train, whatever, you should ideally be using a VPN to make your connection more secure. So, for example, mobile banking on public wifi without a VPN is unwise. If he commutes, travels for work, etc., it's certainly something I'd expect.

My guess is also porn, though.

You literally said you wanted to know how to access it in your opening post. So yes, you seem to have no qualms about invading his privacy.
wildcherries · 31/05/2020 00:19

Nothing wrong with using a VPN, doesn't have to mean he's up to anything.

lojoko · 31/05/2020 00:21

We use it at work to sign in to IP locked services.
