"The Birds" 😱

It takes a lot to shock me - I watch a lot of horror/scary films.... but in the sense of a film staying with me for days because it's been disturbing/unsettling - it's not always what would be classed as "horror" - it's just the subject matter/portrayal is very disturbing.

I recently watched The Stoning Of Soraya M - definitely stayed with me afterwards and was very difficult/infuriating to watch - especially when you consider the mindset and practice still goes on... the film itself is set in the 80's (it's based on a true story). Worth watching though, if for no other reason than to honour the wishes of the person who risked her own life to get the story out there to raise awareness.

I agree with those who said Eden Lake - as horror films go, it really is horrible - utterly vile - and very disturbing.

Am noting a few recommendations on here myself to check out. I like powerful films.

IamPickleRick · 31/05/2020 00:54

Suspiria (original)
Antichrist
The Swimmer

IamPickleRick · 31/05/2020 00:55

Also The Who’s Tommy which I saw much too young.

Tillygetsit · 31/05/2020 01:00

Not really a horror film but Donnie Darko stayed with me for years. Watched it again recently with dh who'd never seen it. Just a brilliant film imo.

boatyardblues · 31/05/2020 01:05

DH and I watched ‘The Divide’ (post-apocalyptic set-up, 9 strangers trapped in a New York basement bunker, Lord of the Flies on steroids). It unsettled us both so much, we were still talking about how unremittingly grim it was a week or so afterwards. It left me with a horrible bleak feeling that took several days to lift and DH said he felt the same. Horrible grubby film.

I watched Breaking the Waves when it first came out and that left me with an uncomfortable feeling, like I’d been complicit in bystanding a really unpleasant abusive relationship.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer stayed with me for ages. Bleak, and then some.

Kill Bill. My last Quentin Tarantino film. DH goes on his own whenever one is released.

These days I swerve stuff that I think will be unpleasant, regardless of how “must see” and lauded it is by the critics.

gah2teenagers · 31/05/2020 01:08

Definitely The Road and The girl next door. Very disturbing. DH says the Nightmare on Elm Street Films. DD says A Serbian Film which is worse than The Human Centipede however unbelievable that seems.

AltheaVestr1t · 31/05/2020 01:13

The Orphanage. I don't think I've ever fully recovered!

Sunshinesky1981 · 31/05/2020 01:43

The Woodsman with Kevin Bacon.

Not a horror film, but horrific. He plays a recently released pedophile who makes friends with a young girl. You go from being horrified and tense watching what's unfolding, but in other parts where he is just trying to find a job and struggling with life, he acts it so well you almost catch yourself feeling sorry for him, before being back to horror when you are reminded of what he is and what he has done.

Its amazingly well acted, and leaves you feeling your emotions have been through a spin cycle

Spudina · 31/05/2020 01:44

Melena
And more votes for:
Come and see
Audition
Buried
Ring (the original Japanese film)
The Orphanage
Hostel
Requiem for a dream

Aswad · 31/05/2020 02:07

Glad someone said Mother! Too
The platform (subtitles)

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 31/05/2020 02:09

Apostate disturbing but so realistic

Sloeginclub · 31/05/2020 02:11

These are not horror but two films i thought about a lot for days after watching and still remember years later - Rabbit Proof Fence (true story) and Gallipoli (true events of course).

DPotter · 31/05/2020 02:13

Some old ones as I've definitely grown away from weird / disturbing films
Red Shoes - Moira Shearer I think starred
Seconds - Rock Hudson - weird /sad
Event Horizon - definitely scary
Perfect Sense with Ewan McGregor - warning possible a bit too close to home at the moment as its about a pandemic. Good film- dark dark ending

Happynow001 · 31/05/2020 04:36

@PennyNotSoWise
Amazing book, and a great film adaptation. Kathy Bates was just made for that role.
Yes she was utterly brilliant - and quite scary enough for me, in that film. I must watch it again soon.

She was also good in "Fried Green Tomatoes" - another one for this list.

Happynow001 · 31/05/2020 04:42

And YY to Seven and Shawshank Redemption - I must have watched it at least half a dozen times.

What about "Along came a spider" also with Morgan Freeman? Another one I've seen several times.

Happynow001 · 31/05/2020 04:47

@Destroyedpeople
A movie the name of which escapes me set in LA in 'the old days ' starring Jolie as a working single parent whose kid goes missing...then the aurthorities return a boy to her but its a different kid.....directed by Eastwood I believe. Very disturbing.
Do you mean Changeling?

Happynow001 · 31/05/2020 05:03

The Sixth Sense (The "I see dead people" movie". Excellent

Silence of the Lambs.

Tellmetruth4 · 31/05/2020 05:04

The Others really freaked me out but Shutter Island genuinely unsettled me. I will never watch it again.
