To think an outdoor cinema screening at night is antisocial?

I might be unreasonable. I have a fussy baby that still wakes up several times a night for boob, so my tolerance for noise at night is not great...

My neighbours are gathered on the street outside having an outdoor film screening. Projector aimed at side of house, sound coming from speakers set up. Just had to ask them to turn it down as can hear it in my bedroom, despite windows being shut and white noise machine going (see note re fussy baby).

So is setting up a cinema on the street out front at night kind of antisocial, or am I being unreasonable?

God no. I'd be telling them to turn it off! Don't be polite about it, they haven't given you any consideration.

My DD has outdoor films sometimes, but they wear headphones so the neighbours aren't disturbed.
How did they respond when you asked them to turn it down?

It’s a nice idea but not nice for their neighbours. They should’ve started earlier really, timing it so they weren’t still going at nearly midnight. Or sorted headphones at the very least.

Selfish behaviour- they should have started the film earlier or rented some of those silent disco headphones

If it’s a one off then I’m not sure it’s anti social. Just an annoyance. If it’s not over by 1 am call the councils environmental department. Or the police if it’s very disturbing. One film might be over in 2 hours?

I’d be out there screaming at them to be honest! And throwing paint over the projector.

It wasn't a one off. Happened about two weeks ago and I cranked up the white noise and didn't say anything as I figured we'd all been locked inside for so long that people want to let off steam.

It's very annoying but probably not antisocial if it's a one off.

In one of the DIY FB groups, someone posted their outdoor cinema set up and everyone was asking for details so they could create their own.

All I could think was WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS? Like we need more ways for neighbours to make noise!!

Samsung have started selling outdoor TVs. I'm thinking of buying a boat and living offshore!

Our neighbours were projecting my daughters favourite film in their back garden, at a reasonable volume, when they surely must have known it was fairly inconsiderate given it was 9pm and two hours past her bedtime. Thank god my daughter wasn't woken (I tend to leave her window open a little for some ventilation) as the chances of getting her to go back to sleep when she could hear her favourite songs would have been near on impossible. Isn't the first time the neighbours have been inconsiderate though, so imagine they will be making it a regular Friday evening thing 🙄

Of course it's antisocial from the 1st time!

When people chose to live in a built area, they accept there are rules and you have to take neighbours in consideration.

It doesn't matter if you have a baby or not at all, you should be entitled to peace and quiet. It's worst in the lockdown, you have nowhere to go to escape the racket!

unfortunately, that won't achieve anything. Times of the local police being able to deal with nuisance neighbours is long gone.

You could report to the council, but you also have to report problems when you try to sell- if you are renting, go for it!

Unfortunately for anyone with small children I think there is likely to be a lot of disturbed sleep over coming months with everyone meeting up with their 6 friends in the garden for BBQs etc

If your neighbours don't need sleep and bother you in the evening, surely they won't mind hearing a young child under their window from 6am.

I think it sounds fabulous if its before 9/10pm but I agree at nearly midnight its taking the piss.

At near midnight - yes they are extremely unreasonable.

However other people shouldn’t have to make no noise so as not to affect 7pm bedtimes for children on long summer evenings.

I think that yes yabu if this is something which has bonded a number of neighbours.
Obviously, the issue will be it needs to be dark enough to project.
My suggestion would be to ask they turn the volume down a notch and use subtitles.
Obviously after 11pm it needs to not be excessively loud.

The problem with this new craze is that at any time it is warm enough in the UK, it gets dark very late. So noise is bound to go on til late.

I’ve been to outdoor cinema screenings in parks and the sounds and locations of the screens have to be so carefully balanced so as not to disturb local residents, or the council won’t let them happen any more. So on that basis I don’t think you’re BU - if the commercial companies have to accommodate certain rules for showings then domestic set ups should be required to do the same.

As a one off I’d be inclined to let it go but it’s really not on if they’re planning on doing it regularly.

Took ages to get to sleep last night as a large group were in the garden of the house in front of ours. They were still being loud past 1 am, sadly we've definitely got more of this to come.

The very thought of this gives me the rage. I hope this doesn't catch on round my way.

There seems to be less and less consideration for others these days. I don't get how someone can think that their right to listen to music/watch a film or whatever trumps the rest of the street's right to a bit of peace and quiet any time, especially late in the evening.

I think I need to move to somewhere remote where I have no neighbours within 3 miles.

And why in the STREET, ffs? In your own garden is one thing, but in a public space?
