To think an outdoor cinema screening at night is antisocial?

I might be unreasonable. I have a fussy baby that still wakes up several times a night for boob, so my tolerance for noise at night is not great...

My neighbours are gathered on the street outside having an outdoor film screening. Projector aimed at side of house, sound coming from speakers set up. Just had to ask them to turn it down as can hear it in my bedroom, despite windows being shut and white noise machine going (see note re fussy baby).

So is setting up a cinema on the street out front at night kind of antisocial, or am I being unreasonable?

Take your stereo out into your front garden and play music while they're watching the film.

Music over a movie would be very distracting, they'd soon get the hint.

Likethebattle · 30/05/2020 08:00

Our neighbours are all showing off harden cinemas on Facebook although they all use headphones

canigooutyet · 30/05/2020 08:05

The longer we remain on lock down, the more things like this will happen.

The sun is out, social distancing for outside has been restricted and there’s a lot of people at home who don’t have to get up the following day.

You can always give the council noise people a call. Even better if you call them whilst the noise is happening.

superram · 30/05/2020 08:08

I noticed a Facebook acquaintance was doing this yesterday-completely selfish.

NOTANUM · 30/05/2020 08:22

It's very antisocial.
My enjoyment of glamping was destroyed by a family doing this. We wanted to get to bed by 11pm so we could go out sightseeing by 10am. They wanted to gather the entire campsite outside their tent to watch a film until midnight while getting trolleyed on gin cocktails.
I am never going glamping again.

cologne4711 · 30/05/2020 08:57

Unfortunately for anyone with small children I think there is likely to be a lot of disturbed sleep over coming months with everyone meeting up with their 6 friends in the garden for BBQs etc

Not just small children, some adults like their sleep too Angry

FGS if you want to watch a film watch it on your (indoor) TV!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 30/05/2020 09:32

In the circumstances you’ve described you are not being unreasonable

If people have A set up where the neighbours can’t see or hear anything then i think thats fair enough

But that probably doesn’t happen often

TimeWastingButFun · 30/05/2020 09:38

On your house? That's a bit cheeky, just say no next time - a young baby is a very good reason to say no.

Chillipeanuts · 30/05/2020 09:40

Did they ask everyone on the street how they felt about it?
Bloody cheek if they didn’t.

YinMnBlue · 30/05/2020 13:58

Just check with the site rules whether this sort of nonsense is allowed.

Unfortunately taking a projector camping started to become a ‘thing’ over the last few years. But only allowed in certain types of site.

Purpletigers · 30/05/2020 14:22

Total nightmare for you . I’d hate this . What wrong with watching a film in your house . Dicks

cologne4711 · 30/05/2020 14:34

There was an article in the Times recently about noise pollution and how seriously it affects our health. I don't think it is taken seriously enough eg incessant muzak in shops etc and this sort of thing (outdoor TV, cinema, late night parties outside) just shouldn't be allowed.

Soubriquet · 30/05/2020 14:42

Early evening, fine! Even fun

After 9...taking the piss

howlatthetrees · 30/05/2020 15:32

Abouttimemum · 30/05/2020 15:41

I absolutely hate this. Neighbours quite a way from us frequently play music in the evening and it booms around the street. I just know why people have to be so fucking loud. Play the music, but so you can hear not so I can hear it.
So yes it irks me, even before I had kids.
Now I do have a baby it irks me even more.
Not as much as people setting off fucking fireworks in DAYLIGHT during clap for carers. Bastards.
Honestly have no idea why people obsess over making loud noise!

Pipandmum · 30/05/2020 15:44

If I was to do that I'd give several days warning and be mindful of any objections.

Namechangedforthis1357 · 30/05/2020 16:27

It's easier to see a film when it's darker and people need to start socialising again for their own mental health and will only be able to do this outside.
So over the coming months, whilst still adhering to the rules, people may make a bit more noise.

They won't be enamoured with your offspring wailing at all times of the night - by your very own admission have a fussy baby that still wakes up several times a night.

Just think of the may years ahead of:
the banging of balls against fences/walls
balls over fences
FUCKING TRAMPOLINES
Screaming/screeching of kids 'just playing'
Insert here all the other thousands of things your kids will do that will inconvenience your neighbours over the coming years which they will tolerate because it's kids 'just playing'.

Let them watch a movie ffs.

UnderTheBus · 30/05/2020 16:30

A one off at 8pm, I probably wouldn't mind.
More than once at midnight, definitely not OK.

Nanny0gg · 30/05/2020 16:34

SorrelBlackbeak · 30/05/2020 16:39

If it's projector showing the film, it isn't dark enough to work until after 9.30 so a lot of films will still be going at 11. However, not to have headphones is completely unacceptable.

We have a garden cinema, it's screened by trees from our neighbours and we have a silent disco headset and headphones so completely silent.

And of course when OP's baby cries after MIDNIGHT! it does so silently!

Nanny0gg · 30/05/2020 20:53

OFGS

A baby crying is in no way comparable to deliberately making noise outside that disturbs all the neighbours at midnight!
