AIBU?

Was I AIBU to walk out of supermarket.

I went to a supermarket which isn't my usual one today. There was a queue outside, but it moved pretty fast and was ably managed by staff who were also helpfully cleaning trollies. All well and good. However, inside was a different matter, it felt really busy and barely any of the customers (the majority of which were waring face masks) were adhering to the social distancing rules. I had a woman reach round me to get something and people were passing really close.

I got to the end with of an aisle which was blocked by 3 members of staff 2 of the large trollies they use to stack shelves. I couldn't safely pass so I turned around and tried to go up the next aisle which was empty and was loudly told off my a member of staff for not following the arrows, I tried to explain that I couldn't get up the other aisle but he just walked off. At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out. Was I unreasonable.

Some aisles are busy. The 1 way aisles are a pain as the things I want are usually at the wrong end for rapid shopping so I go up aisles I don't need to get to the one I want. You should have just found an aisle that was empty going the right way and omitted the convenient one. It would have been quicker than finding another shop.
Agree with the face to face contact for 15 min comments. You can't say you could never get it from someone transiently passing closer than 1m to you but it's very unlikely.

I've heard it all now! 'The government told me to strop and leave the shop.' Yep. The government just told people to give me all their money. PM me for my bank details Grin.

Not unreasonable OP. I think I would have done the same.

You need to be within 2 metres of someone for 15 minutes to have a chance of catching the virus. You do know that don’t you?

This is absolutely false. The 2 m and 15 minutes are a general guide formulated by scientists to reflect,on average, the most likely conditions for transmission. They use it to prevent and identify enough (not all) cases to limit the wider impact.

You have a higher chance of catching the virus the closer you are to someone and the longer you spend with them. 2m/15 mins has been chosen as a guide since something specific and practically doable is needed for instructions to the public, and for delineating track and trace efforts. It is designed to prevent or identify most, not all cases as I said.

Chris Whitty said yesterday that when outside at distances greater than 2 m risk is low, but not zero by any means. You seem to think that if someone highly infectious coughs right in your face inside, and you breathe it in, it's okay because it wasn't for 15 minutes? Are you under the impression that the virus particles carry little stopwatches?

They probably thought they didn't need to explain this, as it is so blooming obvious. Clearly they do. Surface transmission is another issue.

I’m sure it is a thing, I’ve just never had it or know what it is Grin I’ve googled it and gotten a load of recipes to make it but nothing tells me what to DO with it

People have stopped pretending to social distance or follow the arrows entirely in our big Tesco.

What's been particularly surprising and annoying for weeks is the Tesco staff wearing 'keep 2m away shirts' as they walk around in groups practically arm in arm. oh the irony.

And apparently when a Tesco employee complained herself about the lack of distancing amongst staff, she was told to get over it or go home. She went home.

Chiyo Yes! Like jam. I want to ask if you're American, but then you use the word 'jam' which tells me you're not.

YANBU.

You can't do much about other customers, but staff shouldn't be giving you bullshit. And blocking one way then harassing you from going the other way is bullshit.

at the beginning of lockdown, people were more scared, so they were following rules more strictly, being more careful.
but recently I've noticed (maybe last 2weeks now), people are more relaxed, too confident, and not bothered and becuse of that careless.
I find shops more busy now, and I think shops are letting too much people in so social distancing it's even more difficult.

The supermarkets seem to make a big show at social distancing in the queuing system and then at the checkout, but it's a free for all inside. Oh ok well let's get the staff on minimum wage to challenge people in store and receive verbal and possible physical abuse shall we. I used to work in a supermarket before I changed to care and people were bad enough before the pandemic.

AFAIK if there's any chilled or frozen goods in an abandoned trolley they would go straight in the bin as they don't know how long it's been out That's 100%accurate. So the OP has cost yhem money plus potentially costing whoever put her shopping back because it was beneath her to do so their health. After all, the minions in the shops are nothing to the public so who cares however exposed they are!

Yanbu OP. Ignore the fuckers. Every time I go into Sainsbury’s there’s members of staff in groups talking, customers walking too near me and people just generally not giving a shit.

I didn’t see anyone mention lemon curd?! Did I miss something?

I think that's just par for the course if you want to go to the shops
Some people I know are being very cautious and only get deliveries
I prefer shopping myself and think the risk of catching the virus from someone getting a bit close in a shop is very small ( non existent)

Zaphodsotherhead · 29/05/2020 21:46

Go to smaller shops.

I work in a very small local shop. We have 7 people in at a time, a one way system and markers on the floor to keep people 2m apart. I've heard that the big supermarkets are just a free for all once you get through the door, but the small shops, like ours, are enforcing the regulations, because it's easier to keep an eye on 7 customers, as opposed to 70.

It does make laugh that we queue outside 2m apart then literally rub of each other in the shop.

I’m totally relaxed now about Covid. I keep my distance but am not one bit bothered if someone comes close to me.

Oooh I like lemon curd....

Seriously though the chances of catching coronavirus because someone walked past you in a shop is miniscule. If it was really that contagious the R value at the height of the crisis would have been closer to a hundred than 3! Most cases were spread between close family members, friends and work colleagues.

In your shoes I'd have just finished my shopping, and washed my hands afterwards.

I'm not saying coronavirus isn't a serious issue but there's an element of hysteria about all this now.
