Was I AIBU to walk out of supermarket.

I went to a supermarket which isn't my usual one today. There was a queue outside, but it moved pretty fast and was ably managed by staff who were also helpfully cleaning trollies. All well and good. However, inside was a different matter, it felt really busy and barely any of the customers (the majority of which were waring face masks) were adhering to the social distancing rules. I had a woman reach round me to get something and people were passing really close.

I got to the end with of an aisle which was blocked by 3 members of staff 2 of the large trollies they use to stack shelves. I couldn't safely pass so I turned around and tried to go up the next aisle which was empty and was loudly told off my a member of staff for not following the arrows, I tried to explain that I couldn't get up the other aisle but he just walked off. At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out. Was I unreasonable.

It's your choice to vote with your feet and walk out. I vote with my feet by not going in shops I think are too expensive or busy in the first place. It's their loss, not yours, except that you might have a long queue elsewhere too.
I only shop at times of the day I think will be quieter to reduce my chances of bumping into people due to overcrowding.

You're quite right, if you feel uncomfortable then leaving is the best thing to do. I think supermarkets have made such a big deal of the trolley handle cleaning, sanitizer etc but it's a free for all inside.

Wow so a member of staff had to go handle all your shopping and put it back with people also trying to shop or the shop has to waste a load of food. How unbelievably fucking rude!

You have to be in contact with someone for about 15 minutes to contract this.

Best you not go into shops at all.

This sums it up completely, everything is getting fucking ridiculous and I have had enough. Don’t go out if you’re so damn worried! We went to the playground today, it was amazing and my daughter had the best time😊😊. Sanitizer before and after!

Re gloves, yes of course the same pair of gloves will potentially spread germs in the same way your unwashed hands do. Why wouldn't they?

While you are going round the supermarket, your hands will do that anyway as will the gloves. The advantage of the gloves is that you may be reminded not to touch your face, and also that you can remove them before getting into the car and touching the steering wheel etc. You don't have the option to wash your hands in the car park.

Many people who use gloves in a sensible way know exactly what the gloves have touched and would never regard them as 'clean hands', that would be just stupid. Yes, they need to be changed to become 'clean' in that. For situations where that applies you get through a lot.

The chances of catching it in many other cirumstances are much lower, and no one should suggest that the statements above encourage panic. Surely though we can reassure people without having to state things which are untrue and may lead to dangerous misunderstandings.

Why do we have to either panic when someone passes us, or say that you cannot catch it without being near someone for 15 minutes? Why can we not have a realistic and honest approach?

Well you may not need to be within 2m for more than 15 mins, but that is pretty much the NHS definition of 'close contact' for the track and trace system..
having face-to-face contact with someone (less than 1 metre away)
spending more than 15 minutes within 2 metres of someone
travelling in a car or other small vehicle with someone (even on a short journey) or close to them on a plane

So I'd say that spending less than 15 minutes within 2 metres probably isn't that much of a risk or they would have mentioned it on the NHS site?

I had suggested to my DH something similar... you know those dog leashes that say “friendly” or “nervous” etc.? I said to him we should get people versions for the situation at the moment.

I have been going to the supermarket at about ten o’clock on Friday/Saturday nights when they’ve been generally quiet to avoid the crowds. It’s probably 50/50 whether I’m avoiding coronavirus or having to fight my own impatience. In fact it probably leans more towards the latter!

This is why I've now switched to online shopping. You have to grab a slot two weeks in advance but it's worth it. My DP had to pop to Tesco yesterday to get a few bits and he said it was even worse than it had been when I last went 2 weeks ago and it will only get worse with people not bothering. I would suggest looking after yourself and your family and keeping yourselves safe with online shopping. I predict the second wave will be worse than the first because people have been lulled into a false sense of security, and I don't want me or my family to become one of the statistics.

The 2 m and 15 minutes are a general guide formulated by scientists to reflect on average the most likely conditions for transmission.

You have a higher chance of catching the virus the closer you are to someone and the longer you spend with them. 2m/15 mins has been chosen as a guide since something specific and practically doable is needed for instructions to the public, and for delineating track and trace efforts. It is designed to prevent or identify most, not all cases.

You are perfectly right my supermarket is the same .in fact I heard a woman on the phone at my local telling someone the queue was horrendous at her supermarket so she came to this one and no queue as they were just letting everyone in .The 15 minutes next to someone doesn't mean a thing if they cough or sneeze next to you has no one seen the videos of how far a cough or sneeze actually travels .
