AIBU?

Was I AIBU to walk out of supermarket.

I went to a supermarket which isn't my usual one today. There was a queue outside, but it moved pretty fast and was ably managed by staff who were also helpfully cleaning trollies. All well and good. However, inside was a different matter, it felt really busy and barely any of the customers (the majority of which were waring face masks) were adhering to the social distancing rules. I had a woman reach round me to get something and people were passing really close.

I got to the end with of an aisle which was blocked by 3 members of staff 2 of the large trollies they use to stack shelves. I couldn't safely pass so I turned around and tried to go up the next aisle which was empty and was loudly told off my a member of staff for not following the arrows, I tried to explain that I couldn't get up the other aisle but he just walked off. At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out. Was I unreasonable.

@Josette77

So you left your shopping in the trolley and left? I think that's rude.

I agree

TinyPigeon actually quite the opposite. I was sorry I asked more in a rolling eyes way, as in I remember the times when people were nicer.

@Witchcraftandhokum

Chiyo Really not looking for validation, my mother thinks I should have put my shopping back, as do Sparklingbrook and Joesette. Just wanted to see what people thought.

Yuk, no thanks on putting your things back.

You can't really get peeved because people were breaking the rules, you broke the rules and got told off.

I would have done the same OP.

Someone now has to put your shipping away, so no, you shouldn't have just left it, but similarly if you were uncomfortable then sure why not. Imagine working 10 hour shifts in a supermarket with customers invading your personal space everyday without any PPE.

AFAIK if there's any chilled or frozen goods in an abandoned trolley they would go straight in the bin as they don't know how long it's been out.

Realistically it isn't possible to maintain the 2m distance in supermarkets, you just have to accept that risk if you choose to go imo.

I don't know why a pp mentioned getting coughed at in the face - has that actually happened to anyone here? The point is, there is unlikely to be much risk from someone briefly leaving over beside you to grab a bag of flour off the shelf. Exposure of 15 mins or more is believed to increase the risk, hence why the app is only concerned with that time frame and us HCPs are encouraged to try and reduce each session of patient contact to below 15 mins.

OP I do think you were being a little dramatic and pretty rude to leave a trolley of shopping for someone else to have to sort.

I refuse to go shopping now as no one was social distancing and I cannot trust my pregnancy hormones to not tell everyone to get the fk away from me. YANBU

Wow so a member of staff had to go handle all your shopping and put it back with people also trying to shop or the shop has to waste a load of food. How unbelievably fucking rude!

You have to be in contact with someone for about 15 minutes to contract this.

Best you not go into shops at all.

This level of terror and stropping and anxiety is fucking ridiculous.

No. I probably would've done the same. But I have done pretty much what you did many times long before Covid 19. Just because I hate crowds and queues.

You must do what makes you feel comfortable and safe. Whatever that takes.

You were not being unreasonable and this sort of situation is frustrating for many.

Fuck no Sexbearhouse I left my stuff in the trolley!

So letting perishables to go bad in this sweltering weather? How incredibly selfish.

YABU for acting like a petulant toddler with the resilience of a gnat.

In my usual shop, (the one I ended up in) people seem to manage the 2m thing quite well.

I don't think my bag of lemons and birthday card were in danger of perishing particularly quickly, especially since I left them. In the chilled aisle.

I'm assuming you are not part of the at risk category or you would have got someone else to do the shopping?

I think you are being a little dramatic, just either ignore the supermarket worker or tell them to move the trollies further apart.

Sounds like you wanted to flounce out and cause a big scene.

Can someone please explain why we have social distancing in shops if we have to be in contact for. 15 mins.

For goodness sake everyone put your claws away. The woman was afraid for her safety and with over 36000 people dead who can blame her. Some people look for the finest details to have a go at someone.

If there were chilled or frozen goods in your trolley, I think it’s appalling that you’d waste food like that. Hard to say if you were being unreasonable or not without knowing how much and exactly what you were potentially wasting. If you weren’t comfortable in the supermarket then you should have (and you may have?) assessed then situation before you had done a significant amount of shopping.

OP read this www.sciencealert.com/does-the-amount-of-covid-19-virus-you-are-exposed-to-determine-how-sick-you-ll-get

The more exposure you have, the more likely you are to a) get it b) have it badly c) pass it on.

So a brief pass by someone in a supermarket is much better than a 15 minute snog with a very sick person. The chances of getting it from a breath when passing is small. Cramped in a bus, higher.

The thing that really pissed me off the last time that I went shopping was the woman who coughed, covered her mouth with her hands and then started picking things up off the shelf, looking at them and then putting them back.

A few months ago I wouldn't have noticed or maybe thought that she was polite to cover her mouth.

But surely everyone knows now that you cough into a tissue and then bin the tissue, and if you don't have a tissue, you cough into your elbow. No wonder some people disinfect their shopping when they get home.

I try to maintain a distance. But given that I am working/travelling/shopping not just for family and having days that are at least 18 hours long, I don’t have time to wait while someone dithers for 10 minutes deciding whether to buy chicken breasts or legs. Or are picking up 20 items of butter/spread to decide which one they actually want. All this in a shop where 2m distancing is nigh on impossible anyway?

I would say excuse me but if they chose to keep dithering, I would grab what was on my list and move on.

I am sorry if that makes people uncomfortable but I don’t know what else I can do bar go without sleep.

Bit shit for the member of staff that’s got to put all your shopping back. That’s much worse than not adhering to the social distancing rules, plus all the items will have to go in the bin or someone will be purchasing what you’ve already had your paws all over!
