AIBU?

Was I AIBU to walk out of supermarket.

I went to a supermarket which isn't my usual one today. There was a queue outside, but it moved pretty fast and was ably managed by staff who were also helpfully cleaning trollies. All well and good. However, inside was a different matter, it felt really busy and barely any of the customers (the majority of which were waring face masks) were adhering to the social distancing rules. I had a woman reach round me to get something and people were passing really close.

I got to the end with of an aisle which was blocked by 3 members of staff 2 of the large trollies they use to stack shelves. I couldn't safely pass so I turned around and tried to go up the next aisle which was empty and was loudly told off my a member of staff for not following the arrows, I tried to explain that I couldn't get up the other aisle but he just walked off. At that point I picked my shopping bags out of my trolley and walked out. Was I unreasonable.

Just to say, I work in a school, my husband and my sister are keyworkers. I fully appreciate that supermarket workers are keyworkers, and I'm in no way blaming the staff for the behaviours of the customers.

I would have asked the staff to move.
Going to another supermarket and queuing up with others and mixing with others in that supermarket with potentially a similar situation happening again, surely you'd be more at risk doing what you did.

Yesterdayschild, if you had looked at the post times before ploughing in accusing me of not reading the full thread you would have seen OP only disclosed the part about the lemons/card at 20:25 and I posted at 20:28. Had you given this any consideration before getting on your high horse you may have been able to summise that I did read the full thread but that in the few minutes in which I was typing my post the OP contributed with more information, causing a cross-post.

I do not consider myself a saint who has not done anything wrong, but if I did do something wrong and went to the effort of writing a long post about the wrong thing I had done asking for opinions I would fully expect to be criticised for it. The OP has started a thread on AIBU and asked for opinions on her actions, she’s hardly sat minding her own business and suddenly having people come out uninvited to attack her actions unprovoked - she’s asked for an opinion so it’s reasonable for posters to give it, even if they are not perfect. If I saw somebody abandon a trolley in real life I would leave them to it and wouldn’t said anything as it’s not my business, but by the OP carefully writing out her actions and asking people’s opinions she is openly ask other people to tell her what they think, knowing someone won’t agree, so it’s reasonable for anybody who disagrees to be open about their opinion. If the OP is going to get offended over that she shouldn’t have asked in the first place!

Absolution is not my goal. This is clearly the modern day self-flagellatiom.

Not at all unreasonable. And yes, you can catch it without being less than 2m away from someone for 15 minutes:

Hahaha. Yesterdayschild I think what you mean by that is ‘Yes BillyIsMyBunny, you are right and I have no comeback so I’ll pretend you’re boring me and throw out the old mumsnet biscuit even though it isn’t really relevant here as it was actually me who started nitpicking over an obvious cross-post without much reason and you were just responding to this.’

You probably would have looked better if you’d just ignored my response altogether rather than trying to be clever about it and looking a fool Grin

My dh did the same in Tesco the other day, it was staff there too.
He said it was funny being told off by two staff members almost touching each other.
My dil said they are complacent as they have been working all the times, and don't see the dangers. She's on mat leave from another supermarket, but not going back.

This level of terror and stropping and anxiety is fucking ridiculous

OP, you seriously need to get a grip.

Report
Witchcraftandhokum · 29/05/2020 21:21

I neither experienced terror or stopped. I merely felt uncomfortable and made a decision based on advice from the government, to leave the shop.

Not unreasonable.

Try M&S. They have a one-way system which is slightly better.

I also appreciate the staff are working hard, but a lot of them do not social distance.

Two of my DC are currently home shopping pickers. They start at 3am so that they are just finishing off as the customers start to come in. Both my DCs say that social distancing just isnt possible to get the orders picked in the time. Both said they struggle when the customers come in as by that point they have been working for several hours in a non SD way then suddenly they have to change.

Not saying it is ideal but just trying to give the view from the other side. They are doing their best.
