When the looting starts, the shooting starts.

Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

Sad SimonJT.

Thank your friend for setting out the facts and statistics so clearly.

FortunesFave · 02/06/2020 01:20

DGRossetti we don't say "blacks". I'm surprised at your using that term given you seem to be switched on.

Chillipeanuts · 02/06/2020 09:02

Weirdly, having just finished Ken Burns excellent documentary about Vietnam, this all seems terribly familiar ...

Sorry, nothing to do with thread but Rossetti, It really is excellent isn’t it? Very pleased that our College is using it as course material.)

Jangirl2018 · 02/06/2020 09:26

@DGRossetti

Blacks?? Do you mean black people??

DGRossetti · 02/06/2020 10:34

I was quoting from the documentary as I remember it - there was a marine from Chicago whose tale was shocking, depressing and familiar by turns.

But if we are talking offence, then being called switched on is pretty offensive to me. I'd take average human (as we all are) over "switched on" in any regime.

That said, I've been called worse.

SimonJT · 02/06/2020 11:27

@DGRossetti

Of course a lot of blacks joined (as was stated in the documentary) because if they died in service, their relatives got $10,000.
We’re not blacks.

Trump has now had pastors tear gassed for standing in the grounds of their own church so he can pose with a bible. A bible he probably can’t read because of all those big words.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 02/06/2020 11:39

The tear gas incident is honestly shocking to me. It is appalling. I understand these protesters were peaceful. And this is the so called 'Land of the Free'.

And I find his use of the Bible in this context highly offensive.

A bible he was holding upside down, according to news reports I've seen.

But there are no depths he will not plumb. Angry

Incidentally, what do people reckon are good causes to donate to?
So far my list is:

  1. Floyd family (things like paying for independent medical examiners doesn't come cheap)
  2. Hadley Freeman retweeted a link to an organisation that pays bail money for people arrested during the protests
  3. The medical funds of the photojournalist who lost her eye (I saw an interview with her where she said her insurance wasn't going to cover anything even close to her medical expenses, she'll be out of work due to convalescence for months, and it's by no means certain she'll be able to continue with her main career).

Keeping a weather eye out for my little DB who lives stateside (so Twitter for his state), I notice the "3 per centers" hand gesture is appearing in a lot of pictures. (Much as the gangs of LA had theirs).

Once you know about it, it's hard not to spot Sad

returning to "Mississippi Burning" which mentions a KKK hand gesture that appears in photographs of the day (thumb hooked into belt with 3 fingers showing).

Thanks! (Yes, use github for coding).

I found the Bail Project one from Hadley's twitter feed via their website bailproject.org.

This twitter thread has links to eye witness reports from the clergy who were there, also a picture of Hitler doing similar with a bible

Interestingly that foray onto Twitter told me that Amber Rudd (who oversaw part of the Windrush box set) and her daughter have been signed up to spout shite on Times Radio.

Because of my work schedule, and the curfew in LA tonight, I decided to get the groceries we needed during lunch today. I will have nightmares tonight from what I witnessed. 1/

@TeagWall

To start, let me say that I live in a predominately Latinx and Black neighborhood. Less than 10% of my neighborhood is white. As far as I can tell, my area has also been almost completely untouched by the looters/rioters. 2/

The Ralph's & CVS had boards over their windows today, but nothing was broken, & the other stores did NOT have boards up. The unopened 5 Guys, with a 100% glass store front, was pristine. The stores were crowded w/ people running errands before curfew. Everyone had a mask. 3/

Shopping took almost 2 hours. As I mentioned, stores were crowded. When I finally exited the store, it was like stepping into a completely different world. There were cops EVERYWHERE. Dozens of them, in packs. None of them were wearing masks. 4/

Teagan Wall, PhD

Why were they there? Good question? There were no protestors, or looters, or crimes being committed. The cops only seemed to be there to intimidate the folx shopping. People kept their eyes down, tried not to draw attention to themselves, HURRIED to their cars. 5/

It seemed like more cops kept appearing. Then, as I was leaving, I figured out why. The National Guard was using the major road South of the shopping center as a staging area. They had the roads blocked off with garbage trucks. 6/

There were HUNDREDS of soldiers, Humvees, and popo, staged in rows, up and down this major road. I had to go around to get home. I took this when I saw the first batch and it still seemed novel. 7/

None of them were wearing masks, they were all armed, and they were OCCUPYING my neighborhood where no protesting or looting as yet occurred. Can you imaging seeing an army, people you don't know, with weapons, take over your route home from the store? 8/

I'm white. I have SO much white privilege. When I saw the cops they SMILED at me. I was not the intended target of this show of force. These people were here for one reason: to terrify my black neighbors who have done NOTHING WRONG. 9/

Until I went to the store, I wad under the impression I lived in a wonderful, safe, diverse American neighborhood. Now I feel like I'm living in a war zone. The looters, rioters, and protestors didn't do that. The cops, mayor, and national guard did that. 10/

B0bbin · 02/06/2020 18:56

Just when you're wondering, 'can this man disgust me any more?' he just keeps doing it. This is particularly vile, given the connotations.

On the Trump front, does anyone else find this video scary? If we saw a friend in this position we would be worried for their safety.

It is quite chilling.

Melania looks totally terrified or completely out of it (or both).

If you look at the video there is one point where he holds her hand and it almost looks like he twists it backwards.
