When the looting starts, the shooting starts.

Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

You take your victim as you find them and considering it took nine minutes of good neck squashing to murder Mr Floyd, I dont think a reasonable person could conclude it was ill health or being a junkie Hmm that killed him.

It was murder that killed him.

Marpan · 31/05/2020 21:32

Do you think he’s wrong at calling, looters and violence creators thugs though?

It’s not a pleasant act to set fire to cars or loot shops or throw rocks and devices at people protecting their shops. It’s a far cry from the pleasant “protests” in London that were happening every Saturday before lockdown

x2boys · 31/05/2020 23:00

The question should be why is the president of the USA focusing on the violence and looting why is he not focusing on the murders of African Americans ,he is now inciting violence by his tweets as the president of the USA he should be aware people listen to him rightly or wrongly,it's ridiculous as the president he's allowed to tweet this crap

dreamingbohemian · 31/05/2020 23:40

Ok lots of white people are totally ignorant about phrases and terms being racist. The key thing is how you respond when people inform you that they are racist.

Good: Oh god, I had no idea. Thanks for telling me, I understand now.

Bad: But it's not racist! I didn't know it was racist, therefore it can't be racist!

Do you see the difference?

ShinyFootball · 01/06/2020 01:02

The officer continued for 3 minutes after the other officers failed to find a pulse.

Of course there are riots. This has happened too much. And as with Rodney king. Police only got looked at as there was footage. How many have got away with it because no footage.

Also look at the incarceration stats in the USA, the amount of money the labour brings to the economy. The discrepancy between judgements for white and black men for eg having weed on them.

FortunesFave · 01/06/2020 05:49

I assume everyone's aware of how the USA looks right now. Shit's on fire everywhere.

Press getting arrested. Innocent bystanders hit with rubber bullets...smiling cops shooting 'beanbag' rounds at the crowds. The Church of the Presidents opposite The White House was briefly on fire and Trump was in his underground bunker.

This won't calm down.

FortunesFave · 01/06/2020 05:50

They pulled down a statue in Alabama...a Confederate soldier or something. If you ask me, when the public are burning churches, pulling down statues and the press are getting arrested, that's civil war.

Glowcat · 01/06/2020 09:55

Confederate statues are very suitable targets.

dreamingbohemian · 01/06/2020 10:05

Yes they are.

We need to make this some sort of sticky at the top of threads like this.
FortunesFave · 01/06/2020 10:11

I agree. The Confederate statue had no place there anyway.

Hmm

If the protestors were more organised, and acting like soldiers maybe.

If the targets of the protesters are the instruments of the state, then it's more akin to a revolution. Americans should be good at spotting them. They never shut up about 1776 and all that ....

B1rdbra1n · 01/06/2020 10:40

I agree, if that's what happened when cameras are rolling and people are watching then what happens when no one is watching😥

dreamingbohemian · 01/06/2020 10:42

I'd like to think it would help Cara some people seem determined not to get it!

It's not a civil war when only one side are shooting at the other.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2020 10:44

Innocent bystanders hit with rubber bullets ...

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought there were curfews in the flashpoint areas?
In which case, why are "innocent bystanders" around?

lonelyfemale · 01/06/2020 11:10

Well if Ireland has thee jail space for these people good for them. Ours are full and usually someone has to pay for it. Then they get re-housed at taxpayer expense and they've had a week or more exchanging tips on how to steal/shoot/get away with murder next time! Plus it's not just notes and coins that get forged. There are organised gangs who spend their lives forging cheques and conning old grandparents (maybe Irish grandparents as well they don't care who). And even if some one is white privileged...that doesn't make it OK to steal and con. People loose their jobs over accepting a forged note. .....especially they banks and not all people who work in banks are rich bankers some of them are ordinary people who will be under pressure to spot as many frauds as they can! And if one of them steals a cheque it's automatically prison for 5 years

That will be the journalists, amongst others. Journalists are legally exempted from the curfew. One has lost an eye to a rubber bullet.

I imagine it's like here. Work commitments and caring responsibilities don't disappear because of a curfew. If you work at the hospital as a porter or a nurse of a doctor until 10pm, midnight or whenever your shift is, they don't stop needing you at work. Same with the packing plant, the shelf-stocking jobs and all the key worker roles in cities.

Also been some cases of people being shot with rubber bullets for being in their own front gardens.

Sad

I said upthread baton rounds aren't cuddly.

For goodness sakes don't research what water cannon can do.

Theeighthelephant · 01/06/2020 11:29

Still trying to justify murder for spending a fake note?

PotholeParadise · 01/06/2020 11:36

What does Ireland have to do with it?

Most people in the UK have paid or tried to pay for something with counterfeit coinage without realising. The remainder? They realised. It was such a problem that the Royal Mint took the previous type of one pound coin out of circulation and replaced it with a new model.

I think there was even a thread on MN on what to do if you actually realised you had a duff one. People recommended using them for parking meters and so on.

Absolutely
Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2020 11:41

You're quite right, PotholeParadise; I confess I hadn't thought about the journalists, which was stupid of me

As with those on later shifts, though, I wouldn't quite have called them bystanders ... they're there to do a job, but I guess the description doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things

PotholeParadise · 01/06/2020 11:47

I think I was unclear. I meant that people in key worker roles, which tend to be needed by society 24/7 and so have people there for late shifts and nights, have to get to work and get back home.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2020 11:50

No, the fault was mine Pothole - it was the use of "bystanders" rather than "workeers" which threw me off, but I really should have thought of that

This is the guy who made sexually inappropriate comments about his daughter.
