Can you believe that Trump has just tweeted this comment? He is talking about the protests about George Floyd's death. He has also called the protestors "thugs".

Twitter has put a warning on his twitter post, saying that it "glorifies violence". It is also racist!

The "historical context" is a reference to the late 1960s, when the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts" was coined by Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, in reference to his aggressive policing policies in black neighbourhoods.

I don't think trump wants a race war at all.

He was genuinely disgusted by what he saw, and took some action.
He doesn't want riots and more trouble.

The issue is, black rights I imagine has never really been an interest of his, he was apparently ignorant of his looting /shooting comment.... I imagine it's something that's never really touched his world.
In the same way that disability rights has never been an issue for him... Or sexism.

People in politics properly of course will usually be well aware of all the issues and complexities etc... But trump isn't a politician, he's a businessman whose found himself president!

One hopes... There are people in the background very quickly educating him on this! Because the whole country could go up like litmus if not.

Yes, I agree that Trump is more likely ignorant to the origins of the comment than intending to massacre protestors.

My suspicion is that he threatened to bring in the national guard (to "help" the governor) if the situation wasn't brought under control, not to control protestors but in order to force action on arresting the murderer - and hopefully defuse the situation. Shortly after Trump's threat, the officer/murderer was, indeed, arrested and charged.

But who knows with Trump. He's quite mad.

Trump is revolting! I don't defend looters, but they don't deserve the death penalty (I'm against the DP anyway, but even by American laws they don't), and especially not without even a trial!!! He is obviously playing to the racists and gun-nuts who form a part of his base; and he is getting more and more dangerous to democracy, the rule of law, human rights and just plain old sanity.

Smile, I don't know think he's that intelligent to be honest. And he isn't well educated.

He doesn't look into things that don't interest him or involve him.

America is going up. Every time someone sees that footage... It will spark them off. It sparks me off and I'm in the UK.

But a small part of me is hopeful, that maybe, just maybe more action maybe taken this time?

I watched some of the protests this morning. The Police do not seem to be riot trained. I guess as they rely on using guns.

Many years ago, the Met had a facility on Hounslow Heath where they trained UK police in riot control (amongst other specialist skills). In those days the UK was quite respected and it attracted interest from several police forces around the world. Including the US. Until they realised that the training was to control riots without guns. At which point they lost interest. I think it was a Chicago police chief who commented that you stop riots with live rounds.

(I still have a baton round from my time there - and don't ever think that "rubber bullets" are in someway bouncy. I've used it as a makeshift hammer a few times.)

The man brought and sold buildings and made deals. Whether they failed, weren't fraudulent, were legal.

He is consistently, horribly racist and sexist. These are not gaffes or honest mistakes.

And if he really is too dumb or ignorant not to be racist, then he has no business being president.

I don't think Trump would mind a race war. I don't know why people say there would be no winners, if the government throws the full weight of the police and armed forces against the people, they will crush them. Trump can declare martial law and cancel the elections. Not saying this will happen, it's a pretty extreme scenario, but there's no reason to think Trump wants to actually avoid a race war.

If Trump is out of office, he's going to jail. He will do everything to stay in power.
