Just that really-what do people think?

OP posts:
chomalungma · 29/05/2020 16:09

Which he caused

I am not the biggest fan of Boris - but even I really don't think he caused the virus. He just isn't that clever or patient.

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 29/05/2020 16:21

Interesting Wink

Mumsnet: An echo chamber for the leftist chatterati?
Ratasha · 29/05/2020 16:27

I think it skews slightly more left wing than the general UK population.

ghostyslovesheets · 29/05/2020 16:30

@BeltaneBride

Yes-endless personal insults at Tories pointless thread about Boris's name only there to be poisonous -completely unchallenged by MN.The other day I posted a thread about my disgust at the hypocrisy of the RNLI. Before I could even return to it an hour later, it had been taken down with zero explanation so have no idea what happened on it, no communication from MN admin but presume that as usual lefties had whined that it was unfair on the charidee sector (who are all saints and not to be questioned and demanded it be taken down.
that would be because you accused the RNLI of profiting from people smuggling and banged on about foreigners - hth
RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 16:31

Aaahhhh so that was it ghosty

That makes much more sense

TheLashKingOfScotland · 29/05/2020 16:37

There are people from every part of the political spectrum on here. It's why I like it. It's interesting to see how different people think and prioritise.

Alsohuman · 29/05/2020 16:55

I relish a political discussion but there’s rarely a decent one to be found here.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/05/2020 17:12

MN posters are mostly young and almost all female

So with those demographics, it would be odd if it didn't lean left

The Tory core vote is age 65+
If the voting age were raised to 65, Tories would always win GEs with about 80% of the vote !

BigChocFrenzy · 29/05/2020 17:16

Being a left-leaning site is different to being an echo chamber

There are many interesting debates with different views

If MN is that terrible, why would Tories stay here instead of posting on another site that suits them better ? Hmm

HorsesInTheSky · 29/05/2020 17:22

What is chatterati?

thegcatsmother · 29/05/2020 17:34

Perhaps because in spite of the politics, they value the comments on here; or when it's not being political, MN is a valuable resource. I don't know which flavour of politics the poster is who explained years back how to use soda crystals and vinegar to clean a whiffy smell from a washing machine, and I don't care. It was useful information, and it helped.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/05/2020 17:35

Excellent description.

Firecarrier · 29/05/2020 17:38

YADNBU.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 29/05/2020 17:41

I got banned for discussing the possibility of our esteemed PM perhaps not pulling through the virus. Which he caused.

He caused the virus?

cloudspotter · 29/05/2020 17:45

I've seen a broad spectrum of political inclinations. It's not an echo chamber as you will always find a lively debate from different PoV.

But I think also there is a bit of a "Mumsnet-think" effect, which influences the "Overton window" of which views are acceptable and unacceptable. This might be biased in favour of those who have the time or inclination to post.

Mind you, it's nothing like as polarised as other forums like Facebook, which is littered with groups from either far left or far right.

Ginandbearit1 · 29/05/2020 17:46

Yanbu, I would prefer to hear more right wing views as well, it's a bit boring that it's so left dominated.

Tomorrowsanewday · 29/05/2020 17:52
Kurzgesagt · 29/05/2020 18:08

What right wing views do you want to hear @Ginandbearit1 ?

OvaHere · 29/05/2020 18:22

That there are people on this thread saying it's left wing and others saying it's right wing suggests that for the most part it falls in between and is reflective of a broad spectrum of views.

Which is kind of what you want really from a site with this many users and a broad base of topics.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 29/05/2020 19:04

Different parts of MN reflect different demographics. Pre covid I only ever really posted in education which attracts educated middle class posters. I would sometimes browse AIBU just to read threads but TBH a lot of it is poverty porn, AIBU is an online Jerry Springer show. I appreciate that many of the stories are fabricated but even then I wonder at the minds and lives of the people who invent the stories.

And I do find many AIBU posters are very left leaning and will pile in to applaud "kill the pig/Tory" type comments. I have given up with the covid threads because they are going much the same way as AIBU.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 19:07

I would love to know what right wing views people would like to express that aren't already expressed on here.

VirginWestCoast · 29/05/2020 19:21

Not really.
Quite socially liberal generally but I wouldn't say it was a left wing echo chamber.
The phrase echo chamber is always used to dismiss people who don't agree with you. So you're on a thread and you're a minority view? So what, maybe you're in a minority on the thread, the site, the country, who knows? If people want to post their opinion they can do, no one's going to look at a thread and think "Well I agree with X but so do most other people... Maybe I should stay out of it or change my opinion so that other people have a more nuanced discussion to read through."

BanKittenHeels · 29/05/2020 19:37

Christ women having an opinion, quick put a fucking derogatory label on it.

MadameMarie · 29/05/2020 21:46

I don't think the forum is representative. Country overwhelmingly voted Conservative but far from the case on here.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 23:05

Lreally?

I honestly dont think ive seen this...at all
