Just that really-what do people think?

OP posts:
chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:41

That's true Chom, those stats merely record attainment, not intelligence

I love looking at stats - and then saying why you can't interpret anything from them!!

Helmetbymidnight · 29/05/2020 09:43

Seeing the blatantly obvious doesn’t make people left-wing.

absolutely, and its troubling that more and more people seem to be falling into this ridiculous reductionist view.

i was discussing this yesterday- 'cummings was right, the only people who are angry are lefty tree huggers trying to stop brexit' i told him that three of our local hard-line cons brexiteer mps said cummings should resign but he wouldnt accept it.

how did people get so rigid in their thinking?

DemolitionBarbie · 29/05/2020 09:43

It's a site based on solidarity. Sharing experiences and helping other people, especially in vulnerable situations. Of course it's fairly left wing.

There should be a right wing equivalent where people share their experiences and just get told they've brought it on themselves and should work harder. Or is that the Daily Mail comments section?

Myfavouritecolouris · 29/05/2020 09:44

For every 10 years in age you’re more likely to vote Conservative. It’s said, with age comes wisdom.

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 09:44

how did people get so rigid in their thinking?

We caught it off the Americans - Thatcher started it.

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 09:46

Hmmm I am 58 now and whilst I have never been tempted to vote Tory at all, if anything I am getting less inclined as time passes.

Shinjirarenai · 29/05/2020 09:46

Not sure about left-wing, but it's definitely used to push some agendas. As with the MSM, some ideas are just not touched or fail to gain traction.

Doyoumind · 29/05/2020 09:46

We're also accused of being right wing bigots. Neither are true imho.

derxa · 29/05/2020 09:47

A lot of Mnetters aspire to be Emily Maitliss

Helmetbymidnight · 29/05/2020 09:48

i guess social media amplifies it and maybe modern life can be overwhelming with its freedom/choices so if you have a template/road map/script to stick to then its easier, i dunno what it is.

i do feel weird about people who are simply unable to criticise boris though- its like theyre under a spell.

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 09:49

I've been accused of being both left and right on here.

Me too - especially as I am a leftie leave supporter (yes we exist - se also Dennis Skinner, John Mann etc)

I must be a right wing red-faced gammon boomer bigot though because leaver.

OtterBe4 · 29/05/2020 09:50

Left wing? when half or
more posters think there is no life outside of London?🤣
I’m regularly disgusted by the nasty elitist comments on MN, the benefit haters, scornful at non graduates, dismissal of anywhere other than England, expecting Scotland, Ireland and Wales to be subservient.
A lot of women here are their own worse enemies when it comes to politics.

TooLittleTooLate80 · 29/05/2020 09:53

I've always thought it slightly right of centre but if you're basing this on the numerous threads criticising the govt then you can't really do that given the number of previously prominent "right wingers" on Twitter also criticising them. Being upset with the govt handling of things at the moment does not automatically make you a lefty.

thegcatsmother · 29/05/2020 09:54

Leftist, definitely...MN gets savage around election time, 2010 and 15 were noticeable for the unpleasantness on some threads, and 2016 wasn't much better!

Chatterati, no. What I value about MN is that it's people from all walks of life, different circumstances, attainment, life choices etc. It makes me think outside my own circumstances.

rosie1959 · 29/05/2020 09:55

Have noticed the popular trend on here is usually not what actually happens in real life
If you read mumsnet Brexit would never have happened
Labour would have won the last election
And nobody has toilet brushes

IntermittentParps · 29/05/2020 09:56

The whole political spectrum is on here, IME. Those saying it's a left-wing echo chamber go on threads with a left-wing bias and then complain about them; but there are also right-wing/other biased threads.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:56

That is true.

It's good to hear different voices. Some people 'hear' but don't listen. Just react

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 09:57

because many people didn't just have the chance to go Uni a long time ago

Yes

And also going to uni wasn’t seen as such a vital thing when i was 18, 32 years ago

Yes there are certainly a lot of people on here who claim to be left wing but seem to have contempt for others in a less privileged position. To take a trivial example. The threads about workmen using their loos and causing a stink. Some mnetters' shit literally doesn't stink. Grin

MrBennsshop · 29/05/2020 10:05

@TeenPlusTwenties

I think it depends what topics.

Tory views get dismissed as being unfeeling/uncaring. (e.g. if you voted Tory you want
You should apparently never expect a birthday present or an inheritance.
Children should be doing their own washing from 11.
All children should be kicked out and financially independent from 18.

ps. Is standing up vociferously for single sex spaces leftish or rightish?

To answer your ps, definitely rightish. The left appear not to gives a shit about women's spaces whereas Tory MPs and Baroness Nicholson are at least speaking up for us on that.
ThePlantsitter · 29/05/2020 10:06

No. I think Mumsnet is more about gecko frocks for the deftest splatter art tea if I'm honest.

ThePlantsitter · 29/05/2020 10:11

Or actually it's for lazy journalists who can't be bothered to make up their own pithy epithets.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 29/05/2020 10:12

Nah.
