Mumsnet: An echo chamber for the leftist chatterati?

Just that really-what do people think?

OP posts:
Glowcat · 29/05/2020 09:21

What I said was ‘The more educated a person is the more likely they are to vote Lib Dem or Labour’. Would you prefer the more educated a person is the less likely they are to vote Conservative? That’s a better way of putting it.

ive been incoherently accused of being a leftie and a corbynista loads of times on here (im not at all, and disliked the fella immensely) - however each time it happens it tells me the person im discussing with is a blinkered thicko (although generally id have already worked that out.)

The way to test your theory, OP, was to start this thread and see if everyone said no. Because people creating an echo chamber would have said no. But lots of people agreed with you. So that's a poor echo chamber. I think you've answered your own question.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:23

It's very predictable that certain posters will always turn up and defend the current Government come what may.

Remember when Donald Trump said he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and get away with it.

I bet certain posters on here would be amongst the first to defend something like that.

And then mention opinion polls.

Notejode · 29/05/2020 09:25

What about the link to the guardian and independent articles? Very prominent in MN

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 29/05/2020 09:26

@Crispyturtle

No I think it’s pretty centrist, as I believe most of the country actually is. It’s just the political discourse over the past few years has sought to separate us into left & right.

Clavinova · 29/05/2020 09:26

The more educated a person is the more likely they are to vote Lib Dem or Labour.

Although you have overlooked the line in your link that says;

"While the Conservatives lead amongst all educational groupings"...

Helendee · 29/05/2020 09:26

Yes, definitely.

Barbadossunset · 29/05/2020 09:27

I don't think it was that, I believe so many people were complacent about the result that they didn't bother to vote

Linda do you mean they thought Labour would get in so there was no need to bother voting - or they were so sure Tories would win there was no point voting as it would be a wasted vote?

There’s one long running thread on mumsnet where any Tory voters are rounded in by the regulars and seen off pretty quickly. Anyone who persists is a Russian or Tory bot.

MrSheenandMe · 29/05/2020 09:27

No - it is a good mix.

Most people are left-ish on some issues and right-ish on others. They may appear Left when they are making a "I hate BoJo" point but in the next thread they are asserting exclusive property rights over a parking space. They may be anti - Labour on economic policy and argue loudly that a Labour Govt will be the death of the economy as we know it but equally loud on another thread calling out a racist, very right wing poster on another. That is the point. It is a mix.

Glowcat · 29/05/2020 09:28

A lot of first past the post thinking on here.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:28

Given the demographics of MN, then you are more likely to find posters who would tend to be 'less Conservative' in their views.

It's like being surprised that the Daily Express readership tend to have more Conservative views.

It's just the demographics.

You could go into certain parts of cities and find that many people share certain political views. That's the demographics.

There is a reason that certain adverts are seen on MN and some aren't.

Helmetbymidnight · 29/05/2020 09:30

i think there is a lot of tribal and blind partisan thinking in all of society at the moment.
i think its really problematic.
people seem prepared to defend this govt to the hilt. ive never felt that way about any govt or party so i genuinely dont get it.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:30

There’s one long running thread on mumsnet where any Tory voters are rounded in by the regulars and seen off pretty quickly

And yet some still keep posting in spite of lots of posters dismantling their arguments....

Dedication, that's what it is!!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2020 09:33

Or you could say Glow, more educated people vote Conservative than Labour. Or Labour's vote-share remains static across all levels of educational achievement. There's no proof of tendency to the left there, just a trend away from the right towards centrism. I'd actually question YouGovs phrasing above the chart as somewhat partisan as there's no trend towards labour at all. Education does not make you vote Labour.

Davespecifico · 29/05/2020 09:34

As time has gone on, it seems to be a lot more mixed.
The Pro Brexit threads seem to do a roaring trade. And I was surprised at the number of people on the ‘anti dementors’ lets all go to the beach and break lockdown thread. Also here is a lot of anti trans stuff, although I think this crosses party lines.

mondaynoon · 29/05/2020 09:35

I think it can seem that way because people are more likely to be posting things that are critical of the government and the current government is right wing. If Labour was in power, the criticism would be coming from the right/ centre and posts would reflect that.

chomalungma · 29/05/2020 09:35

Education does not make you vote Labour

Just to throw another spanner in the works.

Many older people didn't go to University - because many people didn't just have the chance to go Uni a long time ago.

So that makes those statistics even harder to interpret.

solieltoday · 29/05/2020 09:35

Op, I presume you’ve posted this great insight because you see the MN reaction to the Cummings saga as evidence of “left-wing chatterati.”

Well, to put it simply, you’re wrong.,

It’s perfectly possible to br right of centre, but be appalled by the current cabinet.

It’s the reason why, for instance, London boroughs who previously voted for Cameron and Osbourne and are full of wealthy bankers / entrepreneurs etc, turned LD or Labour at the last election Richmond and Wandsworth as examples - conservative voters who just couldn’t get behind Boris because they see right through his smoke and mirrors and no, they didn’t want to “Get Brexit Done”

They just cant align themselves to the current populist shitshow. This govt is a pack of disingenuous snakes.

Seeing the blatantly obvious doesn’t make people left-wing.

PowerslidePanda · 29/05/2020 09:35

Who was astonished, Panda?

The OPs of some of the threads that were started the morning after the election

CourtneyLurve · 29/05/2020 09:38

WHAT AN ORIGINAL AND THOUGHT PROVOKING POST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR IMMENSE INSIGHT INTO THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2020 09:40

That's true Chom, those stats merely record attainment, not intelligence.

thatonehasalittlecar · 29/05/2020 09:41

There are some interesting studies linking low emotional intelligence / intelligence with holding right wing views.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 29/05/2020 09:41

I've been accused of being both left and right on here.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 29/05/2020 09:41
@ItsGoingTibiaK it was not a sweeping statement, it was a question. Note the question mark?
I’m also tired of people putting question marks on the end of their sweeping statements to try to make it look like they’re neutral and just looking for an in interesting conversation.
