"Downing St. considers the Dominic Cummings matter closed". AIBU that that statement, more than the actions of Cummings himself, makes my blood boil?

I'm assuming the "so you can all fuck off" at the end of the statement is implied.

My MP is Matt Hancock. I got an automatic email bleating about how his inbox was full. I wonder why?

PotholeParadise · 29/05/2020 11:41

Hancock doesn't seem to have a separate email address for being Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

How do I contact him to ask him about abusing his position?

whataloadoftoshasusual · 29/05/2020 11:55

It is the sheer arrogance that they don’t have to follow the rules because they are somehow more exceptional than us and then to concoct such a pathetic eye test excuse that even a 4 year old would blush at inventing shows just how much contempt they have for us.
And then the icing on the cake - telling us all that we need to move on. We decide when we will move on! Sick of them trying to shut down debate, silencing the journalists - who does he think he is ? Last I checked I lived in a democracy

InterestingIris · 29/05/2020 12:04

I don’t actually have much of a problem with what DC did. Yes, yes, he technically broke the rules and he shouldn’t have - but he is only human. Walk a mile in someone’s shoes, be kind and all the rest.

When it first happened I felt quite sorry for him as I was fully expecting forced resignation/being fired and I don’t think what he did was actually all that bad.

It’s what’s happened since that’s the massive problem imo. I mean it’s utterly ridiculous - it’s unarguable that he DID in fact break several rules. Yet they’re arguing that he didn’t - and going as far as actually endorsing what he did as a positive thing and it being the right thing to do.

They could have sidestepped it fairly neatly I think. Grovelling apology statement from DC about how unwise he was and hindsight has made him realise, difficult time for all, bla bla. A statement from Boris saying it’s been taken seriously and DC spoken with - but he’s not being sacked because xyz reasons, important to the cause at the minute bla bla, so sorry.

It would have died down.

Instead DC has dug his hole so deep he can no longer climb out and the blatant lack of integrity from Boris and DC has people like Piers Morgan screaming for blood.

It won’t die down now.

Echobelly · 29/05/2020 12:07

It typifies the contempt with which they are treating the public, so no YANBU. It annoyed me that people had to go on about it, not that they did go on about it. I don't think governments should always bow to 'the people' on some things, but this is a time they really should have... it does make one wonder if, as some have suggested, DC has blackmail material on people high up to be so protected!

Though more likely I think Boris and co just believe they can't function without him, though honestly it's not as though they're functioning with him.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/05/2020 12:19

InterestingIris
It does seem to have died down, certainly in the press. And look at the lack of activity on these threads now.
Interesting article in The Guardian today though. So even though Johnson and Cummings think that they have drawn a line under it for now, these scandals leave a stain.
And journalists will be on the prowl.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 12:50

Dippy I have had no reply to mine. I've sent a few emails. 1 regarding Cummings. 1 with a question about what I can do within guidelines due to my personal circumstances, and 1 about her position after prematurely defending Cummings on Twitter due to her role.
She's ignored them all.

Although I'm still waiting for the support I begged her for 4 years ago for my DS. I got her PA trying to say attend a clinic. I explained why I couldn't personal circumstances and asked for phone call or home visit. I'm still waiting! (All resolves though because I contacted a counsellor in a local area who I knew had a passion for the same area I needed help. He arranged an independent panel and I 'won')

If there is one positive from all this it's that people have woken to to their rights.
The stronger the British people are as a collective the stronger our government will have to be.

BlackberryCane · 29/05/2020 12:51

If, as is likely, Suella Braverman refuses to provide information about the advice she as Attorney General gave to the Cabinet in relation to Cummings' guilt, there'll be a crowdfunder to take legal action against her for it soon. Keep an eye out.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 12:52

The word the DC article about leaving in 6 months was on front page of the DM. Breakfast television showed it.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 12:53

They can consider it closed all they want. Note their call. The next episode is going to be the attempts to take action against Suella Braverman, who shat all over the rule of law in parenting the party line on Cummings.

she is not responding to constituents. See my above post!

BlackberryCane · 29/05/2020 12:54

I know, I wouldn't expect her to. She'll be responding if there's legal action taken against her though.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 12:58

Blackberry so share. She's my Mp! She's been vaporised currently. I've never know her so quiet Grin

BlackberryCane · 29/05/2020 13:08

It's the Good Law Project. I believe they've sent the letter and are waiting for the reply. We all know what that will be!

How odd, wonder why it was taken down so quickly. Relieved to know I'm not dreaming about Durham Dom
TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/05/2020 13:28

Just to say as well there is an article in The Times today but I can't read it in full as no share token Sad

BiggerBoat1 · 29/05/2020 13:39

As my local MP hasn't bothered to reply, I have written to the Prime Minister today. Don't suppose he'll reply either.

This is my email in case anyone is interested.

Dear Mr Johnson

I am writing to you because I thought it might be timely to remind you that you are a public servant. You are elected by – and answerable to – the public.

You are clearly aware that there is huge public anger surrounding the actions of Dominic Cummings when he suspected that he and his wife had contracted Covid19. You seem to be content to dismiss this anger by repeating the mantra that much of what was said about Mr Cummings was untrue. This may well be the case, but is entirely irrelevant.

I am a member of the public. I am angry about the things that Mr Cummings admitted to in his own statement. My issues are as follows:

  1. It is wholly unacceptable for Mr Cummings to say that he had no child care options in London. This is a senior strategist. He should have had a plan in place before he became ill. He should have been mindful of the fact that the rules of the lockdown would have prevented him from travelling hundreds of miles to use his own family for childcare. I know many people with young children who have asked friends or family locally to step in and help if they become too unwell to care for their children. If Mr Cummings genuinely had no local friends or family then he should have asked the community for support as is the case with everybody else.

By travelling so far Mr Cummings clearly broke the rules of lockdown. He must have had to buy petrol at least once and risked transferring the virus to a different part of the country during his stay.

  1. The trip was Barnard Castle (a popular tourist destination which Mr and Mrs Cummings chose to visit on her birthday) was clearly unnecessary. If I pretend for the purposes of this communication that I believe his excuse of driving to this town to “test his eyesight”, then I have two questions. Firstly, why would a responsible father strap his four year old child into a car and drive if he thought his eyesight might be compromised? Surely this is reckless in the extreme. Secondly, if Mr Cummings’ eyesight was in doubt why did his wife not drive? If both adults were too unwell to drive, then they should have delayed their return to London.

As far as I understand it, Mr Cummings has wilfully ignored the lockdown and done exactly what he wanted to do. He chose to use his own family for childcare rather than local options. He risked public health by transferring the virus to another location 260 miles away. We’d all love to see our family, even if just to wave at them from one farm building to another. Most people understand however that we have a collective responsibility not to do that – especially if we suspect we may have the virus.

He then chose to take his wife out for the day on her birthday. The story he has made up to justify this day out is wholly inadequate and wholly unbelievable.

Mr Cummings should have resigned. As he has shown himself not to be a man of integrity and has not done so, you should have sacked him.

Neither of you has acted with any principal or honour. You have lied, made excuses and ignored the feelings of the public. You have now decided the matter is closed and act like a petulant child when questioned about it. The matter is not closed Prime Minister just because you want to it be. The matter will be closed when you acknowledge the wrong-doing and take action by removing Mr Cummings from his job.

I am very sad to say that in a time when the country needs a strong leader you have failed us all.

Judging by the btl comments on that Guardian piece - almost 2000 and closed for more in less than four hours - it’s not going away any time soon. Dubbing Cummings “Gollum” is inspired and incredibly effective, his current power and influence is definitely “My precioussss”.

Times article, hope it works.

greathat · 29/05/2020 13:50

I think he should be fired. He broke rules he himself helped write and in doing so undermined the government's position massively. Other government advisors were replaced for doing the same, there needs to be consistency

Alsohuman · 29/05/2020 13:52

I have no great qualms about Mr Johnson playing with matches and setting himself alight.

From The Times.

CendrillonSings · 29/05/2020 13:56

Before joining The Times in 2008, Philip Collins was the chief speech writer to the prime minister Tony Blair.

I’m sure his advice to the Tories is completely genuine and sincere Grin

Haplap · 29/05/2020 13:58

Precisely what you said OP. It's maddening.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2020 14:01

They're taking us for fools and if you don't see it then you are a bloody fool imo.

StealthPolarBear · 29/05/2020 14:03

Also a pp said "it's done now, no one died" people are dying every day from covid 19. Many can't be traced back to an individual that they caught it from, but we were told not to travel in order to avoid spreading the virus. So he and his family are guilty of increasing the risk of spreading the virus and killing people.

SecretSpAD · 29/05/2020 14:04

We can multi task, we can go for them about Cummings and care homes. It’s not difficult

Exactly this. People who keep saying "what about..." and "isn't this more important..." are deflecting as well as the govt.

We all have things we care about more than others. I'm more concerned with the way this govt has ridden roughshod over the media and the public in an attempt to gas light us all yet again. I personally view that, and the future of our country and democracy more important than eg when year 2 children go back to school.

Can't people see what this man is doing? He is choosing this unelected, inexperienced and, frankly, unwanted trouble maker over his own MPs and the general public in this country. Doesn't this tell you what this man is really like? How little either of them care for anything over than their own interests.
