"Downing St. considers the Dominic Cummings matter closed". AIBU that that statement, more than the actions of Cummings himself, makes my blood boil?

I'm assuming the "so you can all fuck off" at the end of the statement is implied.

OP posts:

Sadly, I've been listening to the radio since about 7.30am and I'm not aware of a single mention of this issue.
News is all about Johnson's lifting of restrictions yesterday so that we can meet other people in our gardens.
All talk of bubbles with one other family now seems to be forgotten.
If I were cynical I would say this is Johnson's 'look over there' treat so that the Cummings incident and subsequent behaviour by the cabinet is forgotten.
We are fucking idiots in this country and he knows it.

KenDodd · 29/05/2020 09:14

Well Cummings has made no secret of the fact he thinks the electorate are thick and has said as much publicly.

Yes - there does seem to have been a lot of announcements this week, don't there....

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2020 09:32

But it'll only work if we look over there and allow ourselves to be distracted by the carrot.

pinktaxi · 29/05/2020 09:35

Yes it's a democracy and I vote to move on.. he did the wrong thing but no one died. It wasn't some selfish jolly weekend like the Scottish woman, but a misjudged thoughtless action.

The left wing media are making hay with the story, which always makes me suspicious

pinktaxi · 29/05/2020 09:36

Far more important was the failing of care homes at the beginning of the crisis. Answers need to be given to families who's loved ones did die

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 09:37

The proof is in the PM and ruling party :)

Hingeandbracket · 29/05/2020 09:38

The "eyesight test" bit was, I suspect actually a jolly.

sleepingpup · 29/05/2020 09:39

s and boys. The actions of one man don't change that any more than the actions of my dog does.

The gov's own SAGE bods don't agree with you on that. @tawnygrisettes but don't worry. Take the dog for a walk.

solieltoday · 29/05/2020 09:50

“We are fucking idiots in this country and he knows it.”

Yes, sadly, this is what it comes down to.

That's very true, but it is difficult to keep up the momentum and the awareness of how serious this actually is if it drops from the msm. It is a long way until an election. I'm pinning my hopes on Piers on Monday and Starmer on Wednesday. As someone else said, if it was a partner that spoke to me the way Johnson did yesterday, basically telling me that his word is final and it is to be spoken of never again, I would be packing my bags (lockdown or not Grin). What I cannot compute at the moment is why he is not being challenged on the R number with is between 0.7 and 0.9 so very close to 1. Whitty and Vallance yesterday seemed to be urging more caution than the buffoon standing between them. I feel so despondent about this. There was a report in the Daily Mail last night that a source close to Cummings suggested that Cummings has always considered that he would be leaving in December once he has dealt with Brexit and reformed the Civil Service. But that article is nowhere to be seen this morning. I possibly dreamt it Grin
DippyAvocado · 29/05/2020 10:35

Those of you that have written to your MPs, have you had a reply? I wrote to my (Tory) MP on Sunday and think four working days is an adequate time to respond to a huge national scandal so I'm wondering if she is employing the "move on" strategy by ignoring emails. I was going to send her another but wondered if it's reasonable to give her a bit longer. If most other MPs have already responded I'll start bothering her straight away.

missyB1 · 29/05/2020 10:40

He becomes more and more Trumpesque every day. Shut the press and the plebs up and just keep believing your own bullshit.

Somerville · 29/05/2020 10:57

Did you include your full address DippyAvocado so she knows you’re a constituent?
If not I’d write again including the address. Actually, if yes I’d write again anyway to keep up the pressure TBH...

Yes, clearly it was a legitimate eye sight test, soon to be recommended by the DVLA.

People tend to forget the historical lessons about populist governments. They start off telling the electorate what they want to hear and are headed by people with charisma and mass appeal. Then they start testing democratic boundaries, proroguing parliaments, saying outright lies, perverting the democratic process, etc. until they feel sufficiently secure to turn totalitarian. The Cummings affair is not about whether one person broke the rules or not, it's about the kind of government the UK currently has.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 29/05/2020 11:00

I didn't dream it, I have just found it in my history - but when I click on it I am taken to a page that is completely different.
Strange.

BlackberryCane · 29/05/2020 11:04

They can consider it closed all they want. Note their call. The next episode is going to be the attempts to take action against Suella Braverman, who shat all over the rule of law in parenting the party line on Cummings.

PotholeParadise · 29/05/2020 11:12

If we can't get them to acknowledge the difference between A) the party line on Cummings, and including Hancock's personal statement on the matter; B) the guidance before Cummings, and C) Hancock's public announcement post-Cummings on it being civic duty to isolate immediately,

we are screwed on care homes.

This is a pivotal moment. If they get away with this, the only way is down.

Alsohuman · 29/05/2020 11:20

We can multi task, we can go for them about Cummings and care homes. It’s not difficult.

This ^^ Absolutely this I despair that a number of people on these threads who claim it is boring don't see this - assuming they are not all astroturfers.
DippyAvocado · 29/05/2020 11:22

I did Somerville. However, we have had email exchanges in the past and I suspect she knows I would never vote for her so probably she doesn't care what I think!

BlackberryCane · 29/05/2020 11:26

Yy thewordwomanistaken, and I'm pretty certain they're not all astroturfing and being tribalist. That would probably be easier to understand.

Somerville · 29/05/2020 11:26

Yeah my MP’s the same about not caring what I think since I’ve bent her ear before. We live very near each other and she pointedly looks the other way now, when we pass each other in the street.

However she hasn’t clicked that my DH belongs to me (so to speak) and says good morning to him - and answered his letter over this that we wrote together.

PotholeParadise · 29/05/2020 11:28

Agreed. But if we switch targets entirely, what will Johnson learn? That if he ignores us long enough, we'll give up and move on to something else.

And he'll be right. If we can let it go when official government statements contradict each other, we'll accept anything.

Janaih · 29/05/2020 11:31

I wrote to my pro Brexit tory MP and got the most pathetic fence sitting drivel I've ever heard in reply.
