To think I might be pregnant??

So I'm 40, had 2 healthy pregnancies (7 & 5)followed by 2 miscarriages, then 18 months of irregular periods. Had blood test last year and April this year, have been told I'm going through the menopause. The doctor advised that the particular menopause hormone (can't remember the name) they test for was very high and I wouldn't be able to get pregnant naturally. So upset about this, but have dealt with it and decided now time to concentrate on me and what I want instead of being in this 'want another baby limbo'...

So during the last couple of weeks my youngest keeps talking about 'mummy's baby' (we haven't discussed anything informs of them) and yesterday I thought my boobs looked massive, so I had some tests in the cupboard and thought 'what the hell'...

Clear blue digital came back 'pregnant'

Totally shocked decided to try again this morning, did a clear blue (not digital one) and it came back negative so did another digital one and it came back 'failed'....

WTF?!? Is a false positive/negative possible with a digital test???

I didnt think you could get false positives. Interestingly (maybe and old wives tale) I thought it was quite easy to get pregnant right before the menopause as you get a last surge of hormone. But that could be a rumour

Drainedbeyondbeleaf1 · 28/05/2020 09:24

You could be pregnant op but I’d also book an appointment with your gp. I think that you can get false positives in the case of cysts or other growths on ovaries. Definitely worth an appointment and wish you best of luck with everything.

Pigletspal · 28/05/2020 09:25

It doesn’t seem very likely to me Flowers

aiejavah · 28/05/2020 09:26

Was the test still in it's use by date? Just wondering if it had been in the cupboard a while.

Ullupullu · 28/05/2020 09:26

Stupid question but have you definitely had unprotected sex in the right time frame? You don't mention. I agree with the above that unfortunately it might be other hormones at play

soconfusing · 28/05/2020 09:36

Yes we have been having unprotected sex, in fact thanks to lockdown more than we used too!

The tests are in date.

I have one more test left, which I think I'll do this evening and make an appointment with the GP either way.

Ooooh interesting!! What DPO do you think you are?

soconfusing · 28/05/2020 09:44

Absolutely no idea, haven't had a period since February!

The more I think about it, it must be a false positive

Can you take a photo of the non digital you did? I’d be interested if it has a faint line.

Gin4thewin · 28/05/2020 09:50

Id try and hold on 2 more days and do it in the morning. It was killing me waiting with DC2, but i knew with the pregnancy hormone doubling every other day, the tests are more likely to be reliable and could see line progression better

soconfusing · 28/05/2020 09:52

I can't see a faint line...

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/05/2020 09:53

Oh gosh no I can’t either. How weird! Those digital aren’t particularly sensitive either.

soconfusing · 28/05/2020 09:55

Arrgghhhh! It so frustrating!

I'll try and hold off for a couple of days and re test (99% I won't be able to be will test again later Grin)

OP I'd have to go out and get some pink dye tests to find out I wouldn't be able to wait

The menopause can give spikes in HCG which then display as positive on a pregnancy test

Tipsylizard · 28/05/2020 10:10

I am peri menapousal and took pregnancy test due to symptoms which showed a.line on a first response which I think was due to raised HCG but it didn't ever trigger a pregnant line on a digital. Why don't you wait until first wee tomorrow and try another test then?

Lillygolightly · 28/05/2020 10:30

I would wait a couple of days and test again which I know is hard but should hopefully give you a more reliable result. Wishing you lots of luck!

krispycreme · 28/05/2020 10:41

I don't want to give you false hope but something similar happened to me when ttc DC2. Positive on clear blue at home, had quite a bit of pain so went to the Dr. They took a urine sample which came back negative. I then went home and photographed the positive test so they did a blood test instead which showed that I was actually pregnant. I'd test again possibly with pink dye instead.

RonObvious · 28/05/2020 10:44

Without sounding too pessimistic - it could be a chemical pregnancy. The first test could have just been in time to catch enough hormones - I had something similar, where I got a positive, followed by a much fainter positive, followed by a negative. Will be keeping my fingers crossed for you though!

pooopypants · 28/05/2020 10:49

If you're testing again, use a FRER (pink dye test). Use first wee of the day and a pot to collect it - dip the test into the urine as opposed to dipping it into your urine stream

Good luck!

LellyMcKelly · 28/05/2020 11:03

Test in the morning not the evening. Your first wee of the day will give you a more accurate reading

Stampy84 · 28/05/2020 11:07

Normally on the digital ones it states how many weeks you are? So pregnant 1-2 weeks up to 4+, am I being blind or does it not say that on the positive ‘pregnant lady result?

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/05/2020 11:20

Not all digital tests have the weeks indicator.
